“Better is a poor person who walks in his integrity than one who is crooked in speech and is a fool. Desire without knowledge is not good, and whoever makes haste with his feet misses his way.” — Proverbs 19:1–2 (ESV)

“David strengthened himself in the Lord his God. And David recovered all that the Amalekites had carried away, including his two wives.” — 1 Samuel 30:6, 19 (ESV)

________________________________________

Have you ever had a day where everything seemed to go wrong? Maybe someone hurt your feelings, you failed a test, or plans fell apart. David faced a similar moment in 1 Samuel 30 when he returned to find his city destroyed and his family taken. But instead of panicking, David strengthened himself in the Lord, and that courage led him to recover everything that was lost. Proverbs 19 reminds us that rushing into decisions or following desires without wisdom can get us into trouble. Facing tough moments with patience, integrity, and reliance on God allows us to navigate challenges wisely and come out stronger.

Life can throw unexpected problems at us, but our response matters more than the problem itself. Strengthening ourselves in God means praying, seeking His guidance, and making decisions based on His wisdom instead of our immediate emotions. Like David, when we act with integrity and trust in God, we can overcome setbacks and even restore what was lost.

THINK ABOUT IT

1. Integrity Over Impulse: How can choosing honesty and wisdom over quick fixes help you avoid bigger problems (Proverbs 19:1–2)?

2. Strength in God: When life feels overwhelming or unfair, what practical steps can you take to “strengthen yourself in the Lord” like David did (1 Samuel 30:6)?

3. Recover and Restore: What areas of your life need God’s guidance for restoration—relationships, school, or personal goals? How can you trust Him to help you recover?

BOTTOM LINE

When life falls apart, trusting God, acting with wisdom, and standing firm in integrity equips you to recover and grow stronger.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, thank You for being my strength when I feel weak or overwhelmed. Help me to act with wisdom, walk in integrity, and trust You to restore what is lost. Teach me to strengthen myself in You and make choices that honor You even in difficult times. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

00:00:02,480 –> 00:00:05,800
Welcome to Bible Chat, where we
have devotional conversations

2
00:00:06,120 –> 00:00:11,000
rooted in Scripture and relevant
for today, June 28th.

3
00:00:11,520 –> 00:00:16,440
Wisdom in the midst of loss.
We all have those days where

4
00:00:16,440 –> 00:00:21,080
everything falls apart at once.
Plans collapse, relationship

5
00:00:21,080 –> 00:00:24,560
strain, something you worked
hard for doesn’t come through.

6
00:00:25,040 –> 00:00:28,800
And in those moments, there’s a
particular temptation to panic,

7
00:00:28,800 –> 00:00:32,600
to react, to do something,
anything, just to regain a sense

8
00:00:32,600 –> 00:00:35,320
of control.
And sometimes that desperate

9
00:00:35,320 –> 00:00:39,000
reaching is what leads to the
second mistake that compounds

10
00:00:39,000 –> 00:00:42,720
the first one.
David experienced this in one of

11
00:00:42,720 –> 00:00:45,560
the most dramatic scenes in all
of First Samuel.

12
00:00:46,000 –> 00:00:49,440
In Chapter 30, he and his men
returned to find their city,

13
00:00:49,480 –> 00:00:53,400
Ziklag, burned to the ground.
Their families had been taken

14
00:00:53,400 –> 00:00:56,240
captive.
The men around David were so

15
00:00:56,240 –> 00:00:58,640
devastated.
They were talking about stoning

16
00:00:58,640 –> 00:01:00,840
him.
Everything that could go wrong

17
00:01:00,840 –> 00:01:03,880
had gone wrong.
And first Samuel chapter 30

18
00:01:03,880 –> 00:01:07,840
verse 6 says David strengthened
himself in the Lord his God.

19
00:01:08,760 –> 00:01:12,160
That sentence is so short and so
profound.

20
00:01:13,080 –> 00:01:15,720
He didn’t strengthen himself in
his own resilience.

21
00:01:16,200 –> 00:01:19,400
He didn’t strengthen himself
through motivational self talk.

22
00:01:19,840 –> 00:01:24,000
He went to God, he turned his
catastrophic moment into a

23
00:01:24,000 –> 00:01:26,240
moment of prayer and seeking
direction.

24
00:01:26,680 –> 00:01:29,920
And from that place of spiritual
grounding he received clear

25
00:01:29,920 –> 00:01:31,960
guidance.
Pursue and recover.

26
00:01:32,400 –> 00:01:36,120
And First Samuel chapter 30,
verse 19 tells us David

27
00:01:36,120 –> 00:01:40,800
recovered all, not some of all.
Proverbs.

28
00:01:40,800 –> 00:01:44,680
Chapter 19, verses 1 and 2 frame
the wisdom side of this

29
00:01:44,680 –> 00:01:47,680
beautifully.
Better is a poor person who

30
00:01:47,680 –> 00:01:51,280
walks in his integrity than one
who is crooked in speech and is

31
00:01:51,280 –> 00:01:54,160
a fool.
Desire without knowledge is not

32
00:01:54,160 –> 00:01:57,600
good, and whoever makes haste
with his feet misses his way.

33
00:01:58,240 –> 00:02:01,000
The person who panics and rushes
misses the path.

34
00:02:01,480 –> 00:02:05,120
The person who maintains
integrity even in loss stays on

35
00:02:05,120 –> 00:02:08,360
solid ground.
It’s not about being perfect or

36
00:02:08,360 –> 00:02:11,760
having it all figured out.
It’s about staying grounded in

37
00:02:11,760 –> 00:02:14,240
God and choosing wisdom over
impulse.

38
00:02:14,240 –> 00:02:18,400
When everything is screaming at
you to react, we all face our

39
00:02:18,400 –> 00:02:21,840
Ziklag moments.
Maybe yours isn’t as dramatic.

40
00:02:22,080 –> 00:02:26,160
Maybe it’s a failed friendship,
a grade that tanked your GPAA

41
00:02:26,600 –> 00:02:29,760
family situation that feels
completely out of your hands.

42
00:02:30,200 –> 00:02:33,960
But the principle is the same.
Before you react, before you

43
00:02:33,960 –> 00:02:37,040
send the message you’ll regret,
before you make the desperate

44
00:02:37,040 –> 00:02:39,760
move out of fear, strengthen
yourself in God.

45
00:02:40,680 –> 00:02:44,240
That means going to Scripture
and finding the promises that

46
00:02:44,240 –> 00:02:47,640
speak to your situation.
It means prayer that isn’t just

47
00:02:47,640 –> 00:02:51,320
a quick plea, but an actual
conversation where you wait long

48
00:02:51,320 –> 00:02:55,240
enough to sense God’s direction.
It means calling someone wiser

49
00:02:55,240 –> 00:02:57,480
than you and listening before
you act.

50
00:02:58,400 –> 00:03:02,360
Your recovery of relationships,
of goals, of trust, of peace is

51
00:03:02,360 –> 00:03:04,600
possible.
But it starts with the same

52
00:03:04,600 –> 00:03:09,200
place David started, not with
your own strength, with his.

53
00:03:10,080 –> 00:03:13,880
Let’s pray.
Heavenly Father, thank you for

54
00:03:13,880 –> 00:03:16,440
being our strength in the
moments when we have none of our

55
00:03:16,440 –> 00:03:20,280
own, when life falls apart and
panic wants to take over.

56
00:03:20,680 –> 00:03:24,080
Help us to do what David did, to
strengthen ourselves in You

57
00:03:24,120 –> 00:03:27,440
before we do anything else.
Give us wisdom to act with

58
00:03:27,440 –> 00:03:31,640
integrity, courage to pursue
recovery, and faith to believe

59
00:03:31,640 –> 00:03:33,680
that what feels lost can be
restored.

60
00:03:34,120 –> 00:03:38,360
We trust you with the broken
pieces in Jesus name, Amen.

61
00:03:40,600 –> 00:03:43,920
What if the night was never
meant to be ruled by fear, but

62
00:03:43,920 –> 00:03:46,480
covered by the presence and
authority of God?

63
00:03:47,040 –> 00:03:49,920

Proverbs chapter 19 verses one

to two World English Bible
Better is the poor who walks in

his integrity than he who is
perverse in his lips and is a

79
00:04:47,760 –> 00:04:50,520
fool.
It isn’t good to have zeal

80
00:04:50,520 –> 00:04:53,440
without knowledge nor being
hasty with one’s feet and

81
00:04:53,440 –> 00:04:57,240
missing the way.
First Samuel Chapter 30 World

82
00:04:57,240 –> 00:05:01,640
English Bible When David and his
men had come to Ziklag, on the

83
00:05:01,640 –> 00:05:05,360
third day, the Amalkites had
made a raid on the South and on

84
00:05:05,360 –> 00:05:10,080
Ziklag, and had struck Ziklag
and burned it with fire, and had

85
00:05:10,080 –> 00:05:13,400
taken captive the women and all
who were in it, both small and

86
00:05:13,400 –> 00:05:16,120
great.
They didn’t kill any, but

87
00:05:16,120 –> 00:05:17,720
carried them off and went their
way.

88
00:05:18,760 –> 00:05:22,240
When David and his men came to
the city, behold, it was burned

89
00:05:22,240 –> 00:05:25,880
with fire, and their wives,
their sons, and their daughters

90
00:05:25,880 –> 00:05:29,840
were taken captive.
Then David and the people who

91
00:05:29,840 –> 00:05:32,960
were with him lifted up their
voice and wept until they had no

92
00:05:32,960 –> 00:05:36,720
more power to weep.
David’s two wives were taken

93
00:05:36,720 –> 00:05:40,160
captive, Ahenome the
Jezreelitis, and Abigail the

94
00:05:40,160 –> 00:05:44,480
wife of Nabal the Carmelite.
David was greatly distressed,

95
00:05:44,840 –> 00:05:48,000
for the people spoke of stoning
him, because the souls of all

96
00:05:48,000 –> 00:05:51,320
the people were grieved, every
man for his sons and for his

97
00:05:51,320 –> 00:05:54,360
daughters.
But David strengthened himself

98
00:05:54,360 –> 00:05:58,000
in Yahweh his God.
David said to Abiathar the

99
00:05:58,000 –> 00:06:01,320
priest, the son of Ahemletch,
please bring the ephod here to

100
00:06:01,320 –> 00:06:03,640
me.
Abiathar brought the ephod to

101
00:06:03,640 –> 00:06:06,720
David.
David inquired of Yahweh,

102
00:06:06,720 –> 00:06:10,040
saying, If I pursue after this
troop, will I overtake them?

103
00:06:10,400 –> 00:06:13,760
He answered him, pursue, for you
will surely overtake them, and

104
00:06:13,760 –> 00:06:19,200
will without fail recover all.
So David went, he and the 600

105
00:06:19,200 –> 00:06:22,720
men who were with him, and came
to the brook Basore, where those

106
00:06:22,720 –> 00:06:28,160
who were left behind stayed.
But David pursued he and 400 men

107
00:06:28,560 –> 00:06:31,920
for 200 stayed behind, who were
so faint that they couldn’t go

108
00:06:31,920 –> 00:06:35,400
over the brook Basore.
They found an Egyptian in the

109
00:06:35,400 –> 00:06:39,000
field and brought him to David
and gave him bread, and he ate,

110
00:06:39,400 –> 00:06:40,920
and they gave him water to
drink.

111
00:06:41,480 –> 00:06:44,440
They gave him a piece of a cake
of figs and two clusters of

112
00:06:44,440 –> 00:06:47,400
raisins.
When he had eaten, his spirit

113
00:06:47,400 –> 00:06:50,520
came again to him, for he had
eaten no bread and drank no

114
00:06:50,520 –> 00:06:52,560
water for three days and three
nights.

115
00:06:53,080 –> 00:06:55,560
David asked him, To whom do you
belong?

116
00:06:56,600 –> 00:06:59,360
Where are you from?
He said, I’m a young man of

117
00:06:59,360 –> 00:07:03,160
Egypt, servant to an Amalekite,
and my master left me because

118
00:07:03,160 –> 00:07:07,040
three days ago I got sick.
We made a raid on the South of

119
00:07:07,040 –> 00:07:10,160
the Cherithites and on that
which belongs to Judah, and on

120
00:07:10,160 –> 00:07:13,320
the South of Caleb, and we
burned Ziklag with fire.

121
00:07:13,920 –> 00:07:17,680
David said to him, Will you
bring me down to this troop?

122
00:07:18,000 –> 00:07:21,720
He said, Swear to me by God that
you will not kill me and not

123
00:07:21,720 –> 00:07:25,480
deliver me up into the hands of
my master, and I will bring you

124
00:07:25,480 –> 00:07:27,960
down to this troop.
When he had brought him down,

125
00:07:27,960 –> 00:07:31,520
behold, they were spread around
over all the ground, eating,

126
00:07:31,560 –> 00:07:35,680
drinking, and dancing, because
of all the great plunder that

127
00:07:35,680 –> 00:07:38,640
they had taken out of the land
of the Philistines and out of

128
00:07:38,640 –> 00:07:41,960
the land of Judah.
David struck them from the

129
00:07:41,960 –> 00:07:44,240
twilight even to the evening of
the next day.

130
00:07:44,840 –> 00:07:49,000
Not a man of them escaped from
there, except 400 young men who

131
00:07:49,000 –> 00:07:53,040
rode on camels and fled.
David recovered all that the

132
00:07:53,040 –> 00:07:56,520
Amalkite had taken, and David
rescued his two wives.

133
00:07:57,560 –> 00:08:00,720
There was nothing lacking to
them, neither small nor great,

134
00:08:00,840 –> 00:08:04,120
neither sons nor daughters,
neither plunder nor anything

135
00:08:04,120 –> 00:08:05,240
that they had taken.
To them.

136
00:08:05,840 –> 00:08:09,920
David brought back all David
took all the flocks and the

137
00:08:09,920 –> 00:08:13,320
herds which they drove before
those other livestock and said

138
00:08:13,680 –> 00:08:18,800
this is David’s plunder.
David came to the 200 men who

139
00:08:18,800 –> 00:08:22,280
were so faint that they could
not follow David, whom also they

140
00:08:22,280 –> 00:08:25,400
had made to stay at the Brook
Basore, and they went out to

141
00:08:25,400 –> 00:08:28,120
meet David and to meet the
people who were with him.

142
00:08:29,160 –> 00:08:31,800
When David came near to the
people, he greeted them.

143
00:08:32,919 –> 00:08:36,400
Then all the wicked men and
worthless fellows of those who

144
00:08:36,400 –> 00:08:39,919
went with David answered and
said, Because they didn’t go

145
00:08:39,919 –> 00:08:42,960
with us, we will not give them
anything of the plunder that we

146
00:08:42,960 –> 00:08:47,320
have recovered, except to every
man, his wife and his children,

147
00:08:47,520 –> 00:08:49,480
that he may lead them away and
depart.

148
00:08:50,120 –> 00:08:53,600
Then David said, Do not do so,
my brothers, with that which

149
00:08:53,600 –> 00:08:57,800
Yahweh has given to us, who has
preserved us and delivered the

150
00:08:57,800 –> 00:09:02,040
troop that came against us into
our hand, Who will listen to you

151
00:09:02,040 –> 00:09:04,600
in this matter?
For as his share is who goes

152
00:09:04,600 –> 00:09:07,440
down to the battle, so shall his
share be, who stays with the

153

baggage they shall share alike.
It was so from that day forward

154
00:09:12,640 –> 00:09:15,480
that he made it a statute and an
ordinance for Israel to this

friends, saying, Behold a
present for you from the plunder

158
00:09:26,200 –> 00:09:29,360
of Yahweh’s enemies.
He sent it to those who were in

159
00:09:29,360 –> 00:09:32,760
Bethel, to those who were in
Ramoth of the South, to those

who were in Jadir, to those who
were in Arawar, to those who

161
00:09:37,000 –> 00:09:40,000
were in Siphmoth.
To those who were in Eshtimoa.

162
00:09:40,280 –> 00:09:43,280
To those who were in Rackle.
To those who were in the cities

163
00:09:43,280 –> 00:09:46,200
of the Jeremi Lights, To those
who were in the cities of the

164
00:09:46,200 –> 00:09:50,360
Kenites, to those who were in
