“The plans of the heart belong to man, but the answer of the tongue is from the Lord.” — Proverbs 16:1 (ESV)

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.” — 2 Corinthians 1:3–4 (ESV)

“For we do not want you to be unaware, brothers, of the affliction we experienced in Asia. For we were so utterly burdened beyond our strength that we despaired of life itself.” — 2 Corinthians 1:8 (ESV)

Life is full of plans—tests, friendships, games, and dreams for the future. Sometimes it feels like you’ve got it all figured out, and other times everything seems to fall apart. Proverbs 16:1 reminds us that while we can make plans, God holds the final word. Even when things don’t go the way we want, His guidance and timing are perfect. Paul’s words in 2 Corinthians 1 show that comfort and encouragement often come from God through tough times. He reminds us that our struggles aren’t wasted; they equip us to help others who are hurting. And in 2 Corinthians 1:8, Paul shares honestly about feeling overwhelmed—showing that even strong believers face moments of despair, yet God’s presence never fails.

This means that your challenges, disappointments, and even your mistakes aren’t meaningless. God can turn them into lessons, growth, and opportunities to encourage others. When life feels out of control, choosing to trust God’s plan allows you to find peace and hope even in uncertainty.

THINK ABOUT IT

1. Trust in His Plan: How do you react when your plans don’t go the way you expected (Proverbs 16:1)? What steps can you take to hand those plans over to God?

2. Comfort Others: How have you experienced God’s comfort during tough times (2 Corinthians 1:3–4)? How can that help you encourage a friend who is hurting?

3. Strength Through Struggle: Paul was honest about feeling overwhelmed (2 Corinthians 1:8). How can acknowledging your struggles help you grow and rely more on God?

BOTTOM LINE

Even when life feels out of control, God’s plans are perfect, and He can use your struggles to comfort and strengthen others.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding me that my plans are in Your hands. Help me to trust You when things don’t go the way I expect, to find comfort in Your presence, and to use my experiences to encourage others. Teach me to rely on You in every situation, knowing that You are always working for my good. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

1
00:00:02,440 –> 00:00:05,800
Welcome to Bible Chat, where we
have devotional conversations

2
00:00:06,120 –> 00:00:07,800
rooted in scripture and relevant
for.

3
00:00:07,800 –> 00:00:12,920
Today, May 14th, plans in God’s
hands.

4
00:00:13,280 –> 00:00:15,560
Have you ever had a plan fall
apart completely?

5
00:00:16,600 –> 00:00:19,400
Maybe you worked really hard for
something, a grade, A

6
00:00:19,600 –> 00:00:23,320
relationship, an opportunity,
and it just didn’t come together

7
00:00:23,320 –> 00:00:26,480
the way you hoped.
Or maybe you had everything

8
00:00:26,480 –> 00:00:29,880
mapped out and life took a
sudden turn that you never saw

9
00:00:29,880 –> 00:00:33,480
coming.
That feeling of plans unraveling

10
00:00:33,480 –> 00:00:37,160
is one of the most disorienting
things we experience because we

11
00:00:37,160 –> 00:00:40,600
like to feel and control.
We like to know what comes next.

12
00:00:41,600 –> 00:00:45,040
Proverbs chapter 16 verse one
speaks directly into that

13
00:00:45,040 –> 00:00:47,480
tension.
The plans of the heart belong to

14
00:00:47,480 –> 00:00:50,320
man, but the answer of the
tongue is from the Lord.

15
00:00:50,920 –> 00:00:53,200
You make your plans, and that’s
not wrong.

16
00:00:54,360 –> 00:00:57,040
Planning, dreaming, working
towards something, all of that

17
00:00:57,040 –> 00:00:59,360
is good.
But the ultimate outcome?

18
00:00:59,360 –> 00:01:01,920
The final word that belongs to
God.

19
00:01:03,000 –> 00:01:06,000
And honestly, when you really
think about it, that’s not a

20
00:01:06,000 –> 00:01:08,720
threatening idea.
It’s actually one of the most

21
00:01:08,720 –> 00:01:12,960
comforting truths in Scripture
because it means the one holding

22
00:01:12,960 –> 00:01:16,240
the final word is not random
chance, not other people’s

23
00:01:16,240 –> 00:01:19,480
opinions, not your worst fears.
It’s God.

24
00:01:20,520 –> 00:01:23,840
Paul writes in Second
Corinthians chapter 1, verses 3

25
00:01:23,840 –> 00:01:26,720
and 4.
Blessed be the God and Father of

26
00:01:26,720 –> 00:01:30,400
our Lord Jesus Christ, the
Father of mercies and God of all

27
00:01:30,400 –> 00:01:35,600
comfort, who comforts us in all
our affliction, so that we may

28
00:01:35,600 –> 00:01:38,760
be able to comfort those who are
in any affliction with the

29
00:01:38,760 –> 00:01:41,840
comfort with which we ourselves
are comforted by God.

30
00:01:42,480 –> 00:01:44,800
Did you catch the ripple effect
in that verse?

31
00:01:45,840 –> 00:01:49,160
God comforts you, and then that
comfort doesn’t just stay with

32
00:01:49,160 –> 00:01:52,000
you, it flows through you to
someone else who’s hurting.

33
00:01:53,040 –> 00:01:56,440
Your difficult season becomes a
source of empathy and strength

34
00:01:56,520 –> 00:01:59,840
that you eventually offer to
someone else in theirs that

35
00:01:59,840 –> 00:02:02,680
reframes everything.
Your disappointment isn’t

36
00:02:02,680 –> 00:02:05,520
wasted.
Your struggle isn’t just

37
00:02:05,520 –> 00:02:09,000
something to survive.
It’s actually equipping you with

38
00:02:09,000 –> 00:02:12,040
something that no classroom or
textbook can teach.

39
00:02:12,600 –> 00:02:15,960
A lived experience of God’s
faithfulness that you can pass

40
00:02:15,960 –> 00:02:19,920
on to someone who needs it.
And then Paul gets incredibly

41
00:02:19,920 –> 00:02:23,120
honest in verse 8.
For we were so utterly burdened

42
00:02:23,120 –> 00:02:25,760
beyond our strength that we
despaired of life itself.

43
00:02:26,320 –> 00:02:30,880
This is the Apostle Paul,
someone whose faith we admire,

44
00:02:30,960 –> 00:02:33,720
whose letters we still read
thousands of years later.

45
00:02:34,200 –> 00:02:35,960
And he?
Admits to feeling completely

46
00:02:35,960 –> 00:02:39,760
overwhelmed, beyond strength to
the point of despair.

47
00:02:40,760 –> 00:02:43,360
If that’s not permission to be
real about your own hard

48
00:02:43,360 –> 00:02:46,960
moments, I don’t know what is.
You are allowed to say this is

49
00:02:46,960 –> 00:02:50,520
too much for me right now.
That’s not weakness, that’s

50
00:02:50,520 –> 00:02:54,160
honesty.
And honesty is exactly where God

51
00:02:54,160 –> 00:02:56,480
can meet you.
The beautiful thing is that

52
00:02:56,480 –> 00:02:59,880
Paul’s despair didn’t have the
final word in his story, and

53
00:02:59,880 –> 00:03:04,080
neither will yours.
When we release our plans, not

54
00:03:04,080 –> 00:03:07,720
just intellectually but actually
surrender them with open hands,

55
00:03:08,200 –> 00:03:11,600
we make room for God to work in
ways we couldn’t engineer on our

56
00:03:11,600 –> 00:03:14,160
own.
So wherever you are today,

57
00:03:14,160 –> 00:03:17,040
whether your plans are going
great or they just fell apart,

58
00:03:17,320 –> 00:03:19,200
bring them to God.
All of it.

59
00:03:19,640 –> 00:03:22,280
The dreams, the disappointments,
the question marks.

60
00:03:23,280 –> 00:03:26,760
He holds it all with perfect
wisdom and perfect love, and He

61
00:03:26,760 –> 00:03:29,560
can use every piece of it,
including the broken ones.

62
00:03:29,960 –> 00:03:33,480
Let’s pray.
Heavenly Father, thank you for

63
00:03:33,480 –> 00:03:37,000
the reminder that my plans are
held in Your hands when things

64
00:03:37,000 –> 00:03:39,920
go differently than I hoped.
Help me to trust that You are

65
00:03:39,920 –> 00:03:43,360
still working.
Teach me to find comfort in your

66
00:03:43,360 –> 00:03:46,880
presence and to stay open to
what you are doing even when I

67
00:03:46,880 –> 00:03:50,640
can’t see it clearly.
And God use what I’ve been

68
00:03:50,640 –> 00:03:54,360
through, the hard parts, the
confusing parts, to help me

69
00:03:54,360 –> 00:03:56,760
encourage someone else who is
walking through something

70
00:03:56,760 –> 00:04:00,400
similar.
I trust you with all of it in

71
00:04:00,480 –> 00:04:03,640
Jesus name, Amen.

72
00:04:03,640 –> 00:04:06,880

73
00:04:06,880 –> 00:04:08,920

Paul an apostle of Christ Jesus

94

through the will of God, and
Timothy our brother to the

95
00:05:30,720 –> 00:05:34,200
Assembly of God, which is at
Corinth with all the Saints who

96
00:05:34,200 –> 00:05:38,080
are in the whole of Achea.
Grace to you and peace from God

97
00:05:38,080 –> 00:05:40,440
our Father and the Lord Jesus
Christ.

98
00:05:41,480 –> 00:05:44,960
Blessed be the God and Father of
our Lord Jesus Christ, the

99
00:05:44,960 –> 00:05:48,760
Father of mercies, and God of
all comfort, who comforts us in

100
00:05:48,760 –> 00:05:52,960
all our affliction, that we may
be able to comfort those who are

101
00:05:52,960 –> 00:05:56,360
in any affliction through the
comfort with which we ourselves

102
00:05:56,360 –> 00:06:00,160
are comforted by God.
For as the sufferings of Christ

103
00:06:00,160 –> 00:06:03,520
abound to us, Even so our
comfort also abounds through

104
00:06:03,520 –> 00:06:06,320
Christ.
But if we are afflicted, it is

105
00:06:06,320 –> 00:06:10,920
for your comfort and salvation.
If we are comforted, it is for

106
00:06:10,920 –> 00:06:14,360
your comfort, which produces in
you the patient enduring of the

107
00:06:14,360 –> 00:06:16,600
same sufferings which we also
suffer.

108
00:06:17,680 –> 00:06:21,080
Our hope for you is steadfast,
knowing that since you are

109
00:06:21,080 –> 00:06:25,440
partakers of the sufferings, so
you are also of the comfort, for

110
00:06:25,440 –> 00:06:29,080
we don’t desire to have you
uninformed brothers, concerning

111
00:06:29,080 –> 00:06:32,080
our affliction, which happened
to us in Asia, that we were

112
00:06:32,080 –> 00:06:36,360
weighed down exceedingly beyond
our power, so much that we

113
00:06:36,360 –> 00:06:40,320
despaired even of life.
Yes, we ourselves have had the

114
00:06:40,320 –> 00:06:43,080
sentence of death within
ourselves, that we should not

115
00:06:43,080 –> 00:06:46,880
trust in ourselves, but in God,
who raises the dead, who

116
00:06:46,880 –> 00:06:51,560
delivered us out of so great a
death, and does deliver, on whom

117
00:06:51,560 –> 00:06:54,360
we have said our hope that He
will also still deliver us.

118
00:06:54,840 –> 00:06:58,000
You also helping together on our
behalf by your supplication,

119
00:06:58,440 –> 00:07:02,960
that for the gift given to us by
means of Many thanks, may be

120
00:07:02,960 –> 00:07:06,880
given by many persons on your
behalf for our boasting.

121
00:07:06,880 –> 00:07:10,960
Is this the testimony of our
conscience, that in holiness and

122
00:07:10,960 –> 00:07:15,120
sincerity of God, not in fleshly
wisdom, but in the grace of God,

123
00:07:15,120 –> 00:07:18,680
we behaved ourselves in the
world, and more abundantly

124
00:07:18,680 –> 00:07:21,840
towards you.
For we write no other things to

125
00:07:21,840 –> 00:07:25,200
you than what you read or even
acknowledge, and I hope you will

126
00:07:25,200 –> 00:07:28,600
acknowledge to the end, as also
you acknowledged us in part,

127
00:07:28,920 –> 00:07:33,440
that we are your boasting, even
as you also are ours in the day

128
00:07:33,440 –> 00:07:37,160
of our Lord Jesus.
In this confidence I was

129
00:07:37,160 –> 00:07:40,240
determined to come first to you,
that you might have a second

130
00:07:40,240 –> 00:07:44,160
benefit, and by you to pass into
Macedonia, and again from

131
00:07:44,160 –> 00:07:48,640
Macedonia to come to you, and to
be sent forward by you on my

132
00:07:48,640 –> 00:07:51,880
journey to Judea.
When I therefore was thus

133
00:07:51,880 –> 00:07:55,760
determined, did I show
fickleness, or the things that I

134
00:07:55,760 –> 00:07:57,760
purpose?
Do I purpose according to the

135
00:07:57,760 –> 00:08:01,080
flesh, that with me there should
be the yes, yes, and the no?

136
00:08:01,080 –> 00:08:06,240
No, But as God is faithful, our
word toward you is not yes and

137
00:08:06,240 –> 00:08:08,760
no.
For the Son of God, Jesus

138
00:08:08,760 –> 00:08:12,400
Christ, who was preached among
you by us, by me, Sylvanus and

139
00:08:12,400 –> 00:08:16,880
Timothy, was not yes and no, but
in Him is yes.

140
00:08:17,240 –> 00:08:20,200
For however many are the
promises of God, in him is the

141
00:08:20,200 –> 00:08:22,840
yes.
Therefore also through him is

142
00:08:22,840 –> 00:08:25,280
the Amen to the glory of God
through us.

143
00:08:26,280 –> 00:08:29,960
Now He who establishes us with
you in Christ and anointed us is

144
00:08:29,960 –> 00:08:33,880
God who also sealed us and gave
us the down payment of the

145
00:08:33,880 –> 00:08:37,679
Spirit in our hearts.
But I call God for a witness to

146
00:08:37,679 –> 00:08:40,320
my soul that I didn’t come to
Corinth to spare you.

147
00:08:40,880 –> 00:08:43,679
We don’t control your faith, but
our fellow workers with you for

148
00:08:43,679 –> 00:08:46,360
your joy.
For you stand firm in faith.

149
00:08:47,440 –> 00:08:50,360
But I determined this for
myself, that I would not come to

150
00:08:50,360 –> 00:08:53,800
you again in sorrow.
For if I make you grieve, then

151
00:08:53,800 –> 00:08:56,760
who will make me glad but he who
is made to grieve by me?

152
00:08:57,800 –> 00:09:01,480
And I wrote this very thing to
you, so that when I came I

153
00:09:01,480 –> 00:09:04,080
wouldn’t have sorrow from them
of whom I ought to rejoice,

154
00:09:04,520 –> 00:09:07,800
having confidence in you all,
that my joy would be shared by

155
00:09:07,800 –> 00:09:10,880
all of you.
For out of much affliction and

156
00:09:10,880 –> 00:09:14,440
anguish of heart, I wrote to you
with many tears, not that you

157
00:09:14,440 –> 00:09:17,320
should be made to grieve, but
that you might know the love

158
00:09:17,320 –> 00:09:18,960
that I have so abundantly for
you.

159
00:09:20,120 –> 00:09:23,520
But if any has caused sorrow, he
has caused sorrow, not to me,

160
00:09:23,720 –> 00:09:26,440
but in part, that I not press
too heavily to you.

161
00:09:26,480 –> 00:09:30,920
All this punishment which was
inflicted by the many is

162
00:09:30,920 –> 00:09:34,360
sufficient for such a 1.
So that, On the contrary, you

163
00:09:34,360 –> 00:09:38,640
should rather forgive him and
comfort him, lest by any means

164
00:09:38,800 –> 00:09:41,560
such a one should be swallowed
up with his excessive sorrow.

165
00:09:42,640 –> 00:09:45,160
Therefore I beg you to confirm
your love toward Him.

166
00:09:45,720 –> 00:09:48,680
For to this end I also wrote
that I might know the proof of

167
00:09:48,680 –> 00:09:51,280
you, whether you are obedient in
all things.

168
00:09:52,280 –> 00:09:54,960
Now I also forgive whomever you
forgive anything.

169
00:09:56,040 –> 00:09:59,280
For if indeed I have forgiven
anything, I have forgiven that

170
00:09:59,280 –> 00:10:02,280
one for your sakes in the
presence of Christ, that no

171
00:10:02,280 –> 00:10:05,720
advantage may be gained over us
by Satan, for we are not

172
00:10:05,720 –> 00:10:09,680
ignorant of his schemes.
Now when I came to Troas for the

173
00:10:09,680 –> 00:10:12,680
good news of Christ, and when a
door was opened to me in the

174
00:10:12,680 –> 00:10:16,440
Lord, I had no relief for my
spirit, because I didn’t find

175
00:10:16,440 –> 00:10:20,920
Titus my brother, but taking my
leave of them, I went out into

176
00:10:20,920 –> 00:10:25,040
Macedonia.
Now thanks be to God, who always

177
00:10:25,040 –> 00:10:28,640
leads us in triumph in Christ
and reveals through US the sweet

178
00:10:28,640 –> 00:10:30,760
aroma of His knowledge in every
place.

179
00:10:31,800 –> 00:10:35,200
For we are a sweet aroma of
Christ to God in those who are

180
00:10:35,200 –> 00:10:38,960
saved, and in those who perish,
to the 1A stench from death to

181
00:10:38,960 –> 00:10:43,440
death to the other a sweet aroma
from life to life, who is

182
00:10:43,440 –> 00:10:46,560
sufficient for these things.
For we are not as so many

183
00:10:46,600 –> 00:10:50,560
peddling the word of God, but as
of sincerity, but as of God.

184
00:10:50,600 –> 00:10:52,840
In the sight of God we speak in
Christ.
