“A bribe is like a magic stone in the eyes of the one who gives it; wherever he turns he prospers. Whoever covers an offense seeks love, but he who repeats a matter separates close friends.” — Proverbs 17:8–9 (ESV)

“And when the people of Ashdod rose early the next day, behold, Dagon had fallen face downward on the ground before the ark of the Lord. So they took Dagon and set him up in his place again.” — 1 Samuel 5:3 (ESV)

________________________________________

Have you ever watched a situation completely flip overnight—like the underdog team beating the champion or the quiet kid getting the highest score on the test? That’s kind of what happened in 1 Samuel 5. The Philistines thought their idol, Dagon, was unbeatable until they placed the ark of God in his temple. The next morning, Dagon was facedown, like he was bowing to the true God!

Meanwhile, Proverbs 17 reminds us of two things: people chase quick fixes (like bribes) to get ahead, but real success comes when we choose love over drama and gossip. When God shows up, like He did in the temple of Dagon, He reveals what really lasts—love, truth, and His power—not shortcuts, idols, or lies.

It’s easy to rely on things like popularity, money, or even our own strength. But those things can fall flat fast. God wants us to trust Him, love people well, and let His power—not our plans—win the battles.

THINK ABOUT IT

1. False Idols Fall: What “idols” or distractions might be stealing your trust in God right now, like Dagon in 1 Samuel 5?

2. Love Over Drama: Proverbs says covering offenses brings love (Proverbs 17:9). How can you let go of gossip or grudges this week to protect friendships and show God’s love?

3. Trust His Power: How does seeing God’s power in the Bible help you trust Him with your problems today?

________________________________________

BOTTOM LINE

When God shows up, idols fall, love wins, and His power changes everything.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, thank You for showing me that You are greater than anything I face. Help me to trust Your power instead of chasing shortcuts or holding onto things that can’t save me. Teach me to choose love over drama and to let You win the battles in my life. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

1
00:00:02,480 –> 00:00:05,800
Welcome to Bible Chat, where we
have devotional conversations

2
00:00:06,120 –> 00:00:11,800
rooted in Scripture and relevant
for today, June 5th, when God

3
00:00:11,800 –> 00:00:14,960
shows up.
Picture this.

4
00:00:15,320 –> 00:00:18,000
A team walks onto the field as
the clear underdog.

5
00:00:18,480 –> 00:00:22,160
Nobody gives them a chance.
The other side has the talent,

6
00:00:22,320 –> 00:00:26,320
the experience, the crowd, but
somehow, against all odds, the

7
00:00:26,320 –> 00:00:28,880
underdog wins.
There’s something deeply

8
00:00:28,880 –> 00:00:32,000
satisfying about that kind of
story, isn’t there?

9
00:00:32,920 –> 00:00:36,800
That satisfaction traces back to
something deep within us, a

10
00:00:36,800 –> 00:00:41,200
sense that justice matters, that
the strong don’t always win, and

11
00:00:41,200 –> 00:00:44,240
that sometimes a power greater
than what we can see steps into

12
00:00:44,240 –> 00:00:46,600
the situation and changes
everything.

13
00:00:47,520 –> 00:00:50,840
That’s basically First Samuel
chapter 5 in a nutshell.

14
00:00:51,720 –> 00:00:55,960
The Philistines had captured the
Ark of God, a sacred symbol of

15
00:00:55,960 –> 00:00:59,320
God’s presence, and brought it
into the temple of their idol,

16
00:00:59,320 –> 00:01:03,720
Dagon, as if it were a trophy.
But the next morning they found

17
00:01:03,720 –> 00:01:06,200
Dagon face down on the ground
before the ark.

18
00:01:06,640 –> 00:01:10,560
They set him back up.
The next morning he was face

19
00:01:10,560 –> 00:01:13,800
down again, this time with his
head and hands broken off.

20
00:01:14,320 –> 00:01:17,600
God didn’t need an army.
He didn’t need a speech.

21
00:01:18,120 –> 00:01:20,320
He just showed up and the idol
fell.

22
00:01:21,200 –> 00:01:24,480
The message is clear, and it’s
as relevant today as it was

23
00:01:24,480 –> 00:01:27,120
then.
Whatever you put in God’s place

24
00:01:27,120 –> 00:01:30,760
will eventually fall.
No idol holds its ground before

25
00:01:30,760 –> 00:01:34,480
the living God.
Not popularity, not success, not

26
00:01:34,480 –> 00:01:38,280
relationships, not social media
validation, not money.

27
00:01:38,720 –> 00:01:42,360
Whatever we bow to that isn’t
God will eventually let us down.

28
00:01:43,280 –> 00:01:47,640
Proverbs chapter 17, verses 8
and 9 add another layer to this.

29
00:01:48,040 –> 00:01:51,880
People chase quick fixes, things
like bribes, shortcuts, and

30
00:01:51,880 –> 00:01:53,920
manipulation to get what they
want.

31
00:01:54,360 –> 00:01:58,120
But real success, real
relationship, real blessing

32
00:01:58,120 –> 00:02:01,320
comes when we cover offenses
with love instead of spreading

33
00:02:01,320 –> 00:02:05,040
them as gossip, When we choose
to protect people rather than

34
00:02:05,040 –> 00:02:08,840
tear them down.
Here’s how this connects We live

35
00:02:08,840 –> 00:02:10,960
in a culture obsessed with
shortcuts.

36
00:02:11,400 –> 00:02:14,480
We want the quick path to
popularity, to success, to

37
00:02:14,480 –> 00:02:17,280
connection.
And sometimes those shortcuts

38
00:02:17,280 –> 00:02:20,440
look harmless.
A little exaggeration here, a

39
00:02:20,440 –> 00:02:24,320
little gossip there, leaning on
influence instead of integrity.

40
00:02:24,760 –> 00:02:27,160
But Proverbs is saying those
things don’t last.

41
00:02:27,640 –> 00:02:30,320
They’re like Dagon.
They look impressive until God

42
00:02:30,320 –> 00:02:32,560
shows up, and then they fall
flat.

43
00:02:33,440 –> 00:02:37,240
God’s weight is slower.
Sometimes it requires patience,

44
00:02:37,240 –> 00:02:40,240
faithfulness, love.
But what’s built God’s way

45
00:02:40,240 –> 00:02:42,720
stands.
Let’s pray.

46
00:02:43,720 –> 00:02:46,800
Heavenly Father, thank You for
reminding us that You are

47
00:02:46,800 –> 00:02:50,880
greater than anything we face or
anything we’re tempted to put in

48
00:02:50,880 –> 00:02:53,840
Your place.
Help us to recognize the idols

49
00:02:53,840 –> 00:02:57,560
in our own lives, the things we
trust more than You, and let

50
00:02:57,560 –> 00:03:00,040
them fall.
Teach us to choose love over

51
00:03:00,040 –> 00:03:03,880
drama, integrity over shortcuts,
and faith over fear.

52
00:03:04,320 –> 00:03:08,080
When you show up, everything
changes and we trust that you

53
00:03:08,080 –> 00:03:11,240
always show up in Jesus name,
Amen.

54
00:03:13,480 –> 00:03:16,680
When the battle feels personal,
relentless, and too heavy to

55
00:03:16,680 –> 00:03:19,640
name, your prayers do not have
to fall silent.

56
00:03:20,280 –> 00:03:23,480
Under Siege is a prayer script
series for believers walking

57
00:03:23,480 –> 00:03:27,680
through fear, betrayal,
spiritual pressure and unseen

58
00:03:27,680 –> 00:03:30,280
conflict.
With a warm, faith centered

59
00:03:30,280 –> 00:03:32,640
focus.
These books give voice to the

60
00:03:32,640 –> 00:03:36,720
cry for help, the fight for a
steady mind, the weariness that

61
00:03:36,720 –> 00:03:41,080
longs to run, the chaos of
hostile environments, the pain

62
00:03:41,080 –> 00:03:44,240
of broken trust, and the
confidence to leave judgement in

63
00:03:44,240 –> 00:03:46,840
God’s hands.
This series helps you pray with

64
00:03:46,840 –> 00:03:49,480
discernment, endurance, and
covenant trust.

65
00:03:49,480 –> 00:03:53,120
When the pressure is real and
the path feels narrow, stand

66
00:03:53,120 –> 00:03:55,000
firm.
Pray clearly.

67
00:03:55,360 –> 00:03:57,840

people in the middle of the

00:03:57,840 –> 00:04:00,840
battle.

71
00:04:12,680 –> 00:04:17,040
Proverbs, chapter 17, verses 8
to 9 World English Bible.

72
00:04:17,480 –> 00:04:20,519
A bribe is a precious stone in
the eyes of him who gives it.

73
00:04:20,800 –> 00:04:25,120
Wherever he turns, he prospers.
He who covers an offence

74
00:04:25,120 –> 00:04:28,120
promotes love, but he who
repeats a matter separates.

75
00:04:28,120 –> 00:04:32,760
Best Friends First Samuel
Chapter 5 World English Bible

76
00:04:33,800 –> 00:04:37,000
Now the Philistines had taken
God’s ark, and they brought it

77
00:04:37,000 –> 00:04:40,920
from Ebenezer to Ashdod.
The Philistines took God’s ark

78
00:04:41,120 –> 00:04:44,120
and brought it into the House of
Dagon, and said it by Dagon.

79
00:04:45,160 –> 00:04:48,880
When the people of Ashdod arose
early on the next day, behold,

80
00:04:49,240 –> 00:04:52,680
Dagon had fallen on his face to
the ground before Yahweh’s ark.

81
00:04:53,280 –> 00:04:55,680
They took Dagon and set him in
his place again.

82
00:04:56,720 –> 00:05:00,640
When they arose early on the
following morning, behold, Dagon

83
00:05:00,640 –> 00:05:04,800
had fallen on his face to the
ground before Yahweh’s ark, and

84
00:05:04,800 –> 00:05:08,360
the head of Dagon and both the
palms of his hands were cut off

85
00:05:08,360 –> 00:05:12,480
on the threshold.
Only Dagon’s torso was intact.

86
00:05:12,960 –> 00:05:16,120
Therefore, neither the priests
of Dagon nor any who come into

87
00:05:16,120 –> 00:05:19,960
Dagon’s house step on the
threshold of Dagon in Ashdod to

88
00:05:19,960 –> 00:05:23,240
this day.
But Yahweh’s hand was heavy on

89
00:05:23,240 –> 00:05:26,320
the people of Ashdod, and he
destroyed them and struck them

90
00:05:26,320 –> 00:05:29,120
with tumors, even Ashdod and its
borders.

91
00:05:30,160 –> 00:05:34,080
When the men of Ashdod saw that
it was so, they said, The ark of

92
00:05:34,080 –> 00:05:38,240
the God of Israel shall not stay
with us, for His hand is severe

93
00:05:38,240 –> 00:05:42,360
on us and on Dagon, our God.
They sent therefore and gathered

94
00:05:42,360 –> 00:05:46,360
together all the Lords of the
Philistines, and said, What

95
00:05:46,360 –> 00:05:48,640
shall we do with the ark of the
God of Israel?

96
00:05:48,960 –> 00:05:52,200
They answered, Let the ark of
the God of Israel be carried

97
00:05:52,200 –> 00:05:54,960
over to Gath.
They carried the ark of the God

98
00:05:54,960 –> 00:05:58,400
of Israel there.
It was so that after they had

99
00:05:58,400 –> 00:06:01,800
carried it there, Yahweh’s hand
was against the city with a very

100
00:06:01,800 –> 00:06:05,720
great confusion, and he struck
the men of the city, both small

101
00:06:05,720 –> 00:06:08,920
and great, so that tumors broke
out on them.

102
00:06:09,960 –> 00:06:14,960
So they sent God’s ark to Ekron.
As God’s ark came to Ekron, the

103
00:06:14,960 –> 00:06:18,240
Ekronites cried out, saying,
They have brought the ark of the

104
00:06:18,240 –> 00:06:22,240
God of Israel here to us, to
kill us and our people.

105
00:06:22,880 –> 00:06:25,800
They sent therefore and gathered
together all the Lords of the

106
00:06:25,800 –> 00:06:29,640
Philistines, and they said, Send
the ark of the God of Israel

107
00:06:29,640 –> 00:06:34,360
away, and let it go again to its
own place, that it not kill us

108
00:06:34,360 –> 00:06:36,920
and our people.
For there was a deadly panic

109
00:06:36,920 –> 00:06:40,800
throughout all the city.
The hand of God was very heavy

110
00:06:40,800 –> 00:06:42,840
there.
The men who didn’t die were

111
00:06:42,840 –> 00:06:45,840
struck with the tumors, and the
cry of the city went up to.

112
00:06:45,840 –> 00:06:51,240
