“Before destruction a man’s heart is haughty, but humility comes before honor.” — Proverbs 18:12 (ESV)
“And David inquired of the Lord, ‘Shall I go and attack these Philistines?’ The Lord said to him, ‘Go and attack them.’ So David went to Keilah and saved the inhabitants of the city.” — 1 Samuel 23:2–3 (ESV)
“Save me, O God, by your name, and vindicate me by your might. O God, hear my prayer; give ear to the words of my mouth.” — Psalm 54:1–2 (ESV)

It’s easy to think we’ve got life all figured out, especially when things are going well. But Proverbs 18:12 warns that pride often comes before a fall. Even someone like David, who was chosen by God to be king, had moments where he needed guidance and protection. In 1 Samuel 23, David could have acted on his own, but he inquired of the Lord first, and God’s wisdom led him to save a city from danger. And in Psalm 54, we see that when danger and threats surround us, the right response is to call on God for help, trusting His power rather than our own strength.
Life throws challenges our way—pressure from peers, difficult decisions at school, or unexpected conflicts at home. It’s tempting to rely on our own understanding, but God’s way is always wiser. Humility opens the door to honor, guidance, and protection, while pride can blind us to danger.

THINK ABOUT IT
1. Check Your Heart: Are there areas where pride is influencing your choices? How can humility change the outcome of a situation (Proverbs 18:12)?
2. Seek God’s Guidance: Like David, do you ask God before making important decisions (1 Samuel 23:2–3)? How does relying on Him change the way you act?
3. Call on God in Trouble: When you feel threatened, anxious, or overwhelmed, how can turning to God in prayer (Psalm 54:1–2) help you find peace and direction?

BOTTOM LINE
Humility and reliance on God protect you from pride and guide you through life’s challenges.

00:00:02,480 –> 00:00:05,800
Welcome to Bible Chat, where we
have devotional conversations
2
00:00:06,120 –> 00:00:12,240
rooted in scripture and relevant
for today, June 21st, when pride
3
00:00:12,240 –> 00:00:16,200
meets reality.
Have you ever been in a season
4
00:00:16,200 –> 00:00:18,200
where everything seemed to be
going your way?
5
00:00:18,600 –> 00:00:22,120
Things were clicking.
You felt confident, maybe even
6
00:00:22,120 –> 00:00:24,680
untouchable.
And then something happened that
7
00:00:24,680 –> 00:00:27,840
reminded you just how much you
don’t actually have figured out.
8
00:00:28,360 –> 00:00:32,159
That sudden drop from confidence
to confusion is one of the most
9
00:00:32,159 –> 00:00:34,880
humbling experiences a person
can have.
10
00:00:35,400 –> 00:00:39,080
And it’s not always bad.
Sometimes it’s exactly what we
11
00:00:39,080 –> 00:00:42,600
need.
Proverbs chapter 18, verse 12
12
00:00:42,600 –> 00:00:47,000
says before destruction, a man’s
heart is haughty, but humility
13
00:00:47,000 –> 00:00:50,240
comes before honor.
That’s not just a proverb.
14
00:00:50,440 –> 00:00:53,360
That’s a pattern you can see
repeated throughout history and
15
00:00:53,360 –> 00:00:56,160
throughout your own life.
If you look honestly, pride
16
00:00:56,160 –> 00:00:57,960
doesn’t announce itself as
pride.
17
00:00:58,400 –> 00:01:01,880
It usually feels like
confidence, clarity, maybe even
18
00:01:01,880 –> 00:01:04,280
wisdom.
But when it’s operating without
19
00:01:04,280 –> 00:01:07,240
God at the center, it creates
blind spots.
20
00:01:07,680 –> 00:01:12,160
And blind spots are dangerous.
David understood this more than
21
00:01:12,160 –> 00:01:15,520
almost anyone.
He was chosen by God to be king.
22
00:01:16,040 –> 00:01:18,280
He was anointed, gifted, and
favored.
23
00:01:18,760 –> 00:01:23,440
And yet in first Samuel chapter
23, verses 2 and three, before
24
00:01:23,440 –> 00:01:27,200
going into a dangerous battle,
David didn’t charge ahead on his
25
00:01:27,200 –> 00:01:31,160
own confidence.
He asked, shall I go and attack
26
00:01:31,160 –> 00:01:34,280
these Philistines?
He checked in with God before he
27
00:01:34,280 –> 00:01:38,480
made a move, and God said yes.
And because David went with
28
00:01:38,480 –> 00:01:42,440
God’s directive rather than just
his own impulse, he saved an
29
00:01:42,440 –> 00:01:45,640
entire city.
That’s the pattern that leads to
30
00:01:45,640 –> 00:01:47,280
honor.
Not the path where you
31
00:01:47,280 –> 00:01:50,640
demonstrate how capable you are,
but the path where you
32
00:01:50,640 –> 00:01:54,080
consistently turn to God and
say, what do you want me to do
33
00:01:54,080 –> 00:01:56,480
here?
That’s the kind of humility that
34
00:01:56,480 –> 00:01:58,640
protects you from your own blind
spots.
35
00:01:59,600 –> 00:02:03,440
And then when danger came again,
threats closing in, people
36
00:02:03,440 –> 00:02:07,600
turning against him, betrayal on
multiple sides, David turned to
37
00:02:07,600 –> 00:02:10,880
Psalm 54, verses one and two
with one of the most honest
38
00:02:10,880 –> 00:02:12,840
prayers you’ll find in all of
Scripture.
39
00:02:13,600 –> 00:02:17,560
Save me, oh God, by your name,
and vindicate me by your might,
40
00:02:18,040 –> 00:02:21,080
Oh God, hear my prayer.
Give ear to the words of my
41
00:02:21,080 –> 00:02:24,040
mouth.
He didn’t go on social media to
42
00:02:24,040 –> 00:02:26,960
defend himself.
He didn’t scheme his way out.
43
00:02:27,480 –> 00:02:31,840
He prayed versed.
He took his situation to God
44
00:02:32,120 –> 00:02:33,960
before trying to manage it
himself.
45
00:02:34,920 –> 00:02:39,000
That combination, seeking God’s
guidance before acting and
46
00:02:39,000 –> 00:02:41,960
seeking God’s help when
threatened, is the antidote to
47
00:02:41,960 –> 00:02:44,200
pride.
It’s not weakness.
48
00:02:44,640 –> 00:02:48,160
It’s actually the most strategic
thing you can do because it
49
00:02:48,160 –> 00:02:51,520
keeps you connected to the
wisest, most powerful source of
50
00:02:51,520 –> 00:02:55,280
guidance that exists.
For young people especially,
51
00:02:55,480 –> 00:02:58,800
this matters in the everyday
moments, the test you feel
52
00:02:58,800 –> 00:03:02,480
totally prepared for.
Did you ask God for wisdom or
53
00:03:02,480 –> 00:03:05,640
just lean on how much you
studied the decision you’re
54
00:03:05,640 –> 00:03:08,760
confident about?
Did you pray about it or just go
55
00:03:08,760 –> 00:03:11,600
with your gut?
The relationship situation you
56
00:03:11,600 –> 00:03:14,880
think you’ve got figured out?
Have you actually sought God’s
57
00:03:14,880 –> 00:03:18,280
perspective?
Humility doesn’t mean thinking
58
00:03:18,280 –> 00:03:21,360
less of yourself.
It means being honest about what
59
00:03:21,360 –> 00:03:25,440
you know and what you don’t and
consistently inviting God into
60
00:03:25,440 –> 00:03:28,240
the gap.
It means asking before acting.
61
00:03:28,680 –> 00:03:32,080
It means trusting His direction
even when your own instincts
62
00:03:32,080 –> 00:03:35,240
feel strong.
And the beautiful promise?
63
00:03:35,680 –> 00:03:39,520
Humility comes before honor when
you choose it consistently.
64
00:03:39,760 –> 00:03:43,400
God lifts you in His timing, in
His way, in ways that actually
65
00:03:43,400 –> 00:03:48,400
last.
Let’s pray, Heavenly Father help
66
00:03:48,400 –> 00:03:51,560
us to recognize the places where
pride is operating in our
67
00:03:51,560 –> 00:03:55,160
hearts, even when it disguises
itself as confidence.
68
00:03:55,600 –> 00:03:59,000
Teach us to seek Your guidance
before we act, not just when
69
00:03:59,000 –> 00:04:02,760
things fall apart.
Like David, may we ask you first
70
00:04:03,000 –> 00:04:06,760
in decisions big and small, and
trust that your wisdom is always
71
00:04:06,760 –> 00:04:10,000
better than ours.
Strengthen our faith so we can
72
00:04:10,000 –> 00:04:13,080
rely on your protection and
direction every single day.
73
00:04:13,560 –> 00:04:19,000
In Jesus name, Amen.
What if the road ahead is not
74
00:04:19,000 –> 00:04:22,160
meant to be rushed, feared, or
walked alone?
75
00:04:22,680 –> 00:04:25,920
Going with God is a prayer
script series for believers who
76
00:04:25,920 –> 00:04:28,200

00:05:10,440 –> 00:05:15,520
Bible reading plan.
Proverbs chapter 18 Verse 12
89
00:05:15,880 –> 00:05:19,320
World English Bible Before
destruction the heart of man is
90
00:05:19,320 –> 00:05:21,640
proud, but before honor is
humility.
91
00:05:22,200 –> 00:05:27,800
First Samuel Chapter 23 World
English Bible David was told,
92
00:05:28,000 –> 00:05:31,240
Behold the Philistines are
fighting against Kayla and are
93
00:05:31,240 –> 00:05:34,960
robbing the thrashing floors.
Therefore David inquired of
94
00:05:34,960 –> 00:05:39,040
Yahweh saying, shall I go and
strike these Philistines?
95
00:05:39,240 –> 00:05:42,920
Yahweh said to David, Go strike
the Philistines and save Kayla.
96
00:05:43,560 –> 00:05:48,440
David’s men said to him, Behold,
we are afraid here in Judah, how
97
00:05:48,440 –> 00:05:51,280
much more than if we go to Kayla
against the armies of the
98
00:05:51,280 –> 00:05:54,720
Philistines.
Then David inquired of Yahweh.
99
00:05:54,720 –> 00:05:59,280
Yet again Yahweh answered him
and said, Arise, go down to
100
00:05:59,280 –> 00:06:02,280
Kayla, for I will deliver the
Philistines into your hand.
101
00:06:02,960 –> 00:06:06,320
David and his men went to Kayla
and fought with the Philistines
102
00:06:07,360 –> 00:06:10,040
and brought away their livestock
and killed them with a great
103
00:06:10,040 –> 00:06:13,400
slaughter.
So David saved the inhabitants
104
00:06:13,400 –> 00:06:15,760
of Kayla.
When Abiathar, the son of
105
00:06:15,760 –> 00:06:19,120
Aheimletch, fled to David, to
Kayla, he came down with an
106
00:06:19,120 –> 00:06:22,480
ephod in his hand.
Saul was told that David had
107
00:06:22,480 –> 00:06:26,200
come to Kayla.
Saul said, God has delivered him
108
00:06:26,200 –> 00:06:29,800
into my hand, for he is shut in.
By entering into a town that has
109
00:06:29,800 –> 00:06:33,240
gates and bars.
Saul summoned all the people to
110
00:06:33,240 –> 00:06:37,760
war, to go down to Kayla, to
besiege David and his men.
111
00:06:38,880 –> 00:06:41,640
David knew that Saul was
devising mischief against him,
112
00:06:41,920 –> 00:06:45,120
and he said to Abiathar the
priest, bring the ephod here.
113
00:06:45,720 –> 00:06:50,680
Then David said, O Yahweh, the
God of Israel, your servant has
114
00:06:50,680 –> 00:06:54,160
surely heard that Saul seeks to
come to Kayla to destroy the
115
00:06:54,160 –> 00:06:57,200
city for my sake.
Will the men of Kayla.
116
00:06:57,200 –> 00:07:00,360
Deliver me up into his hand.
Will Saul come down?
117
00:07:00,480 –> 00:07:04,640
As your servant has heard
Yahweh, the God of Israel, I beg
118
00:07:04,640 –> 00:07:08,920
you, tell your servant Yahweh
said he will come down then,
119
00:07:08,920 –> 00:07:10,880
David said.
Will the men of Kayla.
120
00:07:10,880 –> 00:07:13,240
Deliver me and my men into the
hand of Saul.
121
00:07:13,400 –> 00:07:16,240
Yahweh said.
They will deliver you up.
122
00:07:16,840 –> 00:07:21,000
Then David and his men, who were
about 600, arose and departed
123
00:07:21,000 –> 00:07:23,200
out of Kayla and went wherever
they could go.
124
00:07:24,200 –> 00:07:27,800
Saul was told that David was
escaped from Kayla and he gave
125
00:07:27,800 –> 00:07:30,680
up going there.
David stayed in the wilderness
126
00:07:30,680 –> 00:07:33,720
in the strongholds, and remained
in the Hill Country in the
127
00:07:33,720 –> 00:07:37,760
wilderness of Ziff.
Saul sought him every day, but
128
00:07:37,760 –> 00:07:39,760
God didn’t deliver him into his
hand.
129
00:07:40,240 –> 00:07:42,880
David saw that Saul had come out
to seek his life.
130
00:07:43,320 –> 00:07:45,880
David was in the wilderness of
Ziff in the wood.
131
00:07:46,920 –> 00:07:50,200
Jonathan, Saul’s son, arose and
went to David into the.
132
00:07:50,200 –> 00:07:53,760
Woods and.
Strengthened his hand in God, he
133
00:07:53,760 –> 00:07:57,040
said to him, Don’t be afraid for
the hand of Saul.
134
00:07:57,040 –> 00:07:58,800
My father won’t find you.
And.
135
00:07:58,800 –> 00:08:02,560
You will be king over Israel,
and I will be next to you and
136
00:08:02,560 –> 00:08:04,280
Saul.
My father knows that also.
137
00:08:04,760 –> 00:08:06,760
They both made a covenant before
Yahweh.
138
00:08:07,800 –> 00:08:11,200
Then David stayed in the woods
and Jonathan went to his house.
139
00:08:12,240 –> 00:08:16,120
Then the Ziphytes came up to
Saul, to Jiba, saying, doesn’t
140
00:08:16,120 –> 00:08:19,080
David hide himself with us in
the strongholds, in the woods,
141
00:08:19,280 –> 00:08:22,120
in the hill of Hakala, which is
on the South of the desert?
142
00:08:23,160 –> 00:08:27,560
Now therefore, O king, come down
according to all the desire of
143
00:08:27,560 –> 00:08:30,760
your soul to come down, and our
part will be to deliver him up
144
00:08:30,760 –> 00:08:34,240
into the King’s hand.
Saul said You are blessed by
145
00:08:34,240 –> 00:08:36,679
Yahweh, for you have had
compassion on me.
146
00:08:37,640 –> 00:08:41,159
Please go make yet more sure and
know and see his place where his
147
00:08:41,159 –> 00:08:44,680
haunt is, and who has seen him
there, for I have been told that
148
00:08:44,680 –> 00:08:48,280
he is very cunning.
See therefore, and take
149
00:08:48,280 –> 00:08:51,160
knowledge of all the lurking
places where he hides himself,
150
00:08:51,560 –> 00:08:54,280
and come again to me with
certainty, and I will go with
151
00:08:54,280 –> 00:08:57,160
you.
It shall happen, if he is in the
152
00:08:57,160 –> 00:09:00,120
land, that I will search him out
among all the thousands of
153
00:09:00,120 –> 00:09:03,000
Judah.
They arose and went to Ziff
154
00:09:03,000 –> 00:09:06,360
before Saul, but David and his
men were in the wilderness of
155
00:09:06,360 –> 00:09:10,080
Mound in the Araba on the South
of the desert.
156
00:09:11,080 –> 00:09:12,760
Saul and his men went to seek
him.
157
00:09:13,240 –> 00:09:16,440
When David was told, he went
down to the rock and stayed in
158
00:09:16,440 –> 00:09:19,880
the wilderness of Mound.
When Saul heard that, he pursued
159
00:09:19,880 –> 00:09:21,600
David in the wilderness of
Mound.
160
00:09:22,600 –> 00:09:25,960
Saul went on this side of the
mountain, and David and his men
161
00:09:25,960 –> 00:09:29,200
on that side of the mountain,
And David hurried to get away
162
00:09:29,200 –> 00:09:33,080
for fear of Saul.
For Saul and his men surrounded
163
00:09:33,080 –> 00:09:37,720
David and his men to take them.
But a messenger came to Saul
164
00:09:37,720 –> 00:09:41,360
saying, Hurry and come, for the
Philistines have made a raid on
165
00:09:41,360 –> 00:09:44,280
the land.
So Saul returned from pursuing
166
00:09:44,280 –> 00:09:46,480
David and went against the
Philistines.
167
00:09:47,480 –> 00:09:50,000
Therefore they called that place
Selahemolekoth.
168
00:09:50,480 –> 00:09:53,080
David went up from there and
lived in the strongholds of
169
00:09:53,080 –> 00:09:56,800
Njetty.
Psalm Chapter 54 World English
170
00:09:56,800 –> 00:10:01,800
Bible Save me God, by your name.
Vindicate me in your might.
171
00:10:02,160 –> 00:10:05,760
Hear my prayer, God, listen to
the words of my mouth, for
172
00:10:05,760 –> 00:10:07,520
strangers have risen up against
me.
173
00:10:07,960 –> 00:10:10,080
Violent men have sought after my
soul.
174
00:10:10,320 –> 00:10:12,080
They haven’t set God before
them.
175
00:10:13,160 –> 00:10:16,880
Behold, God is my helper.
The Lord is the one who sustains
176
00:10:16,880 –> 00:10:19,440
my soul.
He will repay the evil to my
177
00:10:19,440 –> 00:10:22,040
enemies.
Destroy them in your truth with
178
00:10:22,040 –> 00:10:24,320
a free will offering I will
sacrifice to you.
179
00:10:25,480 –> 00:10:29,000
I will give thanks to your name
Yahweh, for it is good, for He
180
00:10:29,000 –> 00:10:32,480
has delivered me out of all
trouble my eye has seen triumph
181
00:10:32,480 –> 00:10:35,760
over my enemies.
Thanks.
