JANUARY 7 – First Things First
3-Year-Bible Reading: Proverbs 3:9–10; Psalm 5; Matthew 4

“Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your produce; then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will be bursting with wine.” —Proverbs 3:9–10
“For you are not a God who delights in wickedness; evil may not dwell with you.” —Psalm 5:4
“But he answered, ‘It is written, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.”’” —Matthew 4:4

It’s easy to give God the leftovers—of our time, our energy, our attention. We scroll for hours, binge-watch entire seasons, and then maybe pray for five minutes before bed—if we’re still awake. But in Proverbs 3:9, we’re challenged to give God our firstfruits—our best, not what’s left. Jesus modeled this in Matthew 4. When Satan tempted Him, Jesus didn’t try to argue or flex His power. He simply put God’s Word first—quoting it as His ultimate source of strength. And in Psalm 5, we see that God isn’t interested in being part of a life where evil or compromise is calling the shots. When we start our day—our thoughts, our choices, our everything—with God, we’re building lives that are full, not just busy.

THINK ABOUT IT
1. God Deserves Your Best: Are you giving God the best part of your day, or just what’s leftover? What would it look like to put Him first in your schedule, your goals, and even your playlists?
2. God’s Word is Fuel: Jesus reminded Satan that life is about more than food—it’s about God’s truth. What lies are you believing that God’s Word can silence?
3. Compromise Crowds Out God: Psalm 5:4 reminds us that evil and God can’t share the same space. Is there anything in your heart or habits that’s keeping God at a distance?

BOTTOM LINE
Putting God first unlocks the fullness of life He’s designed for you.

PRAYER
Heavenly Father, I want to give You my best, not my leftovers. Teach me how to honor You with my time, my thoughts, and everything I do. Help me crave Your Word more than anything else and keep my heart clean so You can dwell in it fully. I want to start every day with You and trust that You’ll fill my life with more than I could ever imagine. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
00:00:02,440 –> 00:00:05,800
Welcome to Bible Chat, where we
have devotional conversations
2
00:00:06,120 –> 00:00:10,920
rooted in Scripture and relevant
for today, January 7th.
3
00:00:11,280 –> 00:00:15,000
First things first, it’s so easy
to promise God will give him our
4
00:00:15,000 –> 00:00:17,680
time later.
After the notifications slow
5
00:00:17,680 –> 00:00:21,640
down, after the schedule clears,
after we’ve handled what feels
6
00:00:21,640 –> 00:00:24,440
urgent.
But most days later never really
7
00:00:24,440 –> 00:00:26,600
comes.
We wake up reaching for our
8
00:00:26,600 –> 00:00:29,440
phones, rush into
responsibilities, and by the
9
00:00:29,440 –> 00:00:32,119
time we finally slow down, we’re
running on empty.
10
00:00:32,520 –> 00:00:35,800
And without even meaning to, God
gets the leftovers of our
11
00:00:35,800 –> 00:00:37,840
attention, energy, and
affection.
12
00:00:38,440 –> 00:00:42,520
Proverbs chapter 3, verses 9 to
10 gently but firmly challenge
13
00:00:42,520 –> 00:00:44,920
that pattern.
Honor the Lord with your wealth
14
00:00:45,040 –> 00:00:47,080
and with the first fruits of all
your produce.
15
00:00:47,440 –> 00:00:50,400
Then your barns will be filled
with plenty, and your vats will
16
00:00:50,400 –> 00:00:53,760
be bursting with wine.
God isn’t just talking about
17
00:00:53,760 –> 00:00:56,120
money here.
He’s talking about priority.
18
00:00:56,480 –> 00:01:00,200
First Fruits mean first place,
the first part of your day, the
19
00:01:00,200 –> 00:01:03,200
first say in your decisions, the
first claim on your heart.
20
00:01:03,640 –> 00:01:06,080
When God comes first, he
promises fullness.
21
00:01:06,280 –> 00:01:09,560
Not an empty kind of busy, but a
life filled with purpose and
22
00:01:09,560 –> 00:01:12,280
provision.
Psalm 5 adds another layer.
23
00:01:12,640 –> 00:01:16,080
Verse 4 says, for you are not a
God who delights in wickedness.
24
00:01:16,360 –> 00:01:20,200
Evil may not dwell with you.
God isn’t interested in sharing
25
00:01:20,200 –> 00:01:23,120
space with compromise.
When we try to keep God on the
26
00:01:23,120 –> 00:01:26,600
side while holding onto habits,
mindsets, or choices we know
27
00:01:26,600 –> 00:01:28,920
don’t honor Him, we end up
crowding Him out.
28
00:01:29,240 –> 00:01:33,000
Putting God first means making
room for Him to truly dwell, not
29
00:01:33,000 –> 00:01:36,200
just visit occasionally.
Then in Matthew chapter 4, we
30
00:01:36,200 –> 00:01:38,560
see Jesus face temptation in the
wilderness.
31
00:01:38,960 –> 00:01:43,120
He’s hungry, tired, and alone.
Satan offers him a shortcut.
32
00:01:43,280 –> 00:01:46,600
Meet a real need in an easy way.
But Jesus responds with
33
00:01:46,600 –> 00:01:48,840
Scripture.
Man shall not live by bread
34
00:01:48,840 –> 00:01:52,080
alone, but by every word that
comes from the mouth of God.
35
00:01:52,760 –> 00:01:55,760
Jesus shows us that real life
isn’t sustained by what we
36
00:01:55,760 –> 00:02:00,120
consume, achieve, or accumulate.
It’s sustained by God’s Word.
37
00:02:00,440 –> 00:02:02,160
That’s our fuel.
That’s our strength.
38
00:02:02,600 –> 00:02:05,080
When you put God first, you’re
not losing anything.
39
00:02:05,160 –> 00:02:07,360
You’re gaining clarity,
stability, and depth.
40
00:02:07,840 –> 00:02:10,080
Your days become anchored
instead of scattered.
41
00:02:10,440 –> 00:02:12,840
Your choices become guided
instead of reactive.
42
00:02:13,360 –> 00:02:16,520
Life doesn’t just get fuller on
the outside, it gets richer on
43
00:02:16,520 –> 00:02:18,400
the inside.
Let’s pray.
44
00:02:18,800 –> 00:02:21,480
Heavenly Father, I don’t want to
give you what’s leftover.
45
00:02:21,960 –> 00:02:25,080
I want to give You my best.
Teach me to put You first in my
46
00:02:25,080 –> 00:02:27,240
time, my thoughts and my
choices.
47
00:02:27,760 –> 00:02:30,480
Help me hunger for Your word
more than anything else and
48
00:02:30,480 –> 00:02:32,720
remove anything in my life that
competes with You.
49
00:02:33,160 –> 00:02:35,960
I trust that when I honor You
first, You will fill my life
50
00:02:35,960 –> 00:02:39,080
with true abundance in Jesus
name, Amen.
51
00:02:40,120 –> 00:02:43,240
What if the ache you feel for
more is actually God calling you
52
00:02:43,240 –> 00:02:45,880
deeper?

Yahweh with your substance, with

the first fruits of all your

00:04:10,280 –> 00:04:13,200
So your barns will be filled
with plenty, and your vats will

00:04:13,200 –> 00:04:17,240
overflow with new wine.

Bible for the chief musician

81
00:04:20,680 –> 00:04:23,280
David.
Give ear to my words, Yahweh.
82
00:04:23,440 –> 00:04:26,760
Consider my meditation.
Listen to the voice of my cry,
83
00:04:26,760 –> 00:04:29,720
my King and my God, for I pray
to you, Yahweh.
84
00:04:29,720 –> 00:04:31,400
In the morning you will hear My
voice.
85
00:04:31,760 –> 00:04:34,560
In the morning I will lay My
requests before you and will
86
00:04:34,560 –> 00:04:37,480
watch expectantly.
For you are not a God who has
87
00:04:37,480 –> 00:04:40,440
pleasure in wickedness.
Evil can’t live with you.
88
00:04:40,760 –> 00:04:42,680
The arrogant will not stand in
your sight.
89
00:04:43,000 –> 00:04:44,680
You hate all workers of
iniquity.
90
00:04:45,000 –> 00:04:46,880
You will destroy those who speak
lies.
91
00:04:47,320 –> 00:04:50,080
Yahweh abhors the bloodthirsty
and deceitful man.
92
00:04:50,520 –> 00:04:53,720
But As for me, in the abundance
of Your loving kindness, I will
93
00:04:53,720 –> 00:04:56,400
come into Your house.
I will bow toward Your holy
94
00:04:56,400 –> 00:04:59,280
temple in reverence of You.
Lead me, Yahweh, in Your
95
00:04:59,280 –> 00:05:02,320
righteousness, because of my
enemies, make Your way straight
96
00:05:02,320 –> 00:05:05,440
before My face, for there is no
faithfulness in their mouth.
97
00:05:05,840 –> 00:05:09,120
Their heart is destruction,
their throat is an open tomb.
98
00:05:09,360 –> 00:05:13,080
They flatter with their tongue.
Hold them guilty, God, Let them
99
00:05:13,080 –> 00:05:16,560
fall by their own counsels.
Thrust them out in the multitude
100
00:05:16,560 –> 00:05:19,160
of their transgressions, for
they have rebelled against You.
101
00:05:19,760 –> 00:05:23,000
But let all those who take
refuge and you rejoice, let them
102
00:05:23,000 –> 00:05:25,400
always shout for joy, because
you defend them.
103
00:05:25,760 –> 00:05:28,640
Let them also who love Your
name, be joyful in you, for You
104
00:05:28,640 –> 00:05:31,560
will bless the righteous Yahweh.
You will surround him with
105
00:05:31,560 –> 00:05:35,480
favor, as with a shield.
Matthew chapter 4 World English
106
00:05:35,480 –> 00:05:39,040
Bible Then Jesus was led up by
the Spirit into the wilderness
107
00:05:39,040 –> 00:05:42,800
to be tempted by the devil.
When he had fasted 40 days and
108
00:05:42,800 –> 00:05:46,520
40 nights, he was hungry.
Afterward the tempter came and
109
00:05:46,520 –> 00:05:49,480
said to him, If you are the Son
of God, command that these
110
00:05:49,480 –> 00:05:53,040
stones become bread.
But he answered, It is written,
111
00:05:53,120 –> 00:05:56,320
Man shall not live by bread
alone, but by every word that
112
00:05:56,320 –> 00:05:59,840
proceeds out of God’s mouth.
Then the devil took him into the
113
00:05:59,840 –> 00:06:02,160
holy city.
He set him on the pinnacle of
114
00:06:02,160 –> 00:06:05,800
the temple, and said to him, If
you are the Son of God, throw
115
00:06:05,800 –> 00:06:08,640
yourself down, For it is
written, He will command his
116
00:06:08,640 –> 00:06:12,120
angels concerning you, and on
their hands they will bear you
117
00:06:12,160 –> 00:06:14,840
up, so that you don’t dash your
foot against a stone.
118
00:06:15,440 –> 00:06:18,800
Jesus said to him, Again, It is
written, You shall not test the
119
00:06:18,800 –> 00:06:21,920
Lord your God.
Again the devil took him to an
120
00:06:21,920 –> 00:06:24,960
exceedingly high mountain and
showed him all the kingdoms of
121
00:06:24,960 –> 00:06:28,360
the world and their glory.
He said to him, I will give you
122
00:06:28,360 –> 00:06:31,040
all of these things, if you will
fall down and worship me.
123
00:06:31,600 –> 00:06:34,720
Then Jesus said to him, Get
behind me, Satan, for it is
124
00:06:34,720 –> 00:06:37,200
written, You shall worship the
Lord your God, and you shall
125
00:06:37,200 –> 00:06:40,280
serve him only.
Then the devil left him, and
126
00:06:40,280 –> 00:06:42,360
behold, angels came and served
him.
127
00:06:42,720 –> 00:06:46,000
Now when Jesus heard that John
was delivered up, he withdrew
128
00:06:46,000 –> 00:06:49,680
into Galilee, leaving Nazareth.
He came and lived in Capernaum,
129
00:06:50,040 –> 00:06:53,120
which is by the sea in the
region of Zebulun and Naphtali
130
00:06:53,200 –> 00:06:55,520
that it might be fulfilled,
which was spoken through Isaiah
131
00:06:55,520 –> 00:06:59,880
the prophet saying the land of
Zebulun and the land of Naftali
132
00:06:59,920 –> 00:07:03,240
toward the sea beyond the
Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles.
133
00:07:03,680 –> 00:07:06,000
The people who sat in darkness
saw a great light.
134
00:07:06,360 –> 00:07:08,840
To those who sat in the region
in shadow of death, to them
135
00:07:08,840 –> 00:07:12,000
light has dawned.
From that time Jesus began to
136
00:07:12,000 –> 00:07:15,440
preach and to say repent, for
the Kingdom of heaven is at
137
00:07:15,440 –> 00:07:17,920
hand.
Walking by the Sea of Galilee,
138
00:07:17,920 –> 00:07:22,040
he saw two brothers, Simon, who
is called Peter, and Andrew his
139
00:07:22,040 –> 00:07:25,280
brother, casting a net into the
sea, for they were fishermen.
140
00:07:25,640 –> 00:07:28,520
He said to them, Come after me
and I will make you fishers for
141
00:07:28,520 –> 00:07:31,000
men.
They immediately left their Nets
142
00:07:31,000 –> 00:07:34,000
and followed him.
Going on from there, he saw two
143
00:07:34,000 –> 00:07:37,360
other brothers, James the son of
Zebedee, and John his brother,
144
00:07:37,440 –> 00:07:39,120
in the boat with Zebedee their
father.
145
00:07:39,120 –> 00:07:41,320
Mending their Nets, he called
them.
146
00:07:41,720 –> 00:07:44,400
They immediately left the boat
and their Father and followed
147
00:07:44,400 –> 00:07:47,400
him.
Jesus went about in all Galilee,
148
00:07:47,640 –> 00:07:50,240
teaching in their synagogues,
preaching the good news of the
149
00:07:50,240 –> 00:07:53,600
Kingdom, and healing every
disease and every sickness among
150
00:07:53,600 –> 00:07:55,880
the people.
The report about him went out
151
00:07:55,880 –> 00:07:58,840
into all Syria.
They brought to him all who were
152
00:07:58,840 –> 00:08:02,640
sick, afflicted with various
diseases and torments, possessed
153
00:08:02,640 –> 00:08:06,200
with demons, epileptics, and
paralytics, and He healed them.
154
00:08:06,560 –> 00:08:11,000
Great multitudes from Galilee,
Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and
155
00:08:11,000 –> 00:08:12,680
from beyond the Jordan followed
Him.
