“Everyone who is arrogant in heart is an abomination to the Lord; be assured, he will not go unpunished. By steadfast love and faithfulness iniquity is atoned for, and by the fear of the Lord one turns away from evil.” — Proverbs 16:5–6 (ESV)

“We have spoken freely to you, Corinthians; our heart is wide open. You are not restricted by us, but you are restricted in your own affections.” — 2 Corinthians 6:11–12 (ESV)

“I rejoice, not that you were grieved, but that your grief led to repentance. For you felt a godly sorrow, so that you were not overwhelmed by it.” — 2 Corinthians 7:9 (ESV)

Life is full of choices, and sometimes it’s hard to know which path is right. Proverbs 16 reminds us that arrogance and pride lead to destruction, but choosing love, faithfulness, and reverence for God guides us away from trouble. Even when we make mistakes, God’s steadfast love provides a way to turn back and start over. In 2 Corinthians 6–7, Paul speaks to the power of open hearts and godly sorrow—when we face correction, we can either resist it or let it shape us into something better. Feeling convicted or remorseful isn’t a sign of failure; it’s a sign that God is working in your heart to guide you toward His best.

When you’re tempted to act selfishly, give in to pride, or ignore what’s right, remember that your choices have consequences. But the amazing news is that God’s love is bigger than your mistakes. He wants your heart to stay wide open to His guidance, and He can turn every moment of regret into growth.

THINK ABOUT IT

1. Check Your Heart: Are there areas of pride or arrogance in your life that might be blocking God’s blessing (Proverbs 16:5–6)?

2. Open Up: How can you keep your heart wide open to correction and guidance, even when it’s uncomfortable (2 Corinthians 6:11–12)?

3. Godly Sorrow vs. Guilt: How does understanding the difference between godly sorrow and guilt help you respond to mistakes in a way that leads to growth and not despair (2 Corinthians 7:9)?

________________________________________

BOTTOM LINE

Your choices matter, but God’s love and guidance can turn even mistakes into growth when your heart is open to Him.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your steadfast love that guides me even when I make mistakes. Help me to stay humble, avoid pride, and keep my heart wide open to Your correction. Teach me to respond with godly sorrow that leads to growth, and give me the courage to choose Your way over my own. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

00:00:02,440 –> 00:00:05,800
Welcome to Bible Chat, where we
have devotional conversations

2
00:00:06,120 –> 00:00:08,280
rooted in Scripture and relevant
for today.

3
00:00:10,280 –> 00:00:14,320
May 18th Choosing the right path
Let’s be honest about something.

4
00:00:15,440 –> 00:00:18,200
There are moments when the wrong
choice is really tempting.

5
00:00:18,640 –> 00:00:21,840
Not because it’s obviously
terrible, but because it seems

6
00:00:21,840 –> 00:00:25,320
easier, more satisfying in the
moment, or like it’ll make

7
00:00:25,320 –> 00:00:28,760
people like you more.
Maybe it’s going along with

8
00:00:28,760 –> 00:00:31,200
something that doesn’t sit right
with your conscience.

9
00:00:31,720 –> 00:00:34,600
Maybe it’s letting pride win in
an argument when you know you

10
00:00:34,600 –> 00:00:38,160
should back down.
Maybe it’s cutting a corner just

11
00:00:38,160 –> 00:00:40,440
to get ahead.
And in the moment, you can

12
00:00:40,440 –> 00:00:43,280
usually talk yourself into it.
We’re good at that.

13
00:00:44,320 –> 00:00:48,400
Proverbs chapter 16, verses 5
and 6 address that directly.

14
00:00:48,960 –> 00:00:52,000
Everyone who is arrogant in
heart is an abomination to the

15
00:00:52,000 –> 00:00:54,400
Lord.
Be assured he will not go

16
00:00:54,400 –> 00:00:57,520
unpunished.
By steadfast love and

17
00:00:57,520 –> 00:01:01,120
faithfulness, iniquity is atoned
for, and by the fear of the Lord

18
00:01:01,120 –> 00:01:04,360
one turns away from evil.
There’s a lot in those two

19
00:01:04,360 –> 00:01:07,400
verses.
Pride, not just loudmouth

20
00:01:07,400 –> 00:01:10,840
arrogance, but the quiet kind,
the kind that puts your own

21
00:01:10,840 –> 00:01:13,880
judgment above gods, has real
consequences.

22
00:01:14,880 –> 00:01:16,720
But look at the other side of
that coin.

23
00:01:17,160 –> 00:01:20,280
Steadfast love and faithfulness
are the path away from

24
00:01:20,280 –> 00:01:23,320
destruction and the fear of the
Lord.

25
00:01:23,520 –> 00:01:27,600
That humble recognition of who
God is is what actually turns us

26
00:01:27,600 –> 00:01:30,680
in the right direction.
This is so important for

27
00:01:30,680 –> 00:01:33,160
navigating the choices you face
every day.

28
00:01:34,120 –> 00:01:36,760
Pride whispers you know better,
do what feels good.

29
00:01:37,840 –> 00:01:41,560
You deserve this.
But humility says God, I want to

30
00:01:41,560 –> 00:01:44,360
honor you more than I want to
satisfy myself right now.

31
00:01:45,000 –> 00:01:48,400
That’s not always an easy prayer
to mean, but it’s a powerful

32
00:01:48,400 –> 00:01:54,360
one. 2nd Corinthians chapter 6,
verses 11 and 12 show us Paul’s

33
00:01:54,360 –> 00:01:57,840
heart laid completely open.
Our heart is wide open.

34
00:01:58,880 –> 00:02:01,680
You are not restricted by us,
but you are restricted in your

35
00:02:01,680 –> 00:02:05,120
own affections.
Paul is essentially saying we’re

36
00:02:05,120 –> 00:02:08,720
not the ones holding you back.
The limitation is inside you.

37
00:02:09,840 –> 00:02:12,440
Your own closed off heart is
what’s keeping you from the

38
00:02:12,440 –> 00:02:15,840
fullness of what God has for you
that’s worth sitting with.

39
00:02:16,920 –> 00:02:20,640
How often do we blame
circumstances, other people, or

40
00:02:20,640 –> 00:02:24,280
bad luck for where we are, when
really what needs to change is

41
00:02:24,280 –> 00:02:26,440
our willingness to let God in
completely?

42
00:02:27,480 –> 00:02:31,400
And then Second Corinthians
Chapter 7 verse 9 introduces A

43
00:02:31,400 –> 00:02:33,720
distinction that is genuinely
life changing.

44
00:02:34,280 –> 00:02:37,880
I rejoice not that you were
grieved, but that your grief led

45
00:02:37,880 –> 00:02:41,680
to repentance.
For you felt a godly sorrow so

46
00:02:41,680 –> 00:02:43,240
that you were not overwhelmed by
it.

47
00:02:43,800 –> 00:02:46,440
There is a difference between
godly sorrow and guilt.

48
00:02:47,520 –> 00:02:50,520
Guilt says I’m terrible, I’m a
failure, I’ll never get this

49
00:02:50,520 –> 00:02:53,000
right.
It spirals inward and leads to

50
00:02:53,000 –> 00:02:56,240
shame.
Godly sorrow says, I got this

51
00:02:56,240 –> 00:02:57,720
wrong and I want to make it
right.

52
00:02:58,240 –> 00:03:01,440
It turns outward toward God,
toward change, toward growth.

53
00:03:01,800 –> 00:03:05,640
One crushes you, the other frees
you when you mess up.

54
00:03:05,640 –> 00:03:09,040
And you will, because we all do.
The question isn’t whether you

55
00:03:09,040 –> 00:03:12,080
feel bad, it’s what direction
that feeling takes you.

56
00:03:12,600 –> 00:03:15,000
Does it drive you toward God or
away from Him?

57
00:03:16,120 –> 00:03:18,680
Does it motivate change or just
produce more shame?

58
00:03:19,160 –> 00:03:21,480
God’s love is bigger than your
worst choice.

59
00:03:21,840 –> 00:03:24,320
His grace covers what humility
brings to Him.

60
00:03:25,400 –> 00:03:28,480
And every moment of genuine
repentance is actually a step

61
00:03:28,480 –> 00:03:30,880
forward, not just a moment of
failure.

62
00:03:31,360 –> 00:03:33,960
The right path isn’t the path
where you never fall.

63
00:03:35,000 –> 00:03:37,640
It’s the path where you keep
getting back up and turning back

64
00:03:37,640 –> 00:03:39,480
toward Him.
Let’s pray.

65
00:03:39,880 –> 00:03:43,000
Heavenly Father, thank you for
your steadfast love that is

66
00:03:43,000 –> 00:03:44,920
bigger than my pride and my
mistakes.

67
00:03:45,960 –> 00:03:48,800
Help me to stay humble, to
choose your way over my own,

68
00:03:48,800 –> 00:03:52,320
even when it’s hard, where I’ve
been holding back, keeping my

69
00:03:52,320 –> 00:03:55,360
heart closed, or justifying
choices I know aren’t right.

70
00:03:55,520 –> 00:03:58,680
Soften me.
Teach me the difference between

71
00:03:58,680 –> 00:04:02,400
guilt, that paralysis, and godly
sorrow that brings real change.

72
00:04:02,960 –> 00:04:06,320
I want to walk the right path,
not because I’m perfect, but

73
00:04:06,320 –> 00:04:09,480
because I trust You in Jesus
name, Amen.

74
00:04:10,080 –> 00:04:13,320
What if the battles hitting your
family are not random and your

75
00:04:13,320 –> 00:04:16,320
home can become a place where
darkness loses every right to

76
00:04:16,320 –> 00:04:19,200
stay?

Now I invite you to spend time
with God in today’s three-year

92
00:05:16,320 –> 00:05:21,640
Bible reading plan.
Proverbs chapter 16 verses 5 to

93
00:05:21,640 –> 00:05:25,920
6 World English Bible.
Everyone who is proud in heart

94
00:05:25,920 –> 00:05:28,960
is an abomination to Yahweh.
They shall certainly not be

95
00:05:28,960 –> 00:05:33,960
unpunished by mercy and truth.
Iniquity is atoned for by the

96
00:05:33,960 –> 00:05:36,000
fear of Yahweh.
Men depart from evil.

97
00:05:36,400 –> 00:05:40,480
Second Corinthians chapters six
to seven world English Bible

98
00:05:41,480 –> 00:05:44,240
working together.
We entreat also that you do not

99
00:05:44,240 –> 00:05:46,200
receive the grace of God in
vain.

100
00:05:46,400 –> 00:05:51,200
For he says, at an acceptable
time, I listen to you in a day

101
00:05:51,200 –> 00:05:52,480
of salvation.
I helped you.

102
00:05:53,080 –> 00:05:55,360
Behold, now is the acceptable
time.

103
00:05:55,680 –> 00:05:57,880
Behold, now is the day of
salvation.

104
00:05:58,960 –> 00:06:02,640
We give no occasion of stumbling
in anything that our service may

105
00:06:02,640 –> 00:06:06,720
not be blamed, but in everything
commending ourselves as servants

106
00:06:06,720 –> 00:06:08,520
of God.
In great endurance.

107
00:06:08,520 –> 00:06:12,960
In afflictions, in hardships, in
distresses, in beatings, in

108
00:06:12,960 –> 00:06:16,160
imprisonments, in riots, in
laborers, in watchings, in

109
00:06:16,160 –> 00:06:19,840
fastings, in pureness, in
knowledge, in perseverance, in

110
00:06:19,840 –> 00:06:24,360
kindness, in the Holy Spirit, in
sincere love, in the word of

111
00:06:24,360 –> 00:06:28,080
truth, in the power of God.
By the armor of righteousness on

112
00:06:28,080 –> 00:06:31,680
the right hand and on the left.
By glory and dishonor, by evil

113
00:06:31,680 –> 00:06:36,520
report and good report, as
deceivers and yet true, as

114
00:06:36,520 –> 00:06:39,000
unknown and yet well known, as
dying.

115
00:06:39,000 –> 00:06:43,080
And behold, we live as punished
and not killed, as sorrowful,

116
00:06:43,080 –> 00:06:47,160
yet always rejoicing, as poor,
yet making many rich, as having

117
00:06:47,160 –> 00:06:50,200
nothing and yet possessing all
things.

118
00:06:51,240 –> 00:06:53,360
Our mouth is open to you,
Corinthians.

119
00:06:53,720 –> 00:06:56,920
Our heart is enlarged.
You are not restricted by us,

120
00:06:57,080 –> 00:06:59,400
but you are restricted by your
own affections.

121
00:07:00,440 –> 00:07:03,000
Now in return I speak as to my
children.

122
00:07:03,320 –> 00:07:06,600
You also open your hearts.
Don’t be unequally yoked with

123
00:07:06,600 –> 00:07:08,600
unbelievers.
For what fellowship do

124
00:07:08,600 –> 00:07:12,840
righteousness and iniquity have?
Or what fellowship does light

125
00:07:12,840 –> 00:07:15,760
have with darkness?
What agreement does Christ have

126
00:07:15,760 –> 00:07:18,360
with Belial?
Or what portion does a believer

127
00:07:18,360 –> 00:07:22,040
have with an unbeliever?
What agreement does a temple of

128
00:07:22,040 –> 00:07:24,840
God have with idols?
For you are a temple of the

129
00:07:24,840 –> 00:07:28,040
living God.
Even as God said, I will dwell

130
00:07:28,040 –> 00:07:31,480
in them and walk in them.
I will be their God, and they

131
00:07:31,480 –> 00:07:34,520
will be my people.
Therefore come out from among

132
00:07:34,520 –> 00:07:36,520
them and be separate, says the
Lord.

133
00:07:37,000 –> 00:07:39,360
Touch no unclean thing.
I will receive you.

134
00:07:39,600 –> 00:07:43,200
I will be to you a father, You
will be to me sons and

135
00:07:43,200 –> 00:07:45,200
daughters, says the Lord
Almighty.

136
00:07:45,840 –> 00:07:49,520
Having therefore these promises,
beloved, let’s cleanse ourselves

137
00:07:49,520 –> 00:07:53,920
from all defilement of flesh and
spirit, perfecting holiness in

138
00:07:53,920 –> 00:07:57,160
the fear of God.
Open your hearts to us.

139
00:07:57,320 –> 00:07:59,840
We wronged no one.
We corrupted no one.

140
00:08:00,000 –> 00:08:04,160
We took advantage of no one.
I say this not to condemn you,

141
00:08:04,480 –> 00:08:07,040
for I have said before that you
are in our hearts to die

142
00:08:07,040 –> 00:08:10,720
together and live together.
Great is my boldness of speech

143
00:08:10,720 –> 00:08:13,080
toward you.
Great is my boasting on your

144
00:08:13,080 –> 00:08:16,040
behalf.
I am filled with comfort.

145
00:08:16,360 –> 00:08:20,080
I overflow with joy in all our
affliction, for even when we had

146
00:08:20,080 –> 00:08:23,400
come into Macedonia our flesh
had no relief, but we were

147
00:08:23,400 –> 00:08:28,240
afflicted on every side.
Fightings were outside, fear was

148
00:08:28,240 –> 00:08:31,680
inside.
Nevertheless, He who comforts

149
00:08:31,680 –> 00:08:35,760
the lowly God comforted us by
the coming of Titus, and not by

150
00:08:35,760 –> 00:08:39,600
His coming only, but also by the
comfort with which He was

151
00:08:39,600 –> 00:08:42,679
comforted in you, while He told
us of your longing, your

152
00:08:42,679 –> 00:08:46,400
mourning, and your zeal for me,
so that I rejoiced still more.

153
00:08:47,400 –> 00:08:50,240
For though I grieved you with my
letter, I do not regret it,

154
00:08:50,440 –> 00:08:53,480
though I did regret it.
For I see that my letter made

155
00:08:53,480 –> 00:08:55,480
you grieve, though just for a
while.

156
00:08:56,520 –> 00:08:59,600
I now rejoice, not that you were
grieved, but that you were

157
00:08:59,600 –> 00:09:02,800
grieved to repentance.
For you were grieved in a godly

158
00:09:02,800 –> 00:09:05,600
way, that you might suffer loss
by us in nothing.

159
00:09:06,640 –> 00:09:10,160
For godly sorrow produces
repentance to salvation, which

160
00:09:10,160 –> 00:09:13,920
brings no regret, but the sorrow
of the world produces death.

161
00:09:15,000 –> 00:09:18,080
For behold this same thing, that
you were grieved in a godly way.

162
00:09:18,200 –> 00:09:19,680
What earnest carrot worked in
you?

163
00:09:20,320 –> 00:09:24,200
Yes, what defense, indignation,
fear, longing, zeal and

164
00:09:24,200 –> 00:09:28,600
vengeance in everything you
demonstrated yourselves to be

165
00:09:28,600 –> 00:09:32,360
pure in the matter.
So although I wrote to you, I

166
00:09:32,360 –> 00:09:35,400
wrote not for his ’cause that
did the wrong, nor for his

167
00:09:35,400 –> 00:09:38,680
’cause that suffered the wrong,
but that your earnest care for

168
00:09:38,680 –> 00:09:42,520
us might be revealed in you.
In the sight of God, therefore,

169
00:09:42,520 –> 00:09:44,760
we have been comforted in our
comfort.

170
00:09:44,760 –> 00:09:48,200
We rejoice the more exceedingly
for the joy of Titus, because

171
00:09:48,200 –> 00:09:50,360
his Spirit has been refreshed by
you all.

172
00:09:51,360 –> 00:09:54,440
For if in anything I have
boasted to him on your behalf, I

173
00:09:54,440 –> 00:09:57,800
was not disappointed.
But as we spoke all things to

174
00:09:57,800 –> 00:10:01,640
you in truth, so our glorying
also, which I made before Titus,

175
00:10:01,640 –> 00:10:05,480
was found to be truth.
His affection is more abundantly

176
00:10:05,480 –> 00:10:08,320
toward you, while he remembers
all of your obedience.

177
00:10:08,560 –> 00:10:10,960
How with fear and trembling you
received him.

178
00:10:11,600 –> 00:10:14,720
I rejoice that in everything I
am confident concerning you.
