“By the mouth of a fool comes a rod for his back, but the lips of the wise will preserve them. Where there are no oxen, the manger is clean, but abundant crops come by the strength of the ox.” — Proverbs 14:3–4 (ESV)

“For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?” — Mark 8:36 (ESV)

Have you ever said something and instantly wished you could take it back? We’ve all been there. Proverbs 14:3 reminds us that our words have power—foolish words can hurt us, but wise words protect us. And then Mark 8:36 hits us with the big question: what’s the point of having everything if we lose what truly matters—our soul, our character, our relationship with God?

It’s so easy to focus on chasing popularity, success, or stuff, but God calls us to something better. A clean manger might look nice (Proverbs 14:4), but it means nothing’s happening—no work, no growth, no life. Real growth takes work, patience, and choosing what lasts over what fades. The good news? With God’s help, your words, choices, and priorities can build something real and lasting.

________________________________________

THINK ABOUT IT

1. Words That Build: Are your words helping or hurting? What’s one way you can speak life into someone this week?

2. Real Success: How does Mark 8:36 challenge the way you think about success, popularity, or achievements?

3. Growth Takes Work: A full barn is messy but shows life and progress (Proverbs 14:4). What “messy” work is God calling you to do so you can grow spiritually?

BOTTOM LINE

A life that honors God values wise words, real growth, and what lasts longer than this world can offer.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding me that my words and choices matter. Help me to speak wisely, value what lasts, and not trade my soul for things that won’t satisfy. Teach me to embrace the work and growth You call me to so I can live a life that honors You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

1
00:00:02,440 –> 00:00:05,800
Welcome to Bible Chat, where we
have devotional conversations

2
00:00:06,120 –> 00:00:10,680
rooted in Scripture and relevant
for today, April 8th.

3
00:00:10,800 –> 00:00:14,760
Wise words, full hearts.
Words can leave a mark far

4
00:00:14,760 –> 00:00:18,120
longer than we expect.
A sentence spoken in anger can

5
00:00:18,120 –> 00:00:20,840
linger for days.
A careless comment can break

6
00:00:20,840 –> 00:00:23,640
trust.
But wise words can also protect,

7
00:00:23,720 –> 00:00:28,520
heal, and strengthen.
Proverbs chapter 14, verses 3 to

8
00:00:28,520 –> 00:00:32,200
4 reminds us that foolish speech
brings trouble, while the lips

9
00:00:32,200 –> 00:00:36,120
of the wise preserve them.
Then Jesus asks A piercing

10
00:00:36,120 –> 00:00:38,920
question in Mark chapter 8,
verse 36.

11
00:00:40,000 –> 00:00:42,800
What does it profit a man to
gain the whole world and forfeit

12
00:00:42,800 –> 00:00:45,520
his soul?
That question cuts through so

13
00:00:45,520 –> 00:00:47,520
much of what this world tells us
to chase.

14
00:00:48,600 –> 00:00:52,480
Gain the world, be noticed, be
admired, be successful, be

15
00:00:52,480 –> 00:00:55,120
impressive.
But Jesus says none of that is

16
00:00:55,120 –> 00:00:57,880
worth it if your soul is being
neglected in the process.

17
00:00:59,040 –> 00:01:02,080
And that connects with Proverbs
too, because what comes out of

18
00:01:02,080 –> 00:01:04,599
your mouth often reveals what is
filling your heart.

19
00:01:05,160 –> 00:01:08,080
Wise words flow from a heart
being shaped by what matters

20
00:01:08,080 –> 00:01:11,160
most.
Proverbs also says that where

21
00:01:11,160 –> 00:01:14,680
there are no oxen, the Manger is
clean, but abundant crops come

22
00:01:14,680 –> 00:01:18,080
by the strength of the ox.
In other words, real growth can

23
00:01:18,080 –> 00:01:20,440
be messy.
Real fruit takes work.

24
00:01:21,520 –> 00:01:24,520
You cannot build a meaningful
life by avoiding inconvenience.

25
00:01:24,920 –> 00:01:28,360
The same is true spiritually.
Growth in Christ requires

26
00:01:28,360 –> 00:01:31,200
humility, discipline,
repentance, and patience.

27
00:01:32,320 –> 00:01:35,600
It may not always look neat, but
it produces something real.

28
00:01:36,120 –> 00:01:38,720
A lot of people want the
appearance of success without

29
00:01:38,720 –> 00:01:42,040
the inner work of surrender.
But God is after something

30
00:01:42,040 –> 00:01:45,600
deeper than appearances.
He wants your heart to be full

31
00:01:45,600 –> 00:01:49,240
of truth, your words to reflect
His wisdom, and your priorities

32
00:01:49,240 –> 00:01:51,160
to be anchored in what lasts
forever.

33
00:01:51,680 –> 00:01:55,080
So pause today and ask yourself,
what am I really chasing?

34
00:01:56,200 –> 00:01:58,360
Is it shaping my soul in a
healthy way?

35
00:01:58,720 –> 00:02:01,800
Are my words helping reveal a
heart that belongs to Jesus?

36
00:02:02,280 –> 00:02:04,720
A full life is not found in
gaining everything.

37
00:02:05,160 –> 00:02:07,640
It is found in staying rooted in
what is eternal.

38
00:02:08,720 –> 00:02:11,480
Let’s pray.
Heavenly Father, thank you for

39
00:02:11,480 –> 00:02:14,160
reminding me that my soul
matters more than anything this

40
00:02:14,160 –> 00:02:17,520
world can offer.
Help me speak with wisdom.

41
00:02:17,880 –> 00:02:21,160
Live with eternal perspective
and embrace the growth you are

42
00:02:21,160 –> 00:02:23,600
doing in me, even when it feels
slow or messy.

43
00:02:24,680 –> 00:02:27,560
Guard my heart from chasing
empty things and fill my life

44
00:02:27,560 –> 00:02:30,840
with what truly lasts.
Let my words and choices reflect

45
00:02:30,840 –> 00:02:33,880
your truth today in Jesus name,
Amen.

46
00:02:38,200 –> 00:02:41,000
What if you could rise up and
declare with full spiritual

47
00:02:41,000 –> 00:02:43,600
authority, I shall not die, but
live?

00:03:39,000 –> 00:03:44,200
Bible reading plan.
Proverbs chapter 14, verses 3 to

68
00:03:44,200 –> 00:03:48,880
4 World English Bible The fool’s
talk brings a rod to his back,

69
00:03:49,080 –> 00:03:50,800
But the lips of the wise protect
them.

70
00:03:51,920 –> 00:03:54,240
Where no oxen are.
The crib is clean, but much

71
00:03:54,240 –> 00:03:56,120
increases by the strength of the
ox.

72
00:03:56,560 –> 00:04:01,480
Mark Chapter 8 World English
Bible In those days when there

73
00:04:01,480 –> 00:04:05,280
was a very great multitude and
they had nothing to eat, Jesus

74
00:04:05,280 –> 00:04:08,680
called his disciples to himself
and said to them, I have

75
00:04:08,680 –> 00:04:12,480
compassion on the multitude,
because they have stayed with me

76
00:04:12,480 –> 00:04:14,760
now three days and have nothing
to eat.

77
00:04:15,880 –> 00:04:18,920
If I send them away fasting to
their home, they will faint on

78
00:04:18,920 –> 00:04:21,399
the way, for some of them have
come a long way.

79
00:04:21,959 –> 00:04:26,200
His disciples answered him, From
where could one satisfy these

80
00:04:26,200 –> 00:04:28,400
people with bread?
Here in a deserted place?

81
00:04:28,800 –> 00:04:31,160
He asked them, How many loaves
do you have?

82
00:04:31,400 –> 00:04:35,160
They said seven.
He commanded the multitude to

83
00:04:35,160 –> 00:04:38,120
sit down on the ground and He
took the seven loaves.

84
00:04:39,200 –> 00:04:41,920
Having given thanks, He broke
them and gave them to His

85
00:04:41,920 –> 00:04:44,600
disciples to serve and they
served the multitude.

86
00:04:45,120 –> 00:04:48,760
They also had a few small fish.
Having blessed them, He said to

87
00:04:48,760 –> 00:04:52,160
serve these also.
They ate and were filled.

88
00:04:52,560 –> 00:04:55,880
They took up 7 baskets of broken
pieces that were leftover.

89
00:04:56,200 –> 00:04:58,320
Those who had eaten were about
4000.

90
00:04:58,680 –> 00:05:01,720
Then He sent them away.
Immediately.

91
00:05:01,720 –> 00:05:04,720
He entered into the boat with
His disciples and came into the

92
00:05:04,720 –> 00:05:08,280
region of Dalmanyuta.
The Pharisees came out and began

93
00:05:08,280 –> 00:05:11,400
to question Him, seeking from
Him a sign from heaven and

94
00:05:11,400 –> 00:05:14,640
testing him.
He sighed deeply in His spirit

95
00:05:14,640 –> 00:05:17,560
and said, Why does this
generation seek a sign?

96
00:05:18,680 –> 00:05:21,480
Most certainly I tell you, no
sign will be given to this

97
00:05:21,480 –> 00:05:24,640
generation.
He left them and again entering

98
00:05:24,640 –> 00:05:26,800
into the boat, departed to the
other side.

99
00:05:27,880 –> 00:05:30,920
They forgot to take bread, and
they didn’t have more than one

100
00:05:30,920 –> 00:05:34,520
loaf in the boat with them.
He warned them, saying, Take

101
00:05:34,520 –> 00:05:37,320
heed, beware of the yeast of the
Pharisees and the yeast of

102
00:05:37,320 –> 00:05:39,480
Herod.
They reason with one another,

103
00:05:39,480 –> 00:05:41,560
saying it’s because we have no
bread.

104
00:05:42,200 –> 00:05:46,280
Jesus, perceiving it, said to
them, Why do you reason that

105
00:05:46,280 –> 00:05:49,880
it’s because you have no bread?
Don’t you perceive yet or

106
00:05:49,880 –> 00:05:52,080
understand?
Is your heart still hardened?

107
00:05:52,400 –> 00:05:55,400
Having eyes, Don’t you see?
Having ears, don’t you hear?

108
00:05:55,440 –> 00:05:59,880
Don’t you remember when I broke
the five loaves among the 5000?

109
00:06:00,000 –> 00:06:02,800
How many baskets full of broken
pieces did you take up?

110
00:06:03,280 –> 00:06:08,600
They told him, 12 When the seven
loaves fed the 4000, how many

111
00:06:08,600 –> 00:06:11,040
baskets full of broken pieces
did you take up?

112
00:06:11,400 –> 00:06:14,080
They told him seven.
He asked them, don’t you

113
00:06:14,080 –> 00:06:16,280
understand yet?
He came to Bethsaida.

114
00:06:17,400 –> 00:06:20,320
They brought a blind man to him
and begged him to touch him.

115
00:06:20,880 –> 00:06:23,800
He took hold of the blind man by
the hand and brought him out of

116
00:06:23,800 –> 00:06:27,160
the village.
When he had spat on his eyes and

117
00:06:27,160 –> 00:06:30,240
laid his hands on him, he asked
him if he saw anything.

118
00:06:31,400 –> 00:06:34,640
He looked up and said, I see
men, but I see them like walking

119
00:06:34,640 –> 00:06:37,320
trees.
Then again he laid his hands on

120
00:06:37,320 –> 00:06:39,520
his eyes.
He looked intently and was

121
00:06:39,520 –> 00:06:41,520
restored and saw everyone
clearly.

122
00:06:42,560 –> 00:06:45,600
He sent him away to his house
saying, Don’t enter into the

123
00:06:45,600 –> 00:06:47,680
village nor tell anyone in the
village.

124
00:06:48,360 –> 00:06:51,360
Jesus went out with his
disciples into the villages of

125
00:06:51,360 –> 00:06:54,560
Caesarea Philippi.
On the way he asked his

126
00:06:54,560 –> 00:06:56,840
disciples, Who do men say that I
am?

127
00:06:57,160 –> 00:07:00,440
They told him, John the Baptizer
and others say Elijah, but

128
00:07:00,440 –> 00:07:04,680
others one of the prophets.
He said to them, But who do you

129
00:07:04,680 –> 00:07:07,120
say that I am?
Peter answered, You are the

130
00:07:07,120 –> 00:07:09,120
Christ.
He commanded them that they

131
00:07:09,120 –> 00:07:12,840
should tell no one about him.
He began to teach them that the

132
00:07:12,840 –> 00:07:16,320
Son of Man must suffer many
things and be rejected by the

133
00:07:16,320 –> 00:07:20,120
elders, the chief priests and
the scribes, and be killed, and

134
00:07:20,120 –> 00:07:24,200
after three days rise again.
He spoke to them openly.

135
00:07:24,600 –> 00:07:28,120
Peter took him and began to
rebuke him, but he, turning

136
00:07:28,120 –> 00:07:31,680
around and seeing his disciples,
rebuked Peter and said, Get

137
00:07:31,680 –> 00:07:35,920
behind me, Satan, for you have
in mind not the things of God,

138
00:07:35,960 –> 00:07:38,760
but the things of men.
He called the multitude to

139
00:07:38,760 –> 00:07:42,240
himself with his disciples, and
said to them, Whoever wants to

140
00:07:42,240 –> 00:07:46,720
come after me, let him deny
himself and take up his cross

141
00:07:46,720 –> 00:07:49,960
and follow me.
For whoever wants to save his

142
00:07:49,960 –> 00:07:53,520
life will lose it, and whoever
will lose his life for my sake

143
00:07:53,760 –> 00:07:55,680
and the sake of the good news,
will save it.

144
00:07:56,840 –> 00:07:59,840
For what does it profit a man to
gain the whole world and forfeit

145
00:07:59,840 –> 00:08:02,040
his life?
For what will a man give in

146
00:08:02,040 –> 00:08:05,600
exchange for his life?
For whoever will be ashamed of

147
00:08:05,600 –> 00:08:08,480
me and of my words in this
adulterous and sinful

148
00:08:08,480 –> 00:08:12,560
generation, the Son of Man also
will be ashamed of him when he

149
00:08:12,560 –> 00:08:15,120
comes in his Father’s glory with
the holy angels.
