“Grandchildren are the crown of the aged, and the glory of children is their fathers. Fine speech is not becoming to a fool; still less is false speech to a prince.” — Proverbs 17:6–7 (ESV)

“But God shoots his arrow at them; they are wounded suddenly. They are brought to ruin, with their own tongues turned against them.” — Psalm 64:7–8 (ESV)

“And the Lord came and stood, calling as at other times, ‘Samuel! Samuel!’ And Samuel said, ‘Speak, for your servant hears.’” — 1 Samuel 3:10 (ESV)

Have you ever been in a noisy room where it was hard to hear someone calling your name? Life can feel like that sometimes—full of noise, distractions, and voices competing for our attention. In 1 Samuel 3, young Samuel heard God calling him in the middle of the night. At first, he didn’t even realize it was God! Meanwhile, Proverbs 17 reminds us that wise and truthful words are precious, while foolish or deceitful speech brings trouble. Psalm 64 shows us how God responds to those who use their words for harm—He sees and He acts.

Sometimes we want God to speak, but our lives are so loud we can’t hear Him. Other times, we hear Him clearly but hesitate to respond. Samuel shows us the right attitude: “Speak, for your servant hears.” When God speaks—through His Word, in prayer, or through people He places in our lives—He wants us to listen and obey.

THINK ABOUT IT

1. God Is Speaking: How can you make space in your life to hear God’s voice, like Samuel did in 1 Samuel 3:10?

2. Words Matter: Proverbs 17:7 warns against false or foolish speech. How can your words today reflect wisdom and truth instead of gossip or negativity?

3. God Sees Injustice: Psalm 64 shows God’s response to harmful words and actions. How does knowing this help you trust Him when people speak against you or others unfairly?

BOTTOM LINE

God is always speaking—make space to hear Him, respond with obedience, and let your words honor Him.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, thank You for speaking through Your Word and guiding my life. Help me to be still and listen when You call, to use my words wisely, and to trust You in every situation. Teach me to respond like Samuel, ready to obey Your voice. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

00:00:02,480 –> 00:00:05,800
Welcome to Bible Chat, where we
have devotional conversations

2
00:00:06,120 –> 00:00:11,880
rooted in Scripture and relevant
for today, June 4th, when God

3
00:00:11,880 –> 00:00:15,360
speaks.
Imagine being in the middle of

4
00:00:15,360 –> 00:00:18,480
the night, deep in sleep, and
you hear your name called

5
00:00:18,480 –> 00:00:21,480
clearly, unmistakably.
What would you do?

6
00:00:22,040 –> 00:00:25,480
That’s exactly what happened to
a young boy named Samuel in

7
00:00:25,480 –> 00:00:28,840
First Samuel chapter 3.
He heard his name called 3

8
00:00:28,840 –> 00:00:31,600
times.
Three times he ran to the priest

9
00:00:31,680 –> 00:00:35,520
Eli thinking it was him, and
three times Eli told him he

10
00:00:35,520 –> 00:00:38,480
hadn’t called.
Finally Eli realized what was

11
00:00:38,480 –> 00:00:41,560
happening and gave Samuel the
most important instruction of

12
00:00:41,560 –> 00:00:45,360
his young life.
If you hear it again, say speak

13
00:00:45,360 –> 00:00:49,200
Lord, for your servant hears.
And that’s exactly what

14
00:00:49,200 –> 00:00:52,200
happened.
First Samuel chapter 3 verse 10

15
00:00:52,200 –> 00:00:54,480
says.
And the Lord came and stood

16
00:00:54,640 –> 00:00:56,680
calling as at other times,
Samuel.

17
00:00:57,160 –> 00:01:01,800
Samuel and Samuel said, Speak
for your servant hears 4 words

18
00:01:01,800 –> 00:01:04,640
that changed everything your
servant hears.

19
00:01:04,760 –> 00:01:09,000
Not leave me alone, not let me
think about it, not I’m busy,

20
00:01:09,400 –> 00:01:13,040
just a heart open, ready,
available, ready to receive

21
00:01:13,040 –> 00:01:17,480
whatever God had to say.
Now here’s the thing, one of the

22
00:01:17,480 –> 00:01:21,280
reasons Samuel almost missed the
voice of God was because it was

23
00:01:21,280 –> 00:01:24,640
unfamiliar to him.
The Bible says Samuel didn’t yet

24
00:01:24,640 –> 00:01:27,120
know the Lord.
He hadn’t developed that

25
00:01:27,120 –> 00:01:30,880
intimacy yet.
And honestly, that’s a lot of

26
00:01:30,880 –> 00:01:33,800
us.
We want to hear from God, but we

27
00:01:33,800 –> 00:01:37,000
haven’t spent enough time with
him to recognize his voice when

28
00:01:37,000 –> 00:01:40,160
he speaks.
God speaks through his word.

29
00:01:40,640 –> 00:01:44,120
He speaks through prayer.
He speaks through wise people he

30
00:01:44,120 –> 00:01:47,680
places in our lives.
He speaks in the quiet moments

31
00:01:47,840 –> 00:01:49,840
when we’re not distracted by the
noise.

32
00:01:50,280 –> 00:01:54,160
But if our lives are constantly
full of screen time, drama,

33
00:01:54,280 –> 00:01:57,960
music blaring, and notifications
pinging, we’re going to miss it.

34
00:01:58,440 –> 00:02:01,520
Samuel had to be in a quiet
place for God to reach him.

35
00:02:02,480 –> 00:02:06,960
Proverbs chapter 17 verses 6:00
and 7:00 remind us that words

36
00:02:06,960 –> 00:02:09,560
matter.
Deeply true and wise speech is

37
00:02:09,560 –> 00:02:13,040
precious, while foolish or
deceitful words bring trouble.

38
00:02:13,440 –> 00:02:17,240
This connects to Samuel’s story.
When God finally spoke, it was

39
00:02:17,240 –> 00:02:20,400
truth.
It was real, and that truth

40
00:02:20,400 –> 00:02:23,280
required someone willing to
listen, not just talk.

41
00:02:24,200 –> 00:02:28,880
And Psalm 64 verses 7:00 and
8:00 remind us that God is not

42
00:02:28,880 –> 00:02:32,560
passive when injustice happens.
He sees when words are used to

43
00:02:32,560 –> 00:02:36,440
harm, when lies are spread, when
people are hurt by what others

44
00:02:36,440 –> 00:02:40,120
say, He responds.
That should bring us comfort

45
00:02:40,120 –> 00:02:44,040
when people speak against us and
conviction when we consider the

46
00:02:44,040 –> 00:02:47,640
impact of our own words.
Here’s the take away.

47
00:02:48,000 –> 00:02:51,680
Are you making space for God to
speak into your life, or is the

48
00:02:51,680 –> 00:02:54,880
noise winning?
God is always speaking through

49
00:02:54,880 –> 00:02:57,520
Scripture, through prayer,
through the Holy Spirit.

50
00:02:57,960 –> 00:03:00,520
The question isn’t whether he’s
saying something.

51
00:03:00,960 –> 00:03:03,600
The question is whether we’re
positioned to hear it.

52
00:03:04,520 –> 00:03:08,200
Let’s pray.
Heavenly Father, thank you for

53
00:03:08,200 –> 00:03:10,800
speaking to us through your Word
and through your Spirit.

54
00:03:11,320 –> 00:03:14,720
Like Samuel, help us to quiet
the noise around us and say

55
00:03:15,040 –> 00:03:17,320
speak.
Lord, your servant hears.

56
00:03:18,040 –> 00:03:21,520
Give us a heart that listens
before it speaks and ears that

57
00:03:21,520 –> 00:03:24,360
recognize your voice above
everything else, competing for

58
00:03:24,360 –> 00:03:27,240
our attention in Jesus name,
Amen.

59
00:03:29,480 –> 00:03:32,680
When the battle feels personal,
relentless, and too heavy to

60
00:03:32,680 –> 00:03:35,680
name, your prayers do not have
to fall silent.

61
00:03:36,320 –> 00:03:39,520
Under Siege is a prayer script
series for believers walking

62
00:03:39,520 –> 00:03:43,680
through fear, betrayal,
spiritual pressure and unseen

cry for help, the fight for a
steady mind, the weariness that

66
00:03:52,760 –> 00:03:57,120
longs to run, the chaos of
hostile environments, the pain

67
00:03:57,120 –> 00:04:00,240
of broken trust, and the
confidence to leave judgement in

68
00:04:00,240 –> 00:04:02,880
God’s hands.
This series helps you pray with

69
00:04:02,880 –> 00:04:05,520
discernment, endurance, and
covenant trust.

firm.

Psalm Chapter 64 World English

00:04:46,640 –> 00:04:51,120
Bible Hear my voice God in my

fear of the enemy, hide me from
the conspiracy of the wicked,

83
00:04:55,440 –> 00:04:58,920
from the noisy crowd of the ones
doing evil, who sharpen their

84
00:04:58,920 –> 00:05:01,640
tongue like a sword and aim
their arrows.

85
00:05:01,640 –> 00:05:04,960
Deadly words to shoot innocent
men from ambushes.

86
00:05:06,000 –> 00:05:08,080
They shoot at him suddenly and
fearlessly.

87
00:05:08,520 –> 00:05:10,760
They encourage themselves in
evil plans.

88
00:05:11,080 –> 00:05:13,240
They talk about laying snares
secretly.

89
00:05:14,240 –> 00:05:17,800
They say who will see them?
They plot injustice, saying We

90
00:05:17,800 –> 00:05:21,200
have made a perfect plan.
Surely man’s mind and heart are

91
00:05:21,200 –> 00:05:23,320
cunning, but God will shoot at
them.

92
00:05:24,360 –> 00:05:26,480
They will be suddenly struck
down with an arrow.

93
00:05:26,840 –> 00:05:28,440
Their own tongues shall ruin
them.

94
00:05:28,800 –> 00:05:30,600
All who see them will shake
their heads.

95
00:05:30,960 –> 00:05:34,960
All mankind shall be afraid.
They shall declare the work of

96
00:05:34,960 –> 00:05:37,800
God, and shall wisely ponder
what He has done.

97
00:05:38,280 –> 00:05:41,400
The righteous shall be glad in
Yahweh, and shall take refuge in

98
00:05:41,400 –> 00:05:43,560
Him.
All the upright and heart shall

99
00:05:43,560 –> 00:05:47,360
praise Him.
First Samuel, chapters 3 to 4.

100
00:05:47,640 –> 00:05:50,880
World English Bible.
The child Samuel ministered to

101
00:05:50,880 –> 00:05:54,320
Yahweh before Eli.
Yahweh’s word was rare in those

102
00:05:54,320 –> 00:05:56,720
days.
There were not many visions then

103
00:05:57,760 –> 00:06:01,960
at that time when Eli was laid
down in his place now, his eyes

104
00:06:01,960 –> 00:06:05,760
had begun to grow dim so that he
could not see, and God’s lamp

105
00:06:05,760 –> 00:06:10,080
hadn’t yet gone out, and Samuel
had laid down in Yahweh’s temple

106
00:06:10,080 –> 00:06:12,880
where God’s ark was.
Yahweh called Samuel.

107
00:06:13,920 –> 00:06:17,400
He said Here I am.
He ran to Eli and said here I am

108
00:06:17,400 –> 00:06:20,240
for you called me.
He said I didn’t call, lie down

109
00:06:20,240 –> 00:06:22,320
again.
He went and lay down.

110
00:06:23,360 –> 00:06:27,360
Yahweh called yet again Samuel.
Samuel arose and went to Eli and

111
00:06:27,360 –> 00:06:29,320
said, here I am, for you called
me.

112
00:06:29,760 –> 00:06:33,640
He answered I didn’t call my
son, lie down again.

113
00:06:34,080 –> 00:06:37,200
Now Samuel didn’t yet know
Yahweh, neither was Yahweh’s

114
00:06:37,200 –> 00:06:40,520
word yet revealed to him.
Yahweh called Samuel again.

115
00:06:40,520 –> 00:06:45,320
The third time he arose and went
to Eli, and said, Here I am, for

116
00:06:45,320 –> 00:06:48,040
you called me.
Eli perceived that Yahweh had

117
00:06:48,040 –> 00:06:51,480
called the child.
Therefore Eli said to Samuel, Go

118
00:06:51,480 –> 00:06:54,720
lie down.
It shall be if he calls you that

119
00:06:54,720 –> 00:06:57,720
you shall say, speak Yahweh, for
your servant hears.

120
00:06:58,360 –> 00:07:00,680
So Samuel went and lay down in
his place.

121
00:07:01,080 –> 00:07:04,720
Yahweh came and stood and called
as at other times, Samuel,

122
00:07:05,680 –> 00:07:08,480
Samuel.
Then Samuel said, Speak, for

123
00:07:08,480 –> 00:07:12,480
your servant hears.
Yahweh said to Samuel, Behold, I

124
00:07:12,480 –> 00:07:15,520
will do a thing in Israel at
which both the ears of everyone

125
00:07:15,520 –> 00:07:19,480
who hears it will tingle.
In that day I will perform

126
00:07:19,480 –> 00:07:23,000
against Eli all that I have
spoken concerning his house from

127
00:07:23,000 –> 00:07:27,000
the beginning even to the end.
For I have told him that I will

128
00:07:27,000 –> 00:07:30,520
judge his house forever for the
iniquity which he knew, because

129
00:07:30,520 –> 00:07:33,240
his sons brought a curse on
themselves, and he didn’t

130
00:07:33,240 –> 00:07:36,360
restrain them.
Therefore I have sworn to the

131
00:07:36,360 –> 00:07:39,920
House of Eli that the iniquity
of Eli’s house shall not be

132
00:07:39,920 –> 00:07:42,640
removed with sacrifice or
offering forever.

133
00:07:43,320 –> 00:07:47,400
Samuel lay until the morning and
open the doors of Yahweh’s

134
00:07:47,400 –> 00:07:50,640
house.
Samuel was afraid to show Eli

135
00:07:50,640 –> 00:07:53,680
the vision.
Then Eli called Samuel and said,

136
00:07:53,800 –> 00:07:56,560
Samuel, my son, he said, Here I
am.

137
00:07:57,000 –> 00:07:59,560
He said, What is the thing that
he has spoken to you?

138
00:07:59,920 –> 00:08:04,320
Please don’t hide it from me,
God do so to you and more also

139
00:08:04,320 –> 00:08:07,040
if you hide anything from me.
Of all the things that he spoke

140
00:08:07,040 –> 00:08:10,960
to you, Samuel told him every
bit and hid nothing from him.

141
00:08:11,280 –> 00:08:15,760
He said it is Yahweh, let him do
what seems good to him.

142
00:08:16,320 –> 00:08:19,640
Samuel grew and Yahweh was with
him and let none of his words

143
00:08:19,640 –> 00:08:23,480
fall to the ground.
All Israel from Dan even to

144
00:08:23,480 –> 00:08:26,880
Beersheba knew that Samuel was
established to be a prophet of

145
00:08:26,880 –> 00:08:29,760
Yahweh.
Yahweh appeared again in Shiloh,

146
00:08:30,120 –> 00:08:32,799
for Yahweh revealed himself to
Samuel in Shiloh.

147
00:08:32,799 –> 00:08:37,200
By Yahweh’s word, the word of
Samuel came to all Israel.

148
00:08:37,720 –> 00:08:40,919
Now Israel went out against the
Philistines to battle and

149
00:08:40,919 –> 00:08:44,320
encamped beside Ebenezer, and
the Philistines encamped.

150
00:08:44,320 –> 00:08:48,280
In effect, the Philistines put
themselves in array against

151
00:08:48,280 –> 00:08:52,120
Israel when they joined battle.
Israel was defeated by the

152
00:08:52,120 –> 00:08:55,760
Philistines who killed about
4000 men of the army in the

153
00:08:55,760 –> 00:08:59,040
field when the people had come
into the camp.

154
00:08:59,360 –> 00:09:03,040
The elders of Israel said, why
has Yahweh defeated us today

155
00:09:03,040 –> 00:09:06,720
before the Philistines?
Let’s get the Ark of Yahweh’s

156
00:09:06,720 –> 00:09:10,040
covenant out of Shiloh and bring
it to us, that it may come among

157
00:09:10,040 –> 00:09:12,520
us and save us out of the hand
of our enemies.

158
00:09:13,120 –> 00:09:17,200
So the people sent to Shiloh and
they brought from there the Ark

159
00:09:17,200 –> 00:09:20,040
of the Covenant of Yahweh of
armies, who sits above the

160
00:09:20,040 –> 00:09:23,200
Cherubim.
And the two sons of Eli, Hofni

161
00:09:23,200 –> 00:09:26,680
and Feynhus were there with the
Ark of the Covenant of God.

162
00:09:27,680 –> 00:09:30,960
When the ark of Yahweh’s
covenant came into the camp, all

163
00:09:30,960 –> 00:09:33,760
Israel shouted with a great
shout, so that the earth

164
00:09:33,760 –> 00:09:36,720
resounded.
When the Philistines heard the

165
00:09:36,720 –> 00:09:39,920
noise of the shout, they said,
What does the noise of this

166
00:09:39,920 –> 00:09:42,120
great shout in the camp of the
Hebrews mean?

167
00:09:42,720 –> 00:09:45,560
They understood that Yahweh’s
ark had come into the camp.

168
00:09:46,560 –> 00:09:49,560
The Philistines were afraid, for
they said, God has come into the

169
00:09:49,560 –> 00:09:52,400
camp.
They said, woe to us, for there

170
00:09:52,400 –> 00:09:54,040
has not been such a thing
before.

171
00:09:54,120 –> 00:09:58,120
Woe to us who shall deliver us
out of the hand of these mighty

172
00:09:58,120 –> 00:10:00,760
gods.
These are the gods that struck

173
00:10:00,760 –> 00:10:03,720
the Egyptians with all kinds of
plagues in the wilderness.

174
00:10:04,760 –> 00:10:08,840
Be strong and behave like men, O
you Philistines, that you not be

175
00:10:08,840 –> 00:10:11,360
servants to the Hebrews as they
have been to you.

176
00:10:12,480 –> 00:10:14,480
Strengthen yourselves like men
and fight.

177
00:10:14,960 –> 00:10:18,160
The Philistines fought and
Israel was defeated, and each

178
00:10:18,160 –> 00:10:21,320
man fled to his tent.
There was a very great

179
00:10:21,320 –> 00:10:24,320
slaughter, for 30,000 footmen of
Israel fell.

180
00:10:24,960 –> 00:10:29,120
God’s ark was taken, and the two
sons of Eli, Hofni and Feinhaus

181
00:10:29,120 –> 00:10:32,520
were slain.
A man of Benjamin ran out of the

182
00:10:32,520 –> 00:10:36,560
army and came to Shiloh the same
day with his clothes torn and

183
00:10:36,560 –> 00:10:40,760
with dirt on his head.
When he came, behold, Eli was

184
00:10:40,760 –> 00:10:44,080
sitting on his seat by the road
watching, for his heart trembled

185
00:10:44,080 –> 00:10:46,960
for God’s ark.
When the man came into the city

186
00:10:46,960 –> 00:10:49,400
and told about it all the city
cried out.

187
00:10:50,400 –> 00:10:53,360
When Eli heard the noise of the
crying, he said, What does the

188
00:10:53,360 –> 00:10:56,840
noise of this tumult mean?
The man hurried and came and

189
00:10:56,840 –> 00:11:00,280
told Eli.
Now Eli was 98 years old.

190
00:11:01,280 –> 00:11:03,520
His eyes were set so that he
could not see.

191
00:11:04,520 –> 00:11:08,280
The man said to Eli, I am he who
came out of the army, and I fled

192
00:11:08,280 –> 00:11:11,680
today out of the army.
He said, How did the matter go,

193
00:11:11,680 –> 00:11:13,640
My son?
He who brought the news

194
00:11:13,640 –> 00:11:18,160
answered, Israel has fled before
the Philistines, and there has

195
00:11:18,160 –> 00:11:20,320
been also a great slaughter
among the people.

196
00:11:21,360 –> 00:11:25,400
Your two sons also Hofni and
Finehus are dead, and God’s ark

197
00:11:25,400 –> 00:11:28,400
has been captured.
When he made mention of God’s

198
00:11:28,400 –> 00:11:31,520
ark, Eli fell from off his seat
backward by the side of the

199
00:11:31,520 –> 00:11:36,280
gate, and his neck broke and he
died, for he was an old man and

200
00:11:36,280 –> 00:11:39,600
heavy.
He had judged Israel 40 years.

201
00:11:40,000 –> 00:11:43,360
His daughter-in-law fine.
His wife was with child near to

202
00:11:43,360 –> 00:11:47,640
giving birth when she heard the
news that God’s ark was taken

203
00:11:47,800 –> 00:11:50,040
and that her father-in-law and
her husband were dead.

204
00:11:50,440 –> 00:11:52,760
She bowed herself and gave birth
for her.

205
00:11:52,760 –> 00:11:56,120
Pains came on her about the time
of her death.

206
00:11:56,120 –> 00:11:59,600
The women who stood by her said
to her, Don’t be afraid, for you

207
00:11:59,600 –> 00:12:03,160
have given birth to a son.
But she didn’t answer, neither

208
00:12:03,160 –> 00:12:06,600
did she regard it.
She named the child Ichabod,

209
00:12:06,600 –> 00:12:11,120
saying the glory has departed
from Israel because God’s ark

210
00:12:11,120 –> 00:12:13,400
was taken.
And because of her father-in-law

211
00:12:13,400 –> 00:12:18,080
and her husband, she said, the
glory has departed from Israel,

212
00:12:18,320 –> 00:12:23,560
for God’s ark has been taken.
