“The wise of heart is called discerning, and sweetness of speech increases persuasiveness.” — Proverbs 16:21

“Having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints.” — Ephesians 1:18

Have you ever wondered why wisdom is so important? Proverbs 16:21 shows us that being wise in heart leads to being persuasive and trustworthy. It’s not about being the loudest or most impressive—it’s about being discerning, knowing when to speak, and how to listen. We all have moments when we can speak wisely and bring peace into situations, and in doing so, we point others to Christ.

Then, in Ephesians 1:18, Paul prays that our hearts would be enlightened so that we can truly understand the hope of our calling in Christ. This is more than just head knowledge—it’s about knowing the riches of what it means to belong to God, and that knowledge should shape how we live and how we treat others. Wisdom comes from understanding our value in Christ, and it encourages us to use our words and actions to reflect His love.

THINK ABOUT IT

1. Wisdom in Action: How can you be more discerning in your speech and actions this week? What’s one situation where you could practice speaking wisely instead of reacting impulsively?

2. Understanding Your Worth: What do you think it means to have an “inheritance in the saints”? How does understanding your worth in Christ change how you view your life and purpose?

3. Enlightened Hearts: How can you actively invite God to enlighten your heart and mind so that you can know His calling and purpose for you?

BOTTOM LINE

Wisdom isn’t just about knowing the right things—it’s about understanding your worth in Christ and using that knowledge to live out His calling in your life, especially in how you speak and act.
