Words can be powerful. Proverbs 18:8 describes how gossip or slander can feel like “delicious morsels”—easy to take in, yet harmful to the soul. We might find ourselves drawn to hearing juicy details or spreading rumors, but the reality is that words can damage relationships, just like the fabric of a garment can tear apart when it’s mishandled. Similarly, Proverbs 18:9 shows that laziness or not putting in our best effort can lead to destruction. When we slack off, whether in our responsibilities or our relationships, we damage the strength of our community and our bond with others.
In Exodus 26, God gives detailed instructions on how to build the tabernacle. This tabernacle is meant to be a holy and unified space, where God’s presence can dwell among His people. Each part of the tabernacle, from the fine linens to the cherubim woven into the curtains, is crafted with care, as it is a symbol of unity and beauty in God’s kingdom. Just like the intricate details of the tabernacle, our words and actions should be intentional and done with care to build up, rather than tear down, the unity of the body of Christ.
The connection here is clear: Just as the tabernacle needed to be carefully built to represent God’s glory and unity, our words and efforts must be intentional and aligned with God’s purpose for our lives. When we speak wisely and work diligently, we contribute to building a strong and unified community.

THINK ABOUT IT
1. Gossip’s Damage: Have you ever witnessed the harm that gossip or careless words can do? How can you choose to speak in a way that builds others up instead of tearing them down?
2. Slackness in Action: Do you ever find yourself slacking off in your responsibilities? What would it look like if you gave your best effort in everything you do, especially in your relationships and tasks?
3. Building Unity: Just as the tabernacle was made with intentionality to bring God’s presence among His people, how can you contribute to the unity and strength of your community through your words and actions?

BOTTOM LINE
Our words and actions, when used wisely and with care, can build strong relationships and communities, reflecting God’s unity and glory.

PRAYER
Heavenly Father, help me to be mindful of my words and actions. May I speak with kindness and purpose, building up those around me rather than tearing them down. Help me to put in my best effort in all that I do, so that I can bring unity and strength to my relationships and to Your kingdom. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
