“If you have struck a pledge with your neighbor, have given your pledge for a stranger… save yourself, for you have come into the hand of your neighbor.” —Proverbs 6:1–3
“The Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble.” —Psalm 9:9
“He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, ‘This is my beloved Son… listen to him.’” —Matthew 17:5

Have you ever said “yes” to something too quickly—maybe a challenge, a favor, or a dare—only to instantly regret it? Proverbs 6 starts with a warning about making unwise promises, especially when we don’t think them through. It’s like God is saying, “Be careful what you sign up for.” Why? Because choices carry consequences, and hasty ones can trap us. The psalmist reminds us that when we do mess up, God is still our safe place. And in Matthew 17, during Jesus’ transfiguration, God Himself says, “Listen to Him.” That’s huge. It tells us where to focus when we’re unsure what to do—don’t just go with your feelings or friends’ opinions. Listen to Jesus.
Life throws a lot at us—peer pressure, quick decisions, and sometimes, big regrets. But God’s Word calls us to be wise, slow down, and lean in to what Jesus is saying. When we listen to Him, we learn to move differently—more wisely, more confidently, and more in tune with His heart.

THINK ABOUT IT
1. Think Before You Promise: Are you quick to say “yes” to things without praying or thinking about them first? What decisions have you made lately that you wish you had slowed down on?
2. God is Your Safe Place: Psalm 9 says God is a stronghold. Where do you run when you feel trapped, pressured, or overwhelmed? Do you believe God is a safe place for you?
3. Listen to Jesus: In Matthew 17:5, God literally says to listen to Jesus. What does it practically look like in your daily life to “listen to Him”? Are you letting His Word guide your actions?

BOTTOM LINE
Wisdom means learning to slow down, think carefully, and always tune in to what Jesus is saying.

PRAYER
Heavenly Father, I admit I’ve made quick choices without always thinking them through. Help me grow in wisdom and listen for Your voice above all others. Thank You for being my stronghold when I mess up or feel trapped. Teach me to walk closely with Jesus and make decisions that honor You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
00:00:02,440 –> 00:00:05,800
Welcome to Bible Chat, where we
have devotional conversations
2
00:00:06,120 –> 00:00:11,080
rooted in Scripture and relevant
for today, January 20th.
3
00:00:11,280 –> 00:00:13,640
Watch your steps.
Have you ever agreed to
4
00:00:13,640 –> 00:00:15,800
something in the moment and
instantly wished you could
5
00:00:15,800 –> 00:00:18,320
rewind?
Maybe you said yes because
6
00:00:18,320 –> 00:00:21,040
everyone was watching, or you
didn’t want to disappoint
7
00:00:21,040 –> 00:00:23,880
someone, or you just didn’t want
to think too hard about it.
8
00:00:24,240 –> 00:00:27,520
At first, it felt harmless.
Later, it felt heavy.
9
00:00:28,000 –> 00:00:30,840
Life has a way of teaching us
that quick decisions can come
10
00:00:30,840 –> 00:00:34,560
with long consequences.
Proverbs chapter 6, verses one
11
00:00:34,560 –> 00:00:36,600
to three, speaks straight into
that reality.
12
00:00:37,080 –> 00:00:40,400
It warns about making careless
commitments and getting tangled
13
00:00:40,400 –> 00:00:42,560
up in promises you didn’t fully
think through.
14
00:00:43,200 –> 00:00:45,840
The message is clear.
Pay attention to where your
15
00:00:45,840 –> 00:00:48,800
steps are taking you.
God isn’t trying to scare you.
16
00:00:48,960 –> 00:00:52,320
He’s trying to protect you.
He knows how easily pressure
17
00:00:52,440 –> 00:00:55,240
people pleasing or fear of
missing out can trap us.
18
00:00:55,600 –> 00:00:59,360
Wisdom often sounds like slowing
down, asking better questions,
19
00:00:59,640 –> 00:01:03,040
and refusing to rush into things
just because everyone else is.
20
00:01:03,600 –> 00:01:05,880
But what if you already stepped
into something you regret?
21
00:01:06,360 –> 00:01:08,320
That’s where Psalm 9 brings
comfort.
22
00:01:08,680 –> 00:01:12,080
Verse 9 says the Lord is a
stronghold for the oppressed, a
23
00:01:12,080 –> 00:01:15,760
stronghold in times of trouble.
God doesn’t abandoned you when
24
00:01:15,760 –> 00:01:18,720
you make a mistake.
He becomes your refuge when you
25
00:01:18,720 –> 00:01:22,240
feel trapped by a bad decision,
overwhelmed by pressure, or
26
00:01:22,240 –> 00:01:24,520
unsure how to untangle what
you’ve gotten into.
27
00:01:24,720 –> 00:01:27,240
God is not standing far away
shaking his head.
28
00:01:27,720 –> 00:01:30,160
He is close.
He is a safe place.
29
00:01:30,480 –> 00:01:32,800
He is strong enough to help you
find a way forward.
30
00:01:33,320 –> 00:01:36,840
Then Matthew chapter 17 brings
everything into focus.
31
00:01:37,320 –> 00:01:40,600
Jesus is transfigured on the
mountain and God speaks audibly
32
00:01:40,600 –> 00:01:43,960
from a bright cloud saying, This
is my beloved son, listen to
33
00:01:43,960 –> 00:01:46,640
him.
Out of all the voices competing
34
00:01:46,640 –> 00:01:49,600
for your attention, friends,
culture, emotions, fear,
35
00:01:49,600 –> 00:01:52,840
expectations.
God points to 1 and says, listen
36
00:01:52,840 –> 00:01:55,240
to him.
Not listen to the noise, not
37
00:01:55,240 –> 00:01:57,600
listen to the pressure, listen
to Jesus.
38
00:01:57,960 –> 00:02:01,080
Watching your steps doesn’t mean
living scared or overthinking
39
00:02:01,080 –> 00:02:03,720
everything.
It means learning to pause.
40
00:02:04,080 –> 00:02:07,120
It means inviting God into your
decisions before you commit
41
00:02:07,120 –> 00:02:10,560
instead of after you regret.
It means letting Jesus shape how
42
00:02:10,560 –> 00:02:13,600
you respond when you’re rushed,
tempted, or unsure.
43
00:02:14,160 –> 00:02:16,560
Wisdom grows when we slow down
enough to hear Him.
44
00:02:17,040 –> 00:02:19,880
You don’t have to get every
decision right to walk with God,
45
00:02:20,240 –> 00:02:22,240
but you do have to stay willing
to listen.
46
00:02:22,600 –> 00:02:25,040
When you tune your heart to
Jesus, your steps become
47
00:02:25,040 –> 00:02:27,640
steadier.
And even when you stumble, God
48
00:02:27,640 –> 00:02:29,960
remains your stronghold.
Let’s pray.
49
00:02:30,320 –> 00:02:33,480
Heavenly Father, thank you for
caring about the choices I make
50
00:02:33,640 –> 00:02:37,080
and the direction of my life.
Help me slow down and think
51
00:02:37,080 –> 00:02:39,160
wisely before I commit myself to
things.
52
00:02:39,680 –> 00:02:43,000
Teach me to listen to Jesus
above every other voice, and
53
00:02:43,000 –> 00:02:46,480
when I feel trapped, overwhelmed
or unsure, remind me that you
54
00:02:46,480 –> 00:02:48,440
are my stronghold and my safe
place.
55
00:02:48,920 –> 00:02:52,880
Guide my steps and lead me in
your wisdom in Jesus name, Amen.
56
00:02:53,840 –> 00:02:56,920
What if the ache you feel for
more is actually God calling you
57
00:02:56,920 –> 00:02:59,560
deeper?

Bible reading plan.
Proverbs chapter 6 verses one to
81
00:04:17,160 –> 00:04:21,279
five World English Bible.
My son, if you have become
82
00:04:21,279 –> 00:04:23,880
collateral for your neighbor, if
you have struck your hands and
83
00:04:23,880 –> 00:04:26,560
pledge for a stranger, you are
trapped by the words of your
84
00:04:26,560 –> 00:04:28,760
mouth.
You are ensnared with the words
85
00:04:28,760 –> 00:04:31,600
of your mouth.
Do this now, my son, and deliver
86
00:04:31,600 –> 00:04:33,080
yourself.
Since you have come into the
87
00:04:33,080 –> 00:04:35,760
hand of your neighbor, go humble
yourself.
88
00:04:36,080 –> 00:04:37,360
Press your plea with your
neighbor.
89
00:04:37,680 –> 00:04:40,640
Give no sleep to your eyes, nor
slumber to your eyelids.
90
00:04:41,000 –> 00:04:43,600
Free yourself like a gazelle
from the hand of the hunter,
91
00:04:43,600 –> 00:04:45,600
like a bird from the snare of
the Fowler.
92
00:04:46,080 –> 00:04:50,760
Psalm Chapter 9 World English
Bible for the chief musician set
93
00:04:50,760 –> 00:04:54,880
to the death of the sun, A Psalm
by David I will give thanks to
94
00:04:54,880 –> 00:04:57,680
Yahweh with my whole heart.
I will tell of all your
95
00:04:57,680 –> 00:05:00,320
marvelous works.
I will be glad and rejoice in
96
00:05:00,320 –> 00:05:02,480
you.
I will sing praise to your name
97
00:05:02,480 –> 00:05:05,360
almost high.
When my enemies turn back, they
98
00:05:05,360 –> 00:05:07,160
stumble and perish in your
presence.
99
00:05:07,480 –> 00:05:10,520
For you have maintained my just
’cause you sit on the throne,
100
00:05:10,520 –> 00:05:13,280
judging righteously.
You have rebuked the nations.
101
00:05:13,560 –> 00:05:16,600
You have destroyed the wicked.
You have blotted out their name
102
00:05:16,600 –> 00:05:19,520
forever and ever.
The enemy is overtaken by
103
00:05:19,520 –> 00:05:22,320
endless ruin.
The very memory of the cities
104
00:05:22,320 –> 00:05:24,200
which you have overthrown has
perished.
105
00:05:24,680 –> 00:05:27,840
But Yahweh reigns forever.
He has prepared His throne for
106
00:05:27,840 –> 00:05:30,120
judgment.
He will judge the world in
107
00:05:30,120 –> 00:05:32,640
righteousness.
He will administer judgment to
108
00:05:32,640 –> 00:05:36,200
the peoples in uprightness.
Yahweh will also be a high tower
109
00:05:36,200 –> 00:05:39,160
for the oppressed, a high tower
in times of trouble.
110
00:05:39,680 –> 00:05:42,400
Those who know Your name will
put their trust in you, for you
111
00:05:42,520 –> 00:05:44,960
Yahweh, have not forsaken those
who seek You.
112
00:05:45,360 –> 00:05:48,880
Sing praises to Yahweh who
dwells in Zion and declare among
113
00:05:48,880 –> 00:05:52,400
the people what He has done, for
he who Avengers blood remembers
114
00:05:52,400 –> 00:05:54,520
them.
He doesn’t forget the cry of the
115
00:05:54,520 –> 00:05:57,720
afflicted.
Have mercy on me, Yahweh, See my
116
00:05:57,720 –> 00:06:00,920
affliction by those who hate me,
and lift me up from the gates of
117
00:06:00,920 –> 00:06:03,400
death, that I may show all of
Your praise.
118
00:06:03,920 –> 00:06:06,680
I will rejoice in Your salvation
in the gates of the daughter of
119
00:06:06,680 –> 00:06:09,320
Zion.
The nations have sunk down in
120
00:06:09,320 –> 00:06:11,760
the pit that they made in the
net which they hid.
121
00:06:11,760 –> 00:06:15,040
Their own foot is taken.
Yahweh has made Himself known.
122
00:06:15,120 –> 00:06:18,480
He has executed judgment.
The wicked is snared by the work
123
00:06:18,480 –> 00:06:20,680
of His own hands.
Meditation.
124
00:06:20,800 –> 00:06:23,000
Selah.
The wicked shall be turned back
125
00:06:23,000 –> 00:06:25,360
to Sheol.
Even all the nations that forget
126
00:06:25,360 –> 00:06:27,680
God.
For the needy shall not always
127
00:06:27,680 –> 00:06:30,480
be forgotten, nor the hope of
the poor perish forever.
128
00:06:31,000 –> 00:06:33,440
Arise, Yahweh, don’t let man
prevail.
129
00:06:33,760 –> 00:06:35,560
Let the nations be judged in
your sight.
130
00:06:35,920 –> 00:06:38,640
Put them in fear.
Yahweh let the nations know that
131
00:06:38,640 –> 00:06:40,720
they are only men.
Selah.
132
00:06:40,840 –> 00:06:46,200
Matthew Chapter 17 World English
Bible After six days, Jesus took
133
00:06:46,200 –> 00:06:49,360
with him Peter, James and John
his brother, and brought them up
134
00:06:49,360 –> 00:06:51,160
into a high mountain by
themselves.
135
00:06:51,520 –> 00:06:55,120
He was changed before them.
His face shone like the sun, and
136
00:06:55,120 –> 00:06:57,240
his garments became as white as
the light.
137
00:06:57,720 –> 00:07:00,480
Behold, Moses and Elijah
appeared to them, talking with
138
00:07:00,480 –> 00:07:02,520
him.
Peter answered and said to
139
00:07:02,520 –> 00:07:05,360
Jesus, Lord, it is good for us
to be here.
140
00:07:05,680 –> 00:07:09,160
If you want, let’s make 3 tents
here, one for you, one for
141
00:07:09,160 –> 00:07:12,440
Moses, and 1:00 for Elijah.
While he was still speaking,
142
00:07:12,440 –> 00:07:14,760
behold, a bright cloud
overshadowed them.
143
00:07:15,080 –> 00:07:18,840
Behold, a voice came out of the
cloud saying, This is my beloved
144
00:07:18,840 –> 00:07:21,760
son in whom I am well pleased,
Listen to him.
145
00:07:22,200 –> 00:07:24,640
When the disciples heard it,
they fell on their faces and
146
00:07:24,640 –> 00:07:27,480
were very afraid.
Jesus came and touched them and
147
00:07:27,480 –> 00:07:29,360
said, get up and don’t be
afraid.
148
00:07:29,880 –> 00:07:33,280
Lifting up their eyes, they saw
no one except Jesus alone.
149
00:07:33,680 –> 00:07:35,360
As they were coming down from
the mountain.
150
00:07:35,560 –> 00:07:38,640
Jesus commanded them, saying,
Don’t tell anyone what you saw
151
00:07:38,760 –> 00:07:40,880
until the Son of Man has risen
from the dead.
152
00:07:41,480 –> 00:07:45,040
His disciples asked him, saying,
Then why do the scribes say that
153
00:07:45,040 –> 00:07:48,640
Elijah must come first?
Jesus answered them, Elijah
154
00:07:48,640 –> 00:07:51,400
indeed comes first and will
restore all things.
155
00:07:51,720 –> 00:07:54,560
But I tell you that Elijah has
come already, and they didn’t
156
00:07:54,560 –> 00:07:58,000
recognize him, but did to him
whatever they wanted to.
157
00:07:58,360 –> 00:08:00,920
Even so, the Son of Man will
also suffer by them.
158
00:08:01,640 –> 00:08:04,360
Then the disciples understood
that he spoke to them of John
159
00:08:04,360 –> 00:08:07,160
the Baptizer.
When they came to the multitude,
160
00:08:07,320 –> 00:08:11,520
a man came to him, kneeling down
to him and saying, Lord, have
161
00:08:11,520 –> 00:08:14,520
mercy on my son, for he is
epileptic and suffers
162
00:08:14,520 –> 00:08:17,960
grievously, for he often falls
into the fire and often into the
163
00:08:17,960 –> 00:08:19,720
water.
So I brought him to your
164
00:08:19,720 –> 00:08:21,640
disciples, and they could not
cure him.
165
00:08:22,280 –> 00:08:26,000
Jesus answered, Faithless and
perverse generation, how long
166
00:08:26,000 –> 00:08:28,400
will I be with you?
How long will I bear with you?
167
00:08:28,720 –> 00:08:32,039
Bring him here to me.
Jesus rebuked the demon and it
168
00:08:32,039 –> 00:08:34,559
went out of him, and the boy was
cured from that hour.
169
00:08:35,000 –> 00:08:38,520
Then the disciples came to Jesus
privately and said, why weren’t
170
00:08:38,520 –> 00:08:41,320
we able to cast it out?
He said to them, because of your
171
00:08:41,320 –> 00:08:43,600
unbelief.
For most certainly I tell you,
172
00:08:43,880 –> 00:08:46,880
if you have faith as a grain of
mustard seed, you will tell this
173
00:08:46,880 –> 00:08:49,480
mountain.
Move from here to there and it
174
00:08:49,480 –> 00:08:52,200
will move and nothing will be
impossible for you.
175
00:08:52,640 –> 00:08:55,720
But this kind doesn’t go out
except by prayer and fasting.
176
00:08:56,240 –> 00:08:59,480
While they were staying in
Galilee, Jesus said to them, the
177
00:08:59,480 –> 00:09:02,120
Son of Man is about to be
delivered up into the hands of
178
00:09:02,120 –> 00:09:05,520
men, and they will kill him, and
the third day he will be raised
179
00:09:05,520 –> 00:09:07,840
up.
They were exceedingly sorry.
180
00:09:08,160 –> 00:09:10,520
When they had come to Capernaum,
those who collected the
181
00:09:10,520 –> 00:09:13,760
Didrachma coins came to Peter
and said, Doesn’t your teacher
182
00:09:13,760 –> 00:09:15,960
pay the Didrachma?
He said yes.
183
00:09:16,440 –> 00:09:19,680
When he came into the house,
Jesus anticipated him saying,
184
00:09:19,920 –> 00:09:22,600
What do you think, Simon?
From whom do the kings of the
185
00:09:22,600 –> 00:09:25,920
earth receive toll or tribute
from their children or from
186
00:09:25,920 –> 00:09:28,320
strangers?
Peter said to him from
187
00:09:28,320 –> 00:09:31,400
strangers.
Jesus said to him, therefore the
188
00:09:31,400 –> 00:09:34,000
children are exempt.
But lest we cause them to
189
00:09:34,000 –> 00:09:37,640
stumble, go to the sea, cast a
hook and take up the first fish
190
00:09:37,640 –> 00:09:40,040
that comes up.
When you have opened its mouth,
191
00:09:40,080 –> 00:09:43,400
you will find a stater coin.
Take that and give it to them
192
00:09:43,400 –> 00:09:47,560
for me and you.
