“A worthless man plots evil, and his speech is like a scorching fire. Whoever winks with his eyes plans perversity, and whoever purses his lips brings evil to pass.” — Proverbs 16:27–30 (ESV)

“For you, O God, have heard my vows; you have given me the heritage of those who fear your name.” — Psalm 61:5 (ESV)

“Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice.” — Ephesians 4:31 (ESV)

Have you ever noticed how quickly words can hurt? A single comment in class, a group chat message, or even a joking remark can set off a chain reaction. Proverbs 16:27–30 warns that careless or malicious speech spreads damage like fire. But God calls us to something higher. In Psalm 61, David reminds us that God hears us and provides a place of refuge when life feels heavy. And in Ephesians 4, Paul encourages us to rid ourselves of bitterness, anger, and slander, replacing them with grace and patience.

The truth is, your words reflect what’s in your heart. If your heart is full of frustration, fear, or jealousy, it can spill out in ways that hurt others and even yourself. But when your heart rests in God, you gain perspective, self-control, and the ability to speak life instead of destruction. It’s not easy—sometimes friendships, family conflicts, or stress at school test our patience—but this is where God wants you to grow.

THINK ABOUT IT

1. Check Your Heart: What kinds of thoughts or feelings tend to influence your words the most? How can you guard your heart so your words reflect God’s love (Proverbs 16:27–28; Ephesians 4:31)?

2. Find Your Refuge: How does remembering that God hears you and protects you (Psalm 61:5) help you stay calm and respond wisely when life feels stressful?

3. Choose Life-Giving Words: What is one specific way you can replace anger, bitterness, or gossip with encouragement or kindness today (Ephesians 4:31–32)?

________________________________________

BOTTOM LINE

Your words have power—let them come from a heart anchored in God, spreading life, not harm.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, thank You for being my refuge and for giving me the strength to control my words. Help me to replace anger and bitterness with kindness, patience, and encouragement. Guard my heart so that everything I say reflects Your love and truth. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

1
00:00:02,440 –> 00:00:05,800
Welcome to Bible Chat, where we
have devotional conversations

2
00:00:06,120 –> 00:00:08,280
rooted in Scripture and relevant
for today.

3
00:00:10,280 –> 00:00:13,600
May 29th Guard your heart.
Guard your words.

4
00:00:13,960 –> 00:00:16,760
Have you ever watched a small
spark turn into something much

5
00:00:16,760 –> 00:00:20,960
bigger than anyone intended?
A comment that seemed harmless,

6
00:00:21,240 –> 00:00:24,640
A rumor passed along without
thinking, A heated reply in a

7
00:00:24,640 –> 00:00:27,720
group chat, and suddenly
something is burning that wasn’t

8
00:00:27,720 –> 00:00:30,680
there before.
Words have that kind of power.

9
00:00:31,720 –> 00:00:34,960
They travel fast, and they leave
marks that are hard to undo.

10
00:00:35,520 –> 00:00:40,080
Proverbs chapter 16, verses 27
to 30 describes this vividly.

11
00:00:40,560 –> 00:00:43,400
A worthless person’s speech is
like a scorching fire.

12
00:00:43,720 –> 00:00:47,440
Perversity is planned.
Evil is brought to pass through

13
00:00:47,440 –> 00:00:52,400
careless or malicious words.
The imagery is intense, but if

14
00:00:52,400 –> 00:00:55,280
you’ve ever been on the
receiving end of damaging words

15
00:00:55,480 –> 00:00:58,480
or watched a friendship get
destroyed by gossip, you know

16
00:00:58,480 –> 00:01:01,720
the description is accurate.
Words are not neutral.

17
00:01:02,760 –> 00:01:05,360
They carry weight, direction,
and consequence.

18
00:01:05,800 –> 00:01:08,240
But here’s the thing.
Proverbs isn’t just talking

19
00:01:08,240 –> 00:01:11,680
about obviously cruel people.
The warning runs wider than

20
00:01:11,680 –> 00:01:14,520
that.
It’s talking about anyone who

21
00:01:14,520 –> 00:01:17,840
speaks without thinking, who
passes along something damaging

22
00:01:17,840 –> 00:01:20,800
without considering the cost,
who uses their words to

23
00:01:20,800 –> 00:01:24,800
manipulate or wound.
That can be any of us on a bad

24
00:01:24,800 –> 00:01:28,240
day, which is why this passage
calls us to guard something

25
00:01:28,240 –> 00:01:33,000
deeper than just our mouths.
Psalm 61 verse 5 brings in a

26
00:01:33,000 –> 00:01:36,880
stabilizing truth for you, O
God, have heard my vows.

27
00:01:37,920 –> 00:01:40,520
You have given me the heritage.
Of those who fear your name,

28
00:01:41,120 –> 00:01:45,080
David is reminding himself and
us that he belongs to God.

29
00:01:46,120 –> 00:01:49,120
He has a heritage, a place, a
standing with the Lord.

30
00:01:50,200 –> 00:01:53,160
And when your identity is secure
in that, when you know who you

31
00:01:53,160 –> 00:01:56,440
belong to and who you are,
you’re less likely to speak from

32
00:01:56,440 –> 00:01:59,160
a place of insecurity, fear, or
bitterness.

33
00:02:00,200 –> 00:02:03,520
A lot of damaging words come
from a wounded place inside us.

34
00:02:04,000 –> 00:02:05,720
We lash out because we’re
hurting.

35
00:02:05,960 –> 00:02:08,880
We gossip because we want to
feel better by comparison.

36
00:02:09,240 –> 00:02:11,960
We say sharp things because we
feel powerless.

37
00:02:12,960 –> 00:02:16,040
But when you know God hears you,
when you bring your struggles to

38
00:02:16,040 –> 00:02:19,080
Him, instead of venting them
sideways onto other people,

39
00:02:19,360 –> 00:02:23,840
something shifts.
Ephesians chapter 4, verse 31 is

40
00:02:23,840 –> 00:02:27,320
direct and practical.
Let all bitterness and wrath and

41
00:02:27,320 –> 00:02:30,560
anger and clamor and slander be
put away from you, along with

42
00:02:30,560 –> 00:02:32,360
all malice.
All of it.

43
00:02:33,360 –> 00:02:36,400
Not just the obvious stuff, but
the quiet resentment, the

44
00:02:36,400 –> 00:02:40,440
passive aggression, the subtle
digs disguised as jokes put it

45
00:02:40,440 –> 00:02:43,760
away.
And the verse following, which

46
00:02:43,760 –> 00:02:47,120
asks you to be kind, tender
hearted, and forgiving toward

47
00:02:47,120 –> 00:02:50,120
one another, makes clear that
this isn’t just about what you

48
00:02:50,120 –> 00:02:53,200
stop doing.
It’s about what you start doing

49
00:02:53,200 –> 00:02:55,560
instead.
Your heart is the source.

50
00:02:55,920 –> 00:02:58,680
Whatever is filling it is what
will eventually spill out

51
00:02:58,760 –> 00:03:01,440
through your words, your tone,
your reactions.

52
00:03:02,480 –> 00:03:05,880
If you’ve been carrying
frustration, fear, jealousy, or

53
00:03:05,880 –> 00:03:09,120
unresolved hurt, it will find
its way into your mouth at some

54
00:03:09,120 –> 00:03:11,640
point.
That’s not a condemnation.

55
00:03:11,760 –> 00:03:16,240
It’s just how human beings work.
Which is why the real work isn’t

56
00:03:16,240 –> 00:03:19,680
just about watching your words.
It’s about tending your heart,

57
00:03:20,160 –> 00:03:23,360
bringing what’s there, all of
it, to God, who can actually

58
00:03:23,360 –> 00:03:25,320
deal with it rather than just
suppress it.

59
00:03:26,360 –> 00:03:29,120
Today, before you send the
message, before you join the

60
00:03:29,120 –> 00:03:32,680
conversation, before you speak
into a tense moment, pause.

61
00:03:33,160 –> 00:03:37,000
Check what’s driving the words.
And if what you find there isn’t

62
00:03:37,000 –> 00:03:39,880
something you’d be comfortable
bringing before God, maybe

63
00:03:39,880 –> 00:03:41,480
that’s the thing to address
first.

64
00:03:41,920 –> 00:03:45,440
Let’s pray.
Heavenly Father, thank You for

65
00:03:45,440 –> 00:03:48,000
being my refuge and the one who
truly hears me.

66
00:03:49,000 –> 00:03:52,000
Help me to bring my
frustrations, my hurts, and my

67
00:03:52,000 –> 00:03:55,280
anxieties to You before they
spill out sideways and damage

68
00:03:55,280 –> 00:03:59,160
the people I care about.
Guard my heart, Lord, because I

69
00:03:59,160 –> 00:04:02,280
know my words.
Follow my heart where there is

70
00:04:02,280 –> 00:04:04,840
bitterness or resentment or
anger inside me.

71
00:04:05,080 –> 00:04:08,600
Bring Your healing and help me
to replace all of that with

72
00:04:08,600 –> 00:04:12,480
kindness, patience and grace.
Words that build up rather than

73
00:04:12,480 –> 00:04:15,320
tear down, that spread life
rather than damage.

74
00:04:15,840 –> 00:04:19,440
In Jesus name, Amen.
What if the battles hitting your

75
00:04:19,440 –> 00:04:22,680
family are not random and your
home can become a place where

76
00:04:22,680 –> 00:04:24,720
darkness loses every right to
stay?

His speech is like a scorching

95
00:05:36,160 –> 00:05:38,960
fire.
A perverse man stirs up strife.

96
00:05:39,400 –> 00:05:41,480
A whisperer separates close
friends.

97
00:05:42,520 –> 00:05:45,920
A man of violence entices his
neighbor and leads him in a way

that is not good.
One who winks his eyes to plot

bent on evil.

Bible Hear my cry God, listen to
my prayer from the end of the

earth.
I will call to you when my heart

103
00:06:02,880 –> 00:06:05,360
is overwhelmed.
Lead me to the rock that is

104
00:06:05,360 –> 00:06:08,560
higher than I.
For you have been a refuge for

105
00:06:08,560 –> 00:06:10,720
me, a strong tower from the
enemy.

106
00:06:11,160 –> 00:06:12,840
I will dwell in your tent
forever.

107
00:06:13,120 –> 00:06:15,440
I will take refuge in the
shelter of your wings.

108
00:06:15,800 –> 00:06:17,800
For you, God, have heard my
vows.

109
00:06:18,800 –> 00:06:20,120
You have given me the heritage

He shall be enthroned in God’s
presence forever.

Appoint your loving kindness and
truth that they may preserve him

114
00:06:33,480 –> 00:06:35,000
so.
I will sing praise to your name

115
00:06:35,000 –> 00:06:37,520
forever, that I may fulfill my
vows daily.

116
00:06:38,040 –> 00:06:41,200
Ephesians chapter 4 World
English Bible.

117
00:06:42,240 –> 00:06:45,720
I therefore, the prisoner in the
Lord, beg you to walk worthily

118
00:06:45,720 –> 00:06:48,920
of the calling with which you
were called, with all lowliness

119
00:06:48,920 –> 00:06:52,240
and humility, with patience,
bearing with one another in

120
00:06:52,240 –> 00:06:56,680
love, being eager to keep the
unity of the Spirit in the bond

121
00:06:56,680 –> 00:06:59,600
of peace.
There is one body and one

122
00:06:59,600 –> 00:07:02,520
Spirit, even as you also were
called in one hope of your

123
00:07:02,520 –> 00:07:07,160
calling, 1 Lord, 1 faith, one
baptism, one God and Father of

124
00:07:07,160 –> 00:07:09,800
all, who is over all and through
all, and in us all.

125
00:07:10,840 –> 00:07:13,840
But to each one of us the grace
was given according to the

126
00:07:13,840 –> 00:07:17,960
measure of the gift of Christ.
Therefore he says, when He

127
00:07:17,960 –> 00:07:21,160
ascended on high, He led
captivity captive and gave gifts

128
00:07:21,160 –> 00:07:23,840
to people.
Now this he ascended.

129
00:07:24,920 –> 00:07:27,920
What is it but that He also
first descended into the lower

130
00:07:27,920 –> 00:07:31,720
parts of the earth?
He who descended is the one who

131
00:07:31,720 –> 00:07:35,280
also ascended far above all the
heavens, that He might fill all

132
00:07:35,280 –> 00:07:38,840
things.
He gave some to be apostles, and

133
00:07:38,840 –> 00:07:42,520
some prophets, and some
evangelists, and some shepherds

134
00:07:42,520 –> 00:07:44,960
and teachers, for the perfecting
of the Saints.

135
00:07:44,960 –> 00:07:48,400
To the work of serving.
To the building up of the body

136
00:07:48,400 –> 00:07:52,160
of Christ, until we all attain
to the unity of the faith and of

137
00:07:52,160 –> 00:07:55,400
the knowledge of the Son of God.
To a full grown man.

138
00:07:56,440 –> 00:07:59,600
To the measure of the stature of
the fullness of Christ, that we

139
00:07:59,600 –> 00:08:03,080
may no longer be children tossed
back and forth, and carried

140
00:08:03,080 –> 00:08:06,440
about with every wind of
doctrine by the trickery of men

141
00:08:06,480 –> 00:08:09,760
in craftiness after the Wiles of
error.

142
00:08:10,120 –> 00:08:13,440
But speaking truth in love, we
may grow up in all things into

143
00:08:13,440 –> 00:08:18,120
Him who is the Head Christ, from
whom all the body being fitted

144
00:08:18,120 –> 00:08:21,120
and knit together, through that
which every joint supplies

145
00:08:21,480 –> 00:08:24,520
according to the working and
measure of each individual part,

146
00:08:24,880 –> 00:08:27,880
makes the body increase to the
building up of itself in love.

147
00:08:28,960 –> 00:08:32,600
This I say therefore, and
testify in the Lord, that you no

148
00:08:32,600 –> 00:08:36,120
longer walk as the rest of the
Gentiles also walk, in the

149
00:08:36,120 –> 00:08:39,679
futility of their mind being
darkened in their understanding,

150
00:08:40,760 –> 00:08:44,240
alienated from the life of God,
because of the ignorance that is

151
00:08:44,240 –> 00:08:48,240
in them, because of the
hardening of their hearts, They,

152
00:08:48,240 –> 00:08:51,800
having become callous, gave
themselves up to lust, to work

153
00:08:51,800 –> 00:08:55,840
all uncleanness with greediness.
But you didn’t learn Christ that

154
00:08:55,840 –> 00:08:59,440
way, if indeed you heard Him and
were taught in Him, even as

155
00:08:59,440 –> 00:09:02,880
truth is in Jesus.
That you put away as concerning

156
00:09:02,880 –> 00:09:07,480
your former way of life the old
man that grows corrupt after the

157
00:09:07,480 –> 00:09:10,600
lusts of deceit, and that you be
renewed in the spirit of your

158
00:09:10,600 –> 00:09:15,480
mind, and put on the new man who
in the likeness of God has been

159
00:09:15,480 –> 00:09:20,000
created in righteousness and
holiness of truth, Therefore

160
00:09:20,000 –> 00:09:22,880
putting away falsehood, speak
truth, each one with his

161
00:09:22,880 –> 00:09:25,520
neighbor, for we are members of
one another.

162
00:09:26,520 –> 00:09:29,960
Be angry and don’t sin.
Don’t let the sun go down on

163
00:09:29,960 –> 00:09:32,080
your wrath, and don’t give place
to the devil.

164
00:09:33,080 –> 00:09:36,600
Let him who stole steal no more,
but rather let him labor,

165
00:09:36,760 –> 00:09:39,800
producing with his hands
something that is good, that he

166
00:09:39,800 –> 00:09:42,000
may have something to give to
him who has need.

167
00:09:43,080 –> 00:09:46,600
Let no corrupt speech proceed
out of your mouth, but only what

168
00:09:46,600 –> 00:09:49,760
is good for building others up,
as the need may be, that it may

169
00:09:49,760 –> 00:09:54,000
give grace to those who hear.
Don’t grieve the Holy Spirit of

170
00:09:54,000 –> 00:09:56,800
God, in whom you were sealed for
the day of redemption.

171
00:09:57,360 –> 00:10:01,280
Let all bitterness, wrath,
anger, outcry and slander be put

172
00:10:01,280 –> 00:10:05,200
away from you with all malice,
and be kind to one another,

173
00:10:05,480 –> 00:10:08,760
tender hearted, forgiving each
other, just as God also in

174
00:10:08,760 –> 00:10:13,360
Christ forgave you.
