“The poor man speaks with plea, but the rich man answers roughly. A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” — Proverbs 18:23–24 (ESV)

“Then the Philistine commanders said, ‘Send the man back, that he may not go down with us to battle, lest he become a traitor to us.’ So David’s companions urged him, saying, ‘You will not go down with us to battle, for you will be put to death by the Philistines.’” — 1 Samuel 29:4–5 (ESV)

Friendships can make life feel amazing—or complicated. Some friends are like a blast of energy, fun, and adventure, but others might lead you into trouble. Proverbs 18:24 reminds us that true friends are rare; they stick closer than family when life gets tough. In 1 Samuel 29, David faced a situation where his “companions” had to make a tough call to protect him, even though it meant temporarily separating from him. True friendship sometimes means tough love, honesty, and looking out for each other, even when it’s not easy.

Life will give you people who talk a good game but disappear when things get hard. And you’ll also have friends who will stand by you, offer guidance, or even challenge you for your own good. Choosing the right friends—and being that kind of friend—is a skill that grows with wisdom, patience, and courage.

THINK ABOUT IT

1. Spot Real Friends: Who in your life is a friend that sticks closer than a brother (Proverbs 18:24)? How do you know they are trustworthy?

2. Tough Love Matters: Sometimes a friend’s advice may be hard to hear. How can you recognize when they are helping you avoid harm, like David’s companions did (1 Samuel 29:4–5)?

3. Be a Friend: What can you do to be the kind of friend who stands by others, gives honest advice, and helps them grow in wisdom and faith?

BOTTOM LINE

True friends are rare and invaluable—they stick by you, guide you, and protect you even when it’s hard.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, thank You for the friends You place in my life. Help me recognize the ones who are trustworthy, and give me the wisdom to be a friend who encourages, protects, and speaks truth in love. Teach me to surround myself with people who help me grow closer to You and guide me even when it’s difficult. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

00:00:02,480 –> 00:00:05,800
Welcome to Bible Chat, where we
have devotional conversations

2
00:00:06,120 –> 00:00:11,080
rooted in Scripture and relevant
for today, June 27th.

3
00:00:11,680 –> 00:00:16,040
Friends who shape your story.
There’s a phrase that’s been

4
00:00:16,040 –> 00:00:20,120
said so many times it almost
lost its meaning, but it’s still

5
00:00:20,120 –> 00:00:22,800
completely true.
You become like the people you

6
00:00:22,800 –> 00:00:26,320
spend the most time with.
Your habits, your language, your

7
00:00:26,320 –> 00:00:30,640
values, your ambitions, even
your faith, all of it is quietly

8
00:00:30,640 –> 00:00:32,320
shaped by who you’re doing life
with.

9
00:00:32,840 –> 00:00:34,800
That’s not scary.
It’s just true.

10
00:00:35,240 –> 00:00:38,240
And it means that choosing your
friends is one of the most

11
00:00:38,240 –> 00:00:40,280
important decisions you’ll ever
make.

12
00:00:41,200 –> 00:00:45,040
Proverbs chapter 18, verse 24
cuts right to it.

13
00:00:45,640 –> 00:00:49,040
A man of many companions may
come to ruin, but there is a

14
00:00:49,040 –> 00:00:51,120
friend who sticks closer than a
brother.

15
00:00:51,760 –> 00:00:54,800
Having a lot of people around
you isn’t the same as having

16
00:00:54,800 –> 00:00:58,200
real friendship.
Popularity is not the same as

17
00:00:58,200 –> 00:01:00,800
loyalty.
Some of the loneliest people

18
00:01:00,800 –> 00:01:04,040
have the most followers.
What the human soul actually

19
00:01:04,040 –> 00:01:07,360
needs is that rare kind of
friend, the one who shows up

20
00:01:07,360 –> 00:01:10,640
when things fall apart, who
tells you the truth even when

21
00:01:10,640 –> 00:01:13,000
it’s uncomfortable, who actually
sticks.

22
00:01:13,920 –> 00:01:18,360
First Samuel chapter 29 gives us
an unexpected illustration of

23
00:01:18,360 –> 00:01:20,560
this.
David found himself in a

24
00:01:20,560 –> 00:01:25,040
complicated situation aligned
with the Philistines in a way

25
00:01:25,040 –> 00:01:27,800
that could have forced him to
fight against his own people,

26
00:01:27,960 –> 00:01:31,240
Israel.
And in First Samuel chapter 29,

27
00:01:31,360 –> 00:01:35,840
verses 4 and 5, the Philistine
commanders actually intervened

28
00:01:36,080 –> 00:01:37,840
and sent David away from the
battle.

29
00:01:38,280 –> 00:01:42,120
His companions urged him to
leave, essentially protecting

30
00:01:42,120 –> 00:01:45,400
him from a situation that would
have put him in an impossible

31
00:01:45,400 –> 00:01:48,560
position.
Sometimes the protection of a

32
00:01:48,560 –> 00:01:50,920
true friend looks like them
steering you away from

33
00:01:50,920 –> 00:01:54,600
something, even when it’s
inconvenient, even when it

34
00:01:54,600 –> 00:01:58,280
creates friction, even when you
don’t fully understand why

35
00:01:58,280 –> 00:02:01,080
they’re pushing back.
That’s not betrayal.

36
00:02:01,520 –> 00:02:04,320
That’s loyalty that looks
further down the road than you

37
00:02:04,320 –> 00:02:07,880
can see in the moment.
The flip side of receiving that

38
00:02:07,880 –> 00:02:10,560
kind of friendship is being that
kind of friend.

39
00:02:11,000 –> 00:02:14,080
Being the person in someone
else’s life who says the hard

40
00:02:14,080 –> 00:02:18,200
thing, who doesn’t just go along
to get along, who cares enough

41
00:02:18,200 –> 00:02:21,240
about your friend’s future to
risk your present comfort for

42
00:02:21,240 –> 00:02:24,520
it.
That’s rare, and it’s worth

43
00:02:24,560 –> 00:02:28,000
intentionally cultivating.
It means being honest when

44
00:02:28,000 –> 00:02:31,600
honesty is needed, even when
it’s easier to just agree.

45
00:02:32,000 –> 00:02:35,400
It means showing up when things
are messy, not just when things

46
00:02:35,400 –> 00:02:37,560
are fun.
It means praying for your

47
00:02:37,560 –> 00:02:39,800
friends, not just hanging out
with them.

48
00:02:40,760 –> 00:02:42,840
And here’s the anchor under all
of this.

49
00:02:43,200 –> 00:02:45,760
The verse doesn’t just tell you
to find good friends.

50
00:02:46,200 –> 00:02:49,520
It points toward the friend who
sticks closer than any brother,

51
00:02:49,960 –> 00:02:53,640
because ultimately, no human
friendship, no matter how good,

52
00:02:54,000 –> 00:02:56,480
can fully carry the weight of
what our souls need.

53
00:02:56,960 –> 00:02:59,120
God’s friendship is the
foundation.

54
00:02:59,600 –> 00:03:02,560
Human friendship is the gift
that flows out of it.

55
00:03:03,480 –> 00:03:06,880
Build your circle carefully, Be
the kind of friend you want to

56
00:03:06,880 –> 00:03:10,400
have, and root all of it in the
One who never leaves.

57
00:03:11,280 –> 00:03:15,080
Let’s pray.
Heavenly Father, thank you for

58
00:03:15,080 –> 00:03:18,040
the gift of friendship and for
being the friend who sticks

59
00:03:18,040 –> 00:03:20,960
closer than anyone.
Help us to choose our close

60
00:03:20,960 –> 00:03:24,280
relationships wisely, to
recognize the people who

61
00:03:24,280 –> 00:03:27,480
genuinely want what’s best for
us, and to be that kind of

62
00:03:27,480 –> 00:03:30,680
friend to others.
In return, give us the courage

63
00:03:30,680 –> 00:03:34,280
to speak truth in love and the
loyalty to show up when things

64
00:03:34,280 –> 00:03:36,880
are hard.
Root all our friendships in you,

65
00:03:37,440 –> 00:03:42,600
in Jesus name, Amen.
What if the night was never

66
00:03:42,600 –> 00:03:46,000
meant to be ruled by fear, but
covered by the presence and

67
00:03:46,000 –> 00:03:48,920
authority of God?

Now I invite you to spend time
with God in today’s three-year

80
00:04:36,200 –> 00:04:41,680
Bible reading plan.
Proverbs chapter 18 verses 23 to

81
00:04:41,680 –> 00:04:46,640
24 world English Bible The poor
plead for mercy, but the rich

82
00:04:46,640 –> 00:04:50,320
answer harshly.
A man of many companions may be

83
00:04:50,320 –> 00:04:53,240
ruined, but there is a friend
who sticks closer than a

84
00:04:53,240 –> 00:04:57,040
brother.
First Samuel Chapter 29 World

85
00:04:57,040 –> 00:05:00,800
English Bible Now the
Philistines gathered together

86
00:05:00,880 –> 00:05:04,560
all their armies to effect, and
the Israelites encamped by the

87
00:05:04,560 –> 00:05:08,520
spring which is in Jezreel.
The Lords of the Philistines

88
00:05:08,520 –> 00:05:12,800
passed on by hundreds and by
thousands, and David and his men

89
00:05:12,800 –> 00:05:14,520
passed on in the rear with a
chish.

90
00:05:15,560 –> 00:05:18,200
Then the Princess of the
Philistines said, What about

91
00:05:18,200 –> 00:05:20,960
these Hebrews?
A chish said to the Princess of

92
00:05:20,960 –> 00:05:24,600
the Philistines, Isn’t this
David the servant of Saul the

93
00:05:24,600 –> 00:05:28,680
king of Israel, who has been
with me these days, or rather

94
00:05:28,680 –> 00:05:31,840
these years?
I have found no fault in him

95
00:05:31,840 –> 00:05:34,920
since he fell away until today,
but the Princess of the

96
00:05:34,920 –> 00:05:37,840
Philistines were angry with him,
and the Princess of the

97
00:05:37,840 –> 00:05:40,880
Philistines said to him, make
the man return.

98
00:05:41,880 –> 00:05:43,840
That he may go back.
To his place where you have

99
00:05:43,840 –> 00:05:47,720
appointed him, and let him not
go down with us to battle, lest

100
00:05:47,720 –> 00:05:50,000
in the battle he become an
adversary to us.

101
00:05:51,000 –> 00:05:54,040
For with what should this fellow
reconcile himself to his Lord?

102
00:05:54,480 –> 00:05:56,320
Should it not be with the heads
of these men?

103
00:05:57,400 –> 00:06:00,880
Isn’t this David, of whom people
sang to one another in dances,

104
00:06:00,880 –> 00:06:04,200
saying, Saul has slain his
thousands and David his ten

105
00:06:04,200 –> 00:06:07,200
thousands?
Then a chish called David and

106
00:06:07,200 –> 00:06:11,680
said to him, As Yahweh lives,
you have been upright, and

107
00:06:11,680 –> 00:06:13,560
you’re going out, and you’re
coming in with me.

108
00:06:13,560 –> 00:06:15,320
And the army is good in my
sight.

109
00:06:15,720 –> 00:06:18,640
For I have not found evil in you
since the day of your coming to

110
00:06:18,640 –> 00:06:21,440
me.
To this day, nevertheless, the

111
00:06:21,440 –> 00:06:24,720
Lords don’t favor you.
Therefore now return and go in

112
00:06:24,720 –> 00:06:27,640
peace, that you not displease
the Lords of the Philistines.

113
00:06:28,240 –> 00:06:30,840
David said to Achish.
But what have I done?

114
00:06:31,840 –> 00:06:34,280
What have you found in your
servants so long as I have been

115
00:06:34,280 –> 00:06:37,560
before you to this day, that I
may not go and fight against the

116
00:06:37,560 –> 00:06:42,560
enemies of my Lord the King?
Achish answered David, I know

117
00:06:42,560 –> 00:06:45,200
that you are good in my sight as
an Angel of God.

118
00:06:46,240 –> 00:06:49,600
Notwithstanding the Princess of
the Philistines have said he

119
00:06:49,600 –> 00:06:51,280
shall not go up with us to the
battle.

120
00:06:51,840 –> 00:06:55,200
Therefore now rise up early in
the morning with the servants of

121
00:06:55,200 –> 00:06:58,640
your Lord who have come with
you, and as soon as you are up

122
00:06:58,640 –> 00:07:01,160
early in the morning and have
light, depart.

123
00:07:01,760 –> 00:07:05,560
So David rose up early, he and
his men to depart in the morning

124
00:07:05,760 –> 00:07:09,920
to return into the land of the
Philistines, And the Philistines

125
00:07:09,920 –> 00:07:14,480
went up to Jezreel.
