JANUARY 22 – Don’t Play the Fool
3-Year-Bible Reading: Proverbs 6:12-15; Psalm 10; Matthew 19

“A worthless person, a wicked man, goes about with crooked speech, winks with his eyes, signals with his feet, points with his finger, with perverted heart devises evil, continually sowing discord; therefore calamity will come upon him suddenly; in a moment he will be broken beyond healing.” — Proverbs 6:12–15
“Why does the wicked renounce God and say in his heart, ‘You will not call to account’?” — Psalm 10:13
“Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.’” — Matthew 19:14

You’ve probably heard the phrase “Don’t be that guy.” There’s always that guy in movies or on social media—the one who’s fake, shady, or just plain toxic. Proverbs 6 gives us God’s version of that guy—someone who spreads lies, stirs up drama, and thinks they’ll get away with it. But God isn’t blind. Psalm 10 reminds us that even when people act like they’re untouchable, God sees, and He will hold them accountable.
On the flip side, Matthew 19 shows us who does get close to Jesus—those with a humble, childlike heart. While the wicked try to play games and pretend God won’t notice, Jesus opens His arms to the ones who come with simple faith and honesty.
In a world where being slick or savage is celebrated, God invites you to be something different. He’s not fooled by smooth talk or shady behavior. He’s looking for a heart that stays real, walks in love, and refuses to stir up drama. Don’t play the fool—walk in wisdom and stay close to Jesus.

THINK ABOUT IT
1. Check Your Heart: Are there areas in your life where you’ve been dishonest or stirred up drama? God sees past our words and straight into our hearts.
2. Don’t Be Fooled by Appearances: Just because someone seems popular or clever doesn’t mean they’re walking with God. How can you spot the difference between wise and foolish influences?
3. Choose the Childlike Way: Jesus honored the humility and faith of children. What would it look like for you to trust God with a simple, honest heart this week?

BOTTOM LINE
God isn’t impressed by cleverness—He’s drawn to honesty, humility, and a heart that stays close to Him.

PRAYER
Heavenly Father, help me recognize and reject anything in my heart that leads me away from You. Keep me from the foolish ways that only cause damage, and give me the kind of faith that pleases You. Help me walk in truth, kindness, and love every day. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
00:00:02,440 –> 00:00:05,800
Welcome to Bible Chat, where we
have devotional conversations
2
00:00:06,120 –> 00:00:11,240
rooted in Scripture and relevant
for today, January 22nd.
3
00:00:11,680 –> 00:00:14,400
Don’t play the fool, you’ve
probably heard someone say.
4
00:00:14,400 –> 00:00:17,440
Don’t be that guy.
You know the type, the one who’s
5
00:00:17,440 –> 00:00:20,480
always stirring something up,
twisting words, playing games,
6
00:00:20,640 –> 00:00:22,840
and somehow thinking it’s funny
or harmless.
7
00:00:23,160 –> 00:00:26,200
In real life, that kind of
behavior might even get rewarded
8
00:00:26,200 –> 00:00:29,080
for a while.
People might laugh, follow, or
9
00:00:29,080 –> 00:00:33,320
hype it up, but God sees past
the act, and Proverbs chapter 6
10
00:00:33,320 –> 00:00:37,120
doesn’t sugarcoat it.
Proverbs chapter 6, verses 12 to
11
00:00:37,120 –> 00:00:41,440
15, describes a person who uses
crooked speech, subtle signals,
12
00:00:41,640 –> 00:00:43,720
and hidden intentions to stir up
trouble.
13
00:00:44,080 –> 00:00:46,560
This isn’t someone who makes an
honest mistake.
14
00:00:47,080 –> 00:00:50,720
This is someone who lives with a
divided heart, constantly sowing
15
00:00:50,720 –> 00:00:53,640
discord and assuming there will
be no consequences.
16
00:00:54,000 –> 00:00:55,480
And then Scripture gives a
warning.
17
00:00:55,480 –> 00:01:00,000
Calamity comes suddenly, not
slowly, not eventually suddenly.
18
00:01:00,360 –> 00:01:03,480
Foolish living always catches
up, even when it looks clever at
19
00:01:03,480 –> 00:01:06,960
1st.
Psalm 10, verse 13 exposes the
20
00:01:06,960 –> 00:01:08,960
mindset behind that kind of
behavior.
21
00:01:09,280 –> 00:01:12,040
It says, why does the wicked
renounce God and say in his
22
00:01:12,040 –> 00:01:14,000
heart, you will not call to
account?
23
00:01:14,560 –> 00:01:17,800
That’s the lie at the center of
foolishness, the belief that God
24
00:01:17,800 –> 00:01:20,360
doesn’t see, doesn’t care, or
won’t respond.
25
00:01:20,680 –> 00:01:23,360
But silence from God is not the
same as absence.
26
00:01:23,800 –> 00:01:26,040
God is patient, but He is not
blind.
27
00:01:26,400 –> 00:01:29,840
He sees the motives behind the
words, the intentions behind the
28
00:01:29,840 –> 00:01:32,960
actions, and the pride hiding
behind the performance.
29
00:01:33,480 –> 00:01:36,280
Then Matthew chapter 19 flips
the whole picture.
30
00:01:36,520 –> 00:01:39,640
While the disciples try to push
children away, Jesus does the
31
00:01:39,640 –> 00:01:42,560
opposite.
He says, let the little children
32
00:01:42,560 –> 00:01:45,480
come to me and do not hinder
them, for to such belongs the
33
00:01:45,480 –> 00:01:48,680
Kingdom of heaven.
Children don’t come with masks.
34
00:01:49,080 –> 00:01:51,920
They don’t come with schemes.
They come honest, dependent, and
35
00:01:51,920 –> 00:01:53,880
open.
And Jesus says that’s the
36
00:01:53,880 –> 00:01:55,840
posture that belongs in God’s
Kingdom.
37
00:01:56,240 –> 00:01:59,240
Here’s the contrast.
Foolishness says I can get away
38
00:01:59,240 –> 00:02:01,960
with this.
Wisdom says, God, I want to walk
39
00:02:01,960 –> 00:02:04,560
close to you.
Foolishness hides behind
40
00:02:04,560 –> 00:02:06,720
sarcasm, manipulation, and
drama.
41
00:02:07,040 –> 00:02:10,639
Wisdom chooses truth, humility,
and peace, even when that path
42
00:02:10,639 –> 00:02:13,640
doesn’t get applause.
God isn’t impressed by how slick
43
00:02:13,640 –> 00:02:15,760
you sound or how well you can
play the game.
44
00:02:16,280 –> 00:02:17,880
He’s drawn to a heart that’s
real.
45
00:02:18,320 –> 00:02:21,640
In a world that celebrates being
savage, shady, or self
46
00:02:21,640 –> 00:02:24,720
protective, choosing wisdom can
feel countercultural.
47
00:02:25,040 –> 00:02:27,760
But staying close to Jesus
requires honesty.
48
00:02:28,200 –> 00:02:31,600
It requires humility.
It requires refusing to stir
49
00:02:31,600 –> 00:02:34,840
what God wants to heal.
Don’t play the fool by trading
50
00:02:34,840 –> 00:02:37,360
character for attention.
Walk in wisdom.
51
00:02:37,680 –> 00:02:40,520
Walk in truth.
Stay close to Jesus and let your
52
00:02:40,520 –> 00:02:42,600
life reflect Him.
Let’s pray.
53
00:02:43,040 –> 00:02:46,160
Heavenly Father, search my heart
and show me anything that pulls
54
00:02:46,160 –> 00:02:48,160
me toward foolishness instead of
wisdom.
55
00:02:48,520 –> 00:02:52,120
Help me turn away from
dishonesty, pride, and drama and
56
00:02:52,120 –> 00:02:54,480
teach me to walk with a humble,
honest heart.
57
00:02:55,080 –> 00:02:58,120
I want the kind of faith that
draws me closer to Jesus and
58
00:02:58,120 –> 00:03:01,600
reflects Your love to others.
Shape my words, my actions and
59
00:03:01,600 –> 00:03:05,120
my motives so they honor You in
Jesus name, Amen.
60
00:03:06,040 –> 00:03:09,120
What if the ache you feel for
more is actually God calling you
61
00:03:09,120 –> 00:03:11,760
deeper?

Proverbs Chapter 6 Verses 12 to
85
00:04:29,440 –> 00:04:34,000
15 World English Bible A
worthless person, a man of
86
00:04:34,000 –> 00:04:37,280
iniquity, is he who walks with a
perverse mouth, who winks with
87
00:04:37,280 –> 00:04:40,440
his eyes, who signals with his
feet, who motions with his
88
00:04:40,440 –> 00:04:43,680
fingers, in whose heart is
perverseness, who devises evil
89
00:04:43,680 –> 00:04:46,080
continually, who always sows
discord.
90
00:04:46,400 –> 00:04:49,600
Therefore his calamity will come
suddenly, he will be broken
91
00:04:49,600 –> 00:04:51,400
suddenly, and that without
remedy.
92
00:04:51,920 –> 00:04:56,000
Psalm Chapter 10 World English
Bible Why do you stand far off
93
00:04:56,000 –> 00:04:58,040
Yahweh?
Why do you hide yourself in
94
00:04:58,040 –> 00:05:00,880
times of trouble?
In arrogance the wicked hunt
95
00:05:00,880 –> 00:05:03,320
down the weak.
They are caught in the schemes
96
00:05:03,320 –> 00:05:06,520
that they devise, For the wicked
boasts of his heart’s cravings.
97
00:05:06,960 –> 00:05:09,160
He blesses the greedy and
condemns Yahweh.
98
00:05:09,480 –> 00:05:12,520
The wicked in the pride of his
face has no room in his thoughts
99
00:05:12,520 –> 00:05:15,120
for God.
His ways are prosperous at all
100
00:05:15,120 –> 00:05:17,720
times.
He is arrogant, and your laws
101
00:05:17,720 –> 00:05:20,960
are far from His sight.
As for all his adversaries, he
102
00:05:20,960 –> 00:05:23,800
sneers at them.
He says in his heart, I shall
103
00:05:23,800 –> 00:05:27,120
not be shaken for generations.
I shall have no trouble.
104
00:05:27,640 –> 00:05:30,360
His mouth is full of cursing,
deceit and oppression.
105
00:05:30,760 –> 00:05:32,880
Under his tongue is mischief and
iniquity.
106
00:05:33,160 –> 00:05:36,280
He lies in wait near the
villages from ambushes.
107
00:05:36,280 –> 00:05:39,400
He murders the innocent.
His eyes are secretly set
108
00:05:39,400 –> 00:05:42,600
against the helpless.
He lurks in secret as a lion in
109
00:05:42,600 –> 00:05:45,040
his ambush.
He lies in wait to catch the
110
00:05:45,040 –> 00:05:47,360
helpless.
He catches the helpless when he
111
00:05:47,360 –> 00:05:50,080
draws him in his net.
The helpless are crushed.
112
00:05:50,240 –> 00:05:52,720
They collapse, They fall under
his strength.
113
00:05:53,120 –> 00:05:55,240
He says in his heart, God has
forgotten.
114
00:05:55,360 –> 00:05:58,400
He hides his face.
He will never see it arise.
115
00:05:58,400 –> 00:06:01,600
Yahweh, God, lift up your hand.
Don’t forget the helpless.
116
00:06:02,040 –> 00:06:04,640
Why does the wicked person
condemn God and say in his
117
00:06:04,640 –> 00:06:08,160
heart, God won’t call me into
account, but you do see trouble
118
00:06:08,160 –> 00:06:10,960
and grief, you consider it to
take it into your hand.
119
00:06:11,320 –> 00:06:14,400
You help the victim and the
fatherless break the arm of the
120
00:06:14,400 –> 00:06:17,120
wicked.
As for the evil man, seek out
121
00:06:17,120 –> 00:06:18,840
his wickedness until you find
none.
122
00:06:19,160 –> 00:06:22,760
Yahweh is king forever and ever
the nations will perish out of
123
00:06:22,760 –> 00:06:24,920
his land.
Yahweh, you have heard the
124
00:06:24,920 –> 00:06:27,560
desire of the humble.
You will prepare their heart,
125
00:06:27,960 –> 00:06:30,800
You will cause your ear to hear,
to judge the fatherless and the
126
00:06:30,800 –> 00:06:33,080
oppressed.
That man who is of the earth may
127
00:06:33,080 –> 00:06:36,960
terrify no more.
Matthew Chapter 19 World English
128
00:06:36,960 –> 00:06:40,760
Bible When Jesus had finished
these words, he departed from
129
00:06:40,760 –> 00:06:43,280
Galilee and came into the
borders of Judea beyond the
130
00:06:43,280 –> 00:06:45,960
Jordan.
Great multitudes followed him,
131
00:06:46,080 –> 00:06:49,200
and he healed them there.
Pharisees came to him, testing
132
00:06:49,200 –> 00:06:52,720
him and saying, Is it lawful for
a man to divorce his wife for
133
00:06:52,720 –> 00:06:55,840
any reason?
He answered, Haven’t you read
134
00:06:55,840 –> 00:06:58,320
that he who made them from the
beginning made them male and
135
00:06:58,320 –> 00:07:02,040
female, and said, For this cause
a man shall leave his father and
136
00:07:02,040 –> 00:07:05,040
mother and shall be joined to
his wife, and the two shall
137
00:07:05,040 –> 00:07:08,800
become one flesh, so that they
are no more 2 but one flesh.
138
00:07:09,160 –> 00:07:11,040
What therefore God has joined
together?
139
00:07:11,040 –> 00:07:14,760
Don’t let man tear apart.
They asked him, Why then did
140
00:07:14,760 –> 00:07:17,600
Moses command us to give her a
certificate of divorce and
141
00:07:17,600 –> 00:07:20,960
divorce her?
He said to them, Moses, because
142
00:07:20,960 –> 00:07:23,520
of the hardness of your hearts,
allowed you to divorce your
143
00:07:23,520 –> 00:07:26,160
wives, but from the beginning it
has not been so.
144
00:07:26,520 –> 00:07:29,800
I tell you that whoever divorces
his wife, except for sexual
145
00:07:29,800 –> 00:07:33,280
immorality, and marries another,
commits adultery, and he who
146
00:07:33,280 –> 00:07:35,800
marries her when she is divorced
commits adultery.
147
00:07:36,440 –> 00:07:39,600
His disciples said to him, If
this is the case of the man with
148
00:07:39,600 –> 00:07:41,840
his wife, it is not expedient to
Mary.
149
00:07:42,520 –> 00:07:45,760
But he said to them, Not all men
can receive this saying, but
150
00:07:45,760 –> 00:07:48,440
those to whom it is given.
For there are eunuchs who were
151
00:07:48,440 –> 00:07:50,960
born that way from their
mother’s womb, and there are
152
00:07:50,960 –> 00:07:54,160
eunuchs who were made eunuchs by
men, and there are eunuchs who
153
00:07:54,160 –> 00:07:55,840
made themselves eunuchs for the
Kingdom.
154
00:07:55,840 –> 00:07:59,400
Of heaven’s sake, he who is able
to receive it, let him receive
155
00:07:59,400 –> 00:08:01,360
it.
Then little children were
156
00:08:01,360 –> 00:08:04,200
brought to him, that he should
lay his hands on them and pray.
157
00:08:04,520 –> 00:08:08,400
And the disciples rebuked them.
But Jesus said, Allow the little
158
00:08:08,400 –> 00:08:11,520
children, and don’t forbid them
to come to me, for the Kingdom
159
00:08:11,520 –> 00:08:13,600
of heaven belongs to ones like
these.
160
00:08:14,200 –> 00:08:16,640
He laid his hands on them and
departed from there.
161
00:08:16,960 –> 00:08:20,000
Behold, one came to him and
said, Good teacher, what good
162
00:08:20,000 –> 00:08:22,240
thing shall I do that I may have
eternal life?
163
00:08:22,600 –> 00:08:24,720
He said to him, Why do you call
me good?
164
00:08:25,040 –> 00:08:27,160
No one is good but one.
That is God.
165
00:08:27,480 –> 00:08:30,000
But if you want to enter into
life, keep the commandments.
166
00:08:30,360 –> 00:08:33,200
He said to him, Which ones?
Jesus said, You shall not
167
00:08:33,200 –> 00:08:36,600
murder, you shall not commit
adultery, you shall not steal,
168
00:08:36,919 –> 00:08:38,799
you shall not offer false
testimony.
169
00:08:39,200 –> 00:08:41,760
Honor your Father and your
mother, and you shall love your
170
00:08:41,760 –> 00:08:44,920
neighbor as yourself.
The young man said to him, All
171
00:08:44,920 –> 00:08:47,760
these things I have observed
from my youth, what do I still
172
00:08:47,760 –> 00:08:50,200
lack?
Jesus said to him, If you want
173
00:08:50,200 –> 00:08:53,440
to be perfect, go sell what you
have and give to the poor, and
174
00:08:53,440 –> 00:08:56,040
you will have treasure in
heaven, and come follow me.
175
00:08:56,680 –> 00:08:59,480
But when the young man heard
this, he went away sad, for he
176
00:08:59,480 –> 00:09:01,120
was one who had great
possessions.
177
00:09:01,560 –> 00:09:05,400
Jesus said to his disciples,
Most certainly, I say to you, a
178
00:09:05,400 –> 00:09:07,720
rich man will enter into the
Kingdom of heaven with
179
00:09:07,720 –> 00:09:10,440
difficulty.
Again, I tell you, it is easier
180
00:09:10,440 –> 00:09:13,040
for a camel to go through a
needle’s eye than for a rich man
181
00:09:13,040 –> 00:09:16,280
to enter into God’s Kingdom.
When the disciples heard it,
182
00:09:16,320 –> 00:09:19,160
they were exceedingly
astonished, saying, Who then can
183
00:09:19,160 –> 00:09:21,640
be saved?
Looking at them, Jesus said,
184
00:09:21,880 –> 00:09:24,640
With men this is impossible, but
with God all things are
185
00:09:24,640 –> 00:09:27,920
possible.
Then Peter answered, Behold, we
186
00:09:27,920 –> 00:09:29,640
have left everything and
followed you.
187
00:09:30,000 –> 00:09:32,560
What then will we have?
Jesus said to them?
188
00:09:32,880 –> 00:09:34,840
Most certainly.
I tell you that you who have
189
00:09:34,840 –> 00:09:38,120
followed me in the regeneration,
when the Son of Man will sit on
190
00:09:38,120 –> 00:09:41,640
the throne of his glory, you
also will sit on 12 Thrones
191
00:09:41,760 –> 00:09:45,840
judging the 12 tribes of Israel.
Everyone who has left houses or
192
00:09:45,840 –> 00:09:49,840
brothers or sisters or father or
mother or wife or children or
193
00:09:49,840 –> 00:09:53,800
lands, for my name’s sake, will
receive 100 times and will
194
00:09:53,800 –> 00:09:56,440
inherit eternal life.
But many will be last.
195
00:09:56,440 –> 00:09:58,520
Who are first and first who are
last?
