“Grandchildren are the crown of the aged, and the glory of children is their fathers. Fine speech is not becoming to a fool; still less is false speech to a prince.” — Proverbs 17:6–7
“They hold fast to their evil purpose; they talk of laying snares secretly, thinking, ‘Who can see them?’” — Psalm 64:5
“Then the magicians said to Pharaoh, ‘This is the finger of God.’ But Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he would not listen to them, as the Lord had said.” — Exodus 8:19

Have you ever been caught saying something you regret—or not saying something you should have? Whether it’s gossip, sarcasm, or silence when truth is needed, our words carry a lot of weight. In Proverbs 17:6–7, we see the value of legacy and how speech reflects character. A fool can’t fake wisdom with fancy words, and someone in a position of influence shouldn’t lie—it just doesn’t fit. In Psalm 64, David describes people who use their words to trap others. They think no one notices, but God does. And in Exodus 8, Pharaoh’s refusal to listen—even when truth stared him in the face—shows how a hardened heart resists what God is clearly doing.
The Bible connects words, hearts, and legacy. What you say (and how you listen) matters more than you think.

THINK ABOUT IT
1. Your Words Reflect Your Heart: Are your words encouraging, truthful, and life-giving—or sarcastic, dishonest, or hurtful? What would someone learn about your heart by listening to you?
2. Listening to God Matters: Pharaoh had every chance to listen, but he didn’t. Are there areas in your life where you know what God is saying but keep ignoring it?
3. What Kind of Legacy Are You Building? Proverbs reminds us that kids look up to their parents and grandparents. Whether you realize it or not, you’re already shaping a legacy. What do you want to be remembered for?

BOTTOM LINE
God cares about your words and your heart. When you speak truth, listen well, and live wisely, you leave behind a legacy that honors Him and blesses others.

PRAYER
Heavenly Father, Help me to speak words that bring life, truth, and hope. Guard my heart so I won’t be like Pharaoh—prideful and closed off. Teach me to listen to You and to build a legacy that reflects Your love. Let my life point others to You through what I say and how I live. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
