“The simple believes everything, but the prudent gives thought to his steps.” — Proverbs 14:15 (ESV)

“Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God.” — Psalm 43:5 (ESV)

“And as they were eating, he took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to them, and said, ‘Take; this is my body.’” — Mark 14:22 (ESV)

________________________________________

Have you ever jumped into something too quickly and wished you had slowed down first? Maybe it was believing a rumor, trusting the wrong friend, or making a decision without thinking it through. Proverbs 14:15 reminds us to be careful about what we believe and the choices we make. Life throws so many voices at us—social media, friends, even our own emotions—but not all of them lead to truth.

In Psalm 43, the writer feels discouraged but chooses to put his hope in God instead of his feelings. And in Mark 14, Jesus takes time during His last meal with the disciples to give them something lasting and meaningful—His very presence through communion. All three passages teach us that when life feels confusing, noisy, or heavy, we need to pause, think, and anchor our decisions and emotions in God’s truth.

THINK ABOUT IT

1. Check Before You Believe: How can you make sure the voices or information you listen to line up with God’s wisdom instead of just reacting to everything you hear?

2. Hope in Hard Times: Like the psalmist in Psalm 43:5, how can you remind yourself to hope in God when you feel discouraged or overwhelmed?

3. Remember What Matters: How does focusing on Jesus’ sacrifice, like in Mark 14:22, help you stay grounded when everything else feels uncertain?

________________________________________

BOTTOM LINE

Wise choices and lasting hope come when we slow down, seek God’s truth, and anchor our lives in Him.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, thank You for being my source of truth and hope. Help me to slow down, think carefully, and make choices that honor You. When life feels confusing or discouraging, remind me to place my trust in You and to stay grounded in Your Word. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

00:00:02,440 –> 00:00:05,800
Welcome to Bible Chat where we
have devotional conversations

2
00:00:06,120 –> 00:00:10,960
rooted in scripture and relevant
for today, April 14th.

3
00:00:11,360 –> 00:00:14,760
Think before you leap.
Some mistakes happen because we

4
00:00:14,760 –> 00:00:18,040
move too quickly.
We trust too fast, react too

5
00:00:18,040 –> 00:00:20,800
fast, believe too fast, or speak
too fast.

6
00:00:21,920 –> 00:00:25,840
Proverbs chapter 14 verse 15
says the simple believes

7
00:00:25,840 –> 00:00:28,680
everything, but the prudent
gives thought to his steps.

8
00:00:29,320 –> 00:00:31,920
That is such an important word
for the world we live in.

9
00:00:33,000 –> 00:00:36,760
We are constantly surrounded by
noise, opinions, reactions,

10
00:00:36,800 –> 00:00:40,560
headlines, gossip, and pressure.
Everything tells us to respond

11
00:00:40,560 –> 00:00:44,080
immediately, but wisdom often
sounds like slowing down.

12
00:00:45,200 –> 00:00:49,160
The writer of Psalm 43 verse 5
says why are you cast down?

13
00:00:49,160 –> 00:00:52,720
Oh my soul, hope in God.
That tells us something else

14
00:00:52,720 –> 00:00:55,080
important.
Not every emotion should be

15
00:00:55,080 –> 00:00:58,440
obeyed.
Feelings are real, but they are

16
00:00:58,440 –> 00:01:02,200
not always reliable guides.
Sometimes the wisest thing you

17
00:01:02,200 –> 00:01:05,280
can do is pause long enough to
let truth speak louder than

18
00:01:05,280 –> 00:01:08,600
emotion.
Then in Mark chapter 14 verse

19
00:01:08,600 –> 00:01:12,920
22, Jesus shares bread with his
disciples and says, take, This

20
00:01:12,920 –> 00:01:15,440
is my body.
In the middle of betrayal,

21
00:01:15,440 –> 00:01:19,600
confusion, and coming sorrow,
Jesus gives them something

22
00:01:19,600 –> 00:01:24,280
steady and sacred to hold onto.
He anchors them in himself.

23
00:01:24,720 –> 00:01:28,080
That is what we need too.
In a noisy and impulsive world,

24
00:01:28,080 –> 00:01:30,680
Jesus is our center.
He keeps us grounded.

25
00:01:31,080 –> 00:01:33,840
Thinking before you leap is not
fear, it is wisdom.

26
00:01:35,000 –> 00:01:37,560
It means asking, Is this true?
Is this loving?

27
00:01:37,560 –> 00:01:39,720
Is this necessary?
Is this from God?

28
00:01:40,840 –> 00:01:44,080
It means not letting a rumor
become your belief, a mood

29
00:01:44,080 –> 00:01:47,200
become your direction, or a
moment become a decision you

30
00:01:47,200 –> 00:01:49,960
regret later.
Maybe you are facing something

31
00:01:49,960 –> 00:01:54,520
right now that tempts you to
rush a response, a relationship,

32
00:01:54,600 –> 00:01:58,280
a choice, a strong emotion.
Pause and bring it before God.

33
00:01:58,440 –> 00:02:01,800
Wisdom is not weakness.
Reflection is not hesitation.

34
00:02:02,840 –> 00:02:05,960
Sometimes the most spiritual
thing you can do is slow down

35
00:02:05,960 –> 00:02:09,280
enough to hear the Lord clearly.
When your heart feels noisy,

36
00:02:09,479 –> 00:02:12,920
stay close to Jesus.
His truth gives you solid ground

37
00:02:12,920 –> 00:02:15,520
under your feet.
Let’s pray.

38
00:02:15,760 –> 00:02:18,640
Heavenly Father, thank you for
being my source of truth and

39
00:02:18,640 –> 00:02:21,200
stability.
Help me slow down when I am

40
00:02:21,200 –> 00:02:25,360
tempted to react without wisdom.
Teach me to think carefully,

41
00:02:25,600 –> 00:02:28,320
test what I hear, and let Your
Word guide my steps.

42
00:02:29,360 –> 00:02:32,800
When my emotions feel strong and
life feels noisy, anchor me in

43
00:02:32,880 –> 00:02:36,560
Jesus and fill me with peace,
discernment and self-control in

44
00:02:36,640 –> 00:02:43,480
Jesus name, Amen.
What if you could rise up and

45
00:02:43,480 –> 00:02:47,360
declare with full spiritual
authority, I shall not die, but

46
00:02:47,360 –> 00:02:49,960
live?

Proverbs Chapter 14 Verse 15
World English Bible A simple man

66
00:03:51,080 –> 00:03:54,040
believes everything, but the
prudent man carefully considers

67
00:03:54,040 –> 00:03:57,880
his ways.
Psalm Chapter 43 World English

68
00:03:57,880 –> 00:04:02,200
Bible Vindicate me God, and
plead my cause against an

69
00:04:02,200 –> 00:04:05,480
ungodly nation.
O deliver me from deceitful and

70
00:04:05,480 –> 00:04:08,080
wicked men, for you are the God
of my strength.

71
00:04:08,480 –> 00:04:11,800
Why have you rejected me?
Why do I go mourning?

72
00:04:11,800 –> 00:04:13,400
Because of the oppression of the
enemy.

73
00:04:13,840 –> 00:04:15,760
Oh, send out your light and your
truth.

74
00:04:16,079 –> 00:04:18,519
Let them lead me.
Let them bring me to your holy

75
00:04:18,519 –> 00:04:21,920
hill, to your tents.
Then I will go to the altar of

76
00:04:21,920 –> 00:04:24,680
God.
To God, my exceeding joy, I will

77
00:04:24,680 –> 00:04:27,440
praise you on the harp.
God, my God, why are you in

78
00:04:27,440 –> 00:04:29,480
despair?
My soul, why are you disturbed

79
00:04:29,480 –> 00:04:32,960
within me?
Hope in God, for I shall still

80
00:04:32,960 –> 00:04:35,600
praise him, my Savior, my
helper, and my God.

81
00:04:35,920 –> 00:04:40,320
Mark chapter 14.
World English Bible It was now

82
00:04:40,320 –> 00:04:43,600
two days before the Passover and
the Feast of Unleavened Bread,

83
00:04:44,080 –> 00:04:47,000
and the chief priests and the
scribes sought how they might

84
00:04:47,000 –> 00:04:51,440
seize him by deception and kill
him, for they said not during

85
00:04:51,440 –> 00:04:54,200
the feast, because there might
be a riot among the people.

86
00:04:54,840 –> 00:04:58,240
While he was at Bethany, in the
House of Simon the Leper, as he

87
00:04:58,240 –> 00:05:02,360
sat at the table, a woman came
having an alabaster jar of

88
00:05:02,360 –> 00:05:04,880
ointment of pure nard, very
costly.

89
00:05:05,920 –> 00:05:08,200
She broke the jar and poured it
over his head.

90
00:05:08,760 –> 00:05:11,280
But there were some who were
indignant among themselves,

91
00:05:11,440 –> 00:05:14,160
saying, Why has this ointment
been wasted?

92
00:05:15,240 –> 00:05:18,240
For this might have been sold
for more than 300 denarii and

93
00:05:18,240 –> 00:05:21,120
given to the poor.
So they grumbled against her,

94
00:05:21,400 –> 00:05:24,760
but Jesus said, Leave her alone.
Why do you trouble her?

95
00:05:25,760 –> 00:05:28,840
She has done a good work for me.
For you always have the poor

96
00:05:28,840 –> 00:05:32,200
with you, and whenever you want
to you can do them good, but you

97
00:05:32,200 –> 00:05:35,240
will not always have me.
She has done what she could.

98
00:05:36,280 –> 00:05:38,880
She has anointed my body
beforehand for the burying.

99
00:05:40,000 –> 00:05:43,080
Most certainly, I tell you,
wherever this good news may be

100
00:05:43,080 –> 00:05:45,880
preached throughout the whole
world, that which this woman has

101
00:05:45,880 –> 00:05:48,600
done will also be spoken of for
a memorial of her.

102
00:05:49,240 –> 00:05:53,640
Judas Iscariot, who was one of
the 12, went away to the chief

103
00:05:53,640 –> 00:05:55,920
priests that he might deliver
him to them.

104
00:05:57,080 –> 00:06:00,040
They, when they heard it, were
glad and promised to give him

105
00:06:00,040 –> 00:06:01,840
money.
He sought how he might

106
00:06:01,840 –> 00:06:06,240
conveniently deliver him on the
first day of unleavened bread

107
00:06:06,560 –> 00:06:08,320
when they sacrificed the
Passover.

108
00:06:08,480 –> 00:06:12,800
His disciples asked him, Where
do you want us to go and prepare

109
00:06:12,800 –> 00:06:16,480
that you may eat the Passover.
He sent two of his disciples and

110
00:06:16,480 –> 00:06:19,840
said to them, go into the city
and they’re a man carrying a

111
00:06:19,840 –> 00:06:23,720
pitcher of water will meet you.
Follow him and wherever he

112
00:06:23,720 –> 00:06:25,680
enters in, tell the master of
the house.

113
00:06:26,000 –> 00:06:30,000
The teacher says, Where is the
guest room where I may eat the

114
00:06:30,000 –> 00:06:33,680
Passover with my disciples?
He will himself show you a large

115
00:06:33,680 –> 00:06:37,640
upper room, furnished and ready.
Get ready for us there.

116
00:06:38,120 –> 00:06:41,480
His disciples went out and came
into the city, and found things

117
00:06:41,480 –> 00:06:44,160
as he had said to them, and they
prepared the Passover.

118
00:06:44,600 –> 00:06:46,560
When it was evening He came with
the 12.

119
00:06:47,720 –> 00:06:50,640
As they sat and were eating,
Jesus said, Most certainly I

120
00:06:50,640 –> 00:06:53,640
tell you, one of you will betray
me, he who eats with me.

121
00:06:54,240 –> 00:06:57,120
They began to be sorrowful, and
to ask Him 1 by 1.

122
00:06:58,160 –> 00:07:01,040
Surely not I, And another said,
Surely not I.

123
00:07:01,280 –> 00:07:03,360
He answered them, It is one of
the 12.

124
00:07:03,360 –> 00:07:07,640
He who dips with me in the dish.
For the Son of Man goes as it is

125
00:07:07,640 –> 00:07:10,520
written about him.
But woe to that man by whom the

126
00:07:10,520 –> 00:07:14,360
Son of Man is betrayed.
It would be better for that man

127
00:07:14,360 –> 00:07:17,840
if he had not been born.
As they were eating, Jesus took

128
00:07:17,840 –> 00:07:20,640
bread, and when He had blessed
it, He broke it and gave to

129
00:07:20,640 –> 00:07:24,480
them, and said, Take, eat, this
is my body.

130
00:07:24,960 –> 00:07:27,720
He took the cup, and when He had
given thanks, He gave to them.

131
00:07:28,120 –> 00:07:30,960
They all drank of it.
He said to them, This is my

132
00:07:30,960 –> 00:07:33,560
blood of the new covenant which
is poured out for many.

133
00:07:34,640 –> 00:07:37,640
Most certainly I tell you, I
will no more drink of the fruit

134
00:07:37,640 –> 00:07:40,400
of the vine until that day when
I drink it anew in God’s

135
00:07:40,400 –> 00:07:43,120
Kingdom.
When they had sung A hymn, they

136
00:07:43,120 –> 00:07:47,440
went out to the Mount of Olives.
Jesus said to them, All of you

137
00:07:47,440 –> 00:07:49,440
will be made to stumble because
of me tonight.

138
00:07:49,440 –> 00:07:52,520
For it is written, I will strike
the shepherd, and the sheep will

139
00:07:52,520 –> 00:07:56,720
be scattered.
However, after I am raised up, I

140
00:07:56,720 –> 00:08:00,480
will go before you into Galilee.
But Peter said to him, although

141
00:08:00,480 –> 00:08:02,440
all will be offended, yet I will
not.

142
00:08:03,040 –> 00:08:05,720
Jesus said to him, most
certainly I tell you that you

143
00:08:05,720 –> 00:08:09,920
today, even this night, before
the rooster crows twice, you

144
00:08:09,920 –> 00:08:13,000
will deny me three times.
But he spoke all the more.

145
00:08:13,080 –> 00:08:15,200
If I must die with you, I will
not deny you.

146
00:08:15,800 –> 00:08:19,480
They all said the same thing.
They came to a place which was

147
00:08:19,480 –> 00:08:22,520
named Gethsemane.
He said to his disciples, Sit

148
00:08:22,520 –> 00:08:25,960
here while I pray.
He took with him Peter, James,

149
00:08:25,960 –> 00:08:29,000
and John and began to be greatly
troubled and distressed.

150
00:08:30,040 –> 00:08:33,360
He said to them, My soul is
exceedingly sorrowful even to

151
00:08:33,360 –> 00:08:37,799
death, Stay here and watch.
He went forward a little and

152
00:08:37,799 –> 00:08:40,400
fell on the ground and prayed
that if it were possible, the

153
00:08:40,400 –> 00:08:44,200
hour might pass away from him.
He said, ABBA, Father, all

154
00:08:44,200 –> 00:08:48,160
things are possible to you.
Please remove this cup from me,

155
00:08:48,320 –> 00:08:50,880
however not what I desire, but
what you desire.

156
00:08:51,520 –> 00:08:54,560
He came and found them sleeping
and said to Peter, Simon, are

157
00:08:54,560 –> 00:08:56,760
you sleeping?
Couldn’t you watch one hour?

158
00:08:57,840 –> 00:09:00,840
Watch and pray that you may not
enter into temptation.

159
00:09:01,120 –> 00:09:03,760
The Spirit indeed is willing,
but the flesh is weak.

160
00:09:04,320 –> 00:09:08,760
Again he went away and prayed,
saying the same words again.

161
00:09:08,760 –> 00:09:11,320
He returned and found them
sleeping, for their eyes were

162
00:09:11,320 –> 00:09:13,880
very heavy and they didn’t know
what to answer him.

163
00:09:14,440 –> 00:09:17,720
He came the third time and said
to them, Sleep on now and take

164
00:09:17,720 –> 00:09:21,120
your rest, it is enough.
The hour has come.

165
00:09:21,520 –> 00:09:23,920
Behold, the Son of Man is
betrayed into the hands of

166
00:09:23,920 –> 00:09:26,280
sinners.
Arise, let’s get going.

167
00:09:27,400 –> 00:09:29,320
Behold, he who betrays me is at
hand.

168
00:09:29,920 –> 00:09:33,240
Immediately, while he was still
speaking, Judas, one of the 12

169
00:09:33,240 –> 00:09:36,560
came, and with him a multitude
with swords and clubs from the

170
00:09:36,560 –> 00:09:40,040
chief priests, the scribes, and
the elders.

171
00:09:41,080 –> 00:09:43,720
Now he who betrayed him had
given them a sign saying,

172
00:09:43,920 –> 00:09:46,520
Whomever I will kiss.
That is, he sees him and lead

173
00:09:46,520 –> 00:09:49,760
him away safely.
When he had come, immediately he

174
00:09:49,760 –> 00:09:53,880
came to him and said, Rabbi,
rabbi, and kissed him.

175
00:09:54,360 –> 00:09:56,200
They laid their hands on him and
seized him.

176
00:09:56,720 –> 00:09:59,440
But a certain one of those who
stood by drew his sword and

177
00:09:59,440 –> 00:10:02,480
struck the servant of the high
priest and cut off his ear.

178
00:10:03,680 –> 00:10:07,000
Jesus answered them, Have you
come out as against a robber

179
00:10:07,000 –> 00:10:08,760
with swords and clubs to seize
me?

180
00:10:09,280 –> 00:10:12,080
I was daily with you in the
Temple teaching, and you didn’t

181
00:10:12,080 –> 00:10:14,720
arrest me.
But this is so that the

182
00:10:14,720 –> 00:10:18,440
Scriptures might be fulfilled.
They all left him and fled.

183
00:10:18,920 –> 00:10:22,200
A certain young man followed
him, having a linen cloth thrown

184
00:10:22,200 –> 00:10:24,080
around himself over his naked
body.

185
00:10:25,160 –> 00:10:28,200
The young men grabbed him, but
he left the linen cloth and fled

186
00:10:28,200 –> 00:10:31,160
from them naked.
They led Jesus away to the high

187
00:10:31,160 –> 00:10:33,560
priest.
All the chief priests, the

188
00:10:33,560 –> 00:10:35,800
elders and the scribes came
together with him.

189
00:10:36,920 –> 00:10:40,000
Peter had followed him from a
distance until he came into the

190
00:10:40,000 –> 00:10:43,280
court of the high priest.
He was sitting with the officers

191
00:10:43,360 –> 00:10:45,480
and warming himself in the light
of the fire.

192
00:10:46,560 –> 00:10:49,720
Now the chief priests and the
whole council sought witnesses

193
00:10:49,720 –> 00:10:52,600
against Jesus to put him to
death, and found none.

194
00:10:53,680 –> 00:10:57,320
For many gave false testimony
against him, and their testimony

195
00:10:57,320 –> 00:11:01,040
didn’t agree with each other.
Some stood up and gave false

196
00:11:01,040 –> 00:11:05,320
testimony against him, saying,
we heard him say, I will destroy

197
00:11:05,320 –> 00:11:09,320
this temple that is made with
hands, and in three days I will

198
00:11:09,320 –> 00:11:11,000
build another made without
hands.

199
00:11:11,520 –> 00:11:13,760
Even so, their testimony didn’t
agree.

200
00:11:14,880 –> 00:11:18,120
The high priest stood up in the
middle and asked Jesus, have you

201
00:11:18,120 –> 00:11:20,480
no answer?
What is it which these testify

202
00:11:20,480 –> 00:11:23,240
against you?
But he stayed quiet and answered

203
00:11:23,240 –> 00:11:26,160
nothing.
Again the high priest asked him,

204
00:11:26,400 –> 00:11:28,720
Are you the Christ?
The Son of the blessed Jesus

205
00:11:28,720 –> 00:11:32,080
said, I am.
You will see the Son of man

206
00:11:32,080 –> 00:11:35,000
sitting at the right hand of
power and coming with the clouds

207
00:11:35,000 –> 00:11:37,880
of the sky.
The high priest tore his clothes

208
00:11:37,880 –> 00:11:40,640
and said, What further need have
we have witnesses?

209
00:11:41,720 –> 00:11:43,800
You have heard the blasphemy.
What do you think?

210
00:11:44,160 –> 00:11:46,160
They all condemned him to be
worthy of death.

211
00:11:47,280 –> 00:11:50,720
Some began to spit on him and to
cover his face, and to beat him

212
00:11:50,720 –> 00:11:53,000
with fists, and to tell him
prophecy.

213
00:11:53,520 –> 00:11:55,960
The officers struck him with the
palms of their hands.

214
00:11:57,040 –> 00:12:00,160
As Peter was in the courtyard
below, one of the maids of the

215
00:12:00,160 –> 00:12:03,600
high priest came, and seeing
Peter warming himself, she

216
00:12:03,600 –> 00:12:08,280
looked at him and said, You were
also with the Nazarene Jesus.

217
00:12:08,280 –> 00:12:11,200
But he denied it, saying, I
neither know nor understand what

218
00:12:11,200 –> 00:12:13,800
you are saying.
He went out on the porch and the

219
00:12:13,800 –> 00:12:17,480
rooster crowed.
The maid saw him and began again

220
00:12:17,480 –> 00:12:20,120
to tell those who stood by.
This is one of them.

221
00:12:20,640 –> 00:12:24,080
But he again denied it.
After a little while, again

222
00:12:24,080 –> 00:12:27,000
those who stood by said to
Peter, You truly are one of

223
00:12:27,000 –> 00:12:29,840
them, for you are a Galilean,
and your speech shows it.

224
00:12:30,440 –> 00:12:34,400
But he began to curse and to
swear, I don’t know this man of

225
00:12:34,400 –> 00:12:36,800
whom you speak.
The rooster crowed the second

226
00:12:36,800 –> 00:12:39,840
time.
Peter remembered the words that

227
00:12:39,840 –> 00:12:42,800
Jesus said to him before.
The rooster crows twice.

228
00:12:42,880 –> 00:12:46,400
You will deny me three times.
When he thought about that, he

229
00:12:46,400 –> 00:12:50,400
wept.
