APRIL 17 – The Company You Keep
3-Year-Bible Reading: Proverbs 14:20; Romans 1

“The poor is disliked even by his neighbor, but the rich has many friends.” — Proverbs 14:20 (ESV)
“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth… For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him.” — Romans 1:18, 21–22 (ESV)
________________________________________
Have you ever noticed how some people seem to attract friends only when things are going well, while others struggle to find anyone who sticks around in hard times? Proverbs 14:20 points out a harsh reality: wealth, popularity, or outward success can attract friends, but true relationships are rare when circumstances get tough. Romans 1 warns that turning away from God—or ignoring His truth—can lead us down paths that harm not only us but also those around us.
For teens especially, peer pressure and the desire to “fit in” can be intense. It’s easy to chase popularity or try to impress others, but these pursuits can leave us empty or even influence us to make choices that go against God’s ways. God calls us to honor Him and live righteously, even if it means standing alone sometimes. True friendships and community aren’t just about who’s around when life is easy—they’re about growing together in truth, integrity, and faith.

THINK ABOUT IT
1. Friendship Check: Are your closest friends encouraging you to honor God, or do they pressure you to compromise your values?
2. Your Influence: How can your choices and behavior reflect God’s truth to those around you, even if it’s not “popular”?
3. Priorities Matter: Are you more focused on gaining approval from people or seeking God’s approval in your daily life?
________________________________________
BOTTOM LINE
True friendship and influence come from living in God’s truth, not chasing popularity or outward success.

PRAYER
Heavenly Father, thank You for being a friend who never leaves me, no matter my circumstances. Help me to honor You in the choices I make and to surround myself with people who encourage me to follow Your ways. Give me courage to stand for what is right, even when it’s hard or unpopular, and help me reflect Your love and truth to everyone around me. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
00:00:02,440 –> 00:00:05,800
Welcome to Bible Chat, where we
have devotional conversations
2
00:00:06,120 –> 00:00:11,200
rooted in Scripture and relevant
for today, April 17th.
3
00:00:11,640 –> 00:00:14,360
The company you keep.
One of the hardest truths to
4
00:00:14,360 –> 00:00:17,040
accept is that some
relationships are built more on
5
00:00:17,040 –> 00:00:21,320
convenience than love.
Proverbs chapter 14 verse 20
6
00:00:21,320 –> 00:00:25,160
says the poor is disliked even
by his neighbor, but the rich
7
00:00:25,160 –> 00:00:28,400
has many friends.
It is an honest observation
8
00:00:28,400 –> 00:00:32,159
about human nature.
People are often drawn to what
9
00:00:32,159 –> 00:00:35,800
benefits them.
Popularity, status, success, and
10
00:00:35,800 –> 00:00:39,280
influence can attract a crowd,
but not every crowd is made of
11
00:00:39,280 –> 00:00:42,200
true friends.
Romans chapter one goes even
12
00:00:42,200 –> 00:00:45,040
deeper.
It shows what happens when
13
00:00:45,040 –> 00:00:47,680
people know truth but refuse to
honor God.
14
00:00:48,280 –> 00:00:51,920
Hearts become darkened,
priorities become twisted, and
15
00:00:51,920 –> 00:00:54,400
people begin to call normal what
God calls broken.
16
00:00:55,520 –> 00:00:58,320
That matters when we think about
friendships and influence
17
00:00:58,640 –> 00:01:01,240
because the company you keep
will shape what starts to feel
18
00:01:01,240 –> 00:01:03,920
acceptable to you.
We all want to belong.
19
00:01:05,040 –> 00:01:07,760
We all want people who
understand us and stay close.
20
00:01:08,160 –> 00:01:10,760
But not every friendship is
healthy just because it is
21
00:01:10,760 –> 00:01:13,280
familiar.
Some relationships push you
22
00:01:13,280 –> 00:01:16,400
toward compromise.
Some make sin feel casual.
23
00:01:17,440 –> 00:01:19,840
Some train you to chase approval
instead of truth.
24
00:01:20,360 –> 00:01:22,840
Others strengthen your faith,
sharpen your thinking, and
25
00:01:22,840 –> 00:01:26,360
encourage your love for God.
The question is not just who
26
00:01:26,360 –> 00:01:29,520
likes me.
The deeper question is who is
27
00:01:29,520 –> 00:01:32,560
helping me become more faithful?
Who is drawing me toward
28
00:01:32,560 –> 00:01:34,880
honesty, purity, courage, and
worship?
29
00:01:36,040 –> 00:01:39,440
And just as important, what kind
of influence am I becoming in
30
00:01:39,440 –> 00:01:43,000
the lives of others?
Following Jesus sometimes means
31
00:01:43,000 –> 00:01:47,240
you will not fit in everywhere.
It may even mean standing apart
32
00:01:47,240 –> 00:01:49,800
from people whose values do not
align with His.
33
00:01:50,360 –> 00:01:53,080
That can feel lonely for a
moment, but it protects your
34
00:01:53,080 –> 00:01:56,640
heart from drifting.
God never asks you to trade
35
00:01:56,640 –> 00:01:59,960
truth for acceptance.
True friendship is not built on
36
00:01:59,960 –> 00:02:03,080
status.
It is built on truth, loyalty,
37
00:02:03,240 –> 00:02:06,360
and the kind of love that stays
steady even when life gets hard.
38
00:02:07,440 –> 00:02:10,320
Ask God to surround you with
people who help you honor Him,
39
00:02:10,600 –> 00:02:12,960
and ask Him to make you that
kind of person, too.
40
00:02:13,480 –> 00:02:16,160
Let’s pray.
Heavenly Father, thank you for
41
00:02:16,160 –> 00:02:17,920
being the friend who never
leaves me.
42
00:02:18,960 –> 00:02:21,800
Give me wisdom in my
relationships and help me
43
00:02:21,800 –> 00:02:24,920
recognize the difference between
shallow approval and godly
44
00:02:24,920 –> 00:02:27,920
friendship.
Surround me with people who
45
00:02:27,920 –> 00:02:31,320
encourage me to honor You and
make me a person who reflects
46
00:02:31,320 –> 00:02:34,120
Your truth, love, and
faithfulness to others.
47
00:02:35,200 –> 00:02:37,600
Help me care more about your
approval than the approval of
48
00:02:37,600 –> 00:02:40,600
the crowd.
In Jesus name, Amen.
49
00:02:44,960 –> 00:02:47,720
What if you could rise up and
declare with full spiritual
50
00:02:47,720 –> 00:02:50,360
authority, I shall not die, but
live?

Jesus Christ.
To all who are in Rome, beloved
84
00:04:38,560 –> 00:04:42,360
of God, called to be Saints,
grace to you and peace from God
85
00:04:42,360 –> 00:04:45,880
our Father and the Lord Jesus
Christ. 1st.
86
00:04:45,920 –> 00:04:49,200
I thank my God through Jesus
Christ for all of you, that your
87
00:04:49,200 –> 00:04:51,480
faith is proclaimed throughout
the whole world.
88
00:04:52,560 –> 00:04:55,960
For God is my witness, whom I
serve in my spirit in the good
89
00:04:55,960 –> 00:04:59,040
news of His Son.
How unceasingly I make mention
90
00:04:59,040 –> 00:05:03,600
of you always in my prayers,
requesting if by any means now
91
00:05:03,600 –> 00:05:07,000
at last I may be prospered by
the will of God to come to you.
92
00:05:08,160 –> 00:05:11,400
For I long to see you that I may
impart to you some spiritual
93
00:05:11,400 –> 00:05:15,480
gift to the end that you may be
established, that is, that I
94
00:05:15,480 –> 00:05:18,400
with you, may be encouraged in
you, each of us, by the other’s
95
00:05:18,400 –> 00:05:23,760
faith, both yours and mine.
Now I don’t desire to have you
96
00:05:23,760 –> 00:05:27,240
unaware, brothers, that I often
plan to come to you, and was
97
00:05:27,240 –> 00:05:30,920
hindered so far that I might
have some fruit among you also,
98
00:05:31,120 –> 00:05:33,160
even as among the rest of the
Gentiles.
99
00:05:34,280 –> 00:05:37,840
I am debtor both to Greeks and
to foreigners, both to the wise
100
00:05:37,840 –> 00:05:41,080
and to the foolish.
So as much as is in me, I am
101
00:05:41,080 –> 00:05:43,920
eager to preach the good news to
you also who are in Rome.
102
00:05:45,080 –> 00:05:48,480
For I am not ashamed of the good
news of Christ, because it is
103
00:05:48,480 –> 00:05:52,080
the power of God for salvation
for everyone who believes, for
104
00:05:52,080 –> 00:05:54,240
the Jew 1st, and also for the
Greek.
105
00:05:55,320 –> 00:05:57,960
For in it is revealed God’s
righteousness from faith to
106
00:05:57,960 –> 00:06:01,920
faith, as it is written.
But the righteous shall live by
107
00:06:01,920 –> 00:06:04,720
faith.
For the wrath of God is revealed
108
00:06:04,720 –> 00:06:08,000
from heaven against all
ungodliness and unrighteousness
109
00:06:08,000 –> 00:06:12,360
of men who suppress the truth in
unrighteousness, because that
110
00:06:12,360 –> 00:06:15,280
which is known of God is
revealed in them, for God
111
00:06:15,280 –> 00:06:18,920
revealed it to them.
For the invisible things of Him
112
00:06:19,040 –> 00:06:22,120
since the creation of the world
are clearly seen, being
113
00:06:22,120 –> 00:06:25,000
perceived through the things
that are made, even His
114
00:06:25,000 –> 00:06:29,520
everlasting power and divinity,
that they may be without excuse.
115
00:06:30,600 –> 00:06:34,280
Because knowing God, they didn’t
glorify Him as God and didn’t
116
00:06:34,280 –> 00:06:37,440
give thanks, but became vain in
their reasoning, and their
117
00:06:37,440 –> 00:06:41,320
senseless heart was darkened.
Professing themselves to be
118
00:06:41,320 –> 00:06:44,800
wise, they became fools and
traded the glory of the
119
00:06:44,800 –> 00:06:47,320
incorruptible God for the
likeness of an image of
120
00:06:47,320 –> 00:06:52,600
corruptible man and of birds, 4
footed animals and creeping
121
00:06:52,600 –> 00:06:56,040
things.
Therefore God also gave them up
122
00:06:56,040 –> 00:06:59,160
in the lusts of their hearts to
uncleanness, that their bodies
123
00:06:59,160 –> 00:07:02,200
should be dishonored among
themselves, who exchanged the
124
00:07:02,200 –> 00:07:05,960
truth of God for a lie, and
worshipped and served the
125
00:07:05,960 –> 00:07:08,920
creature rather than the
Creator, who is blessed forever.
126
00:07:10,080 –> 00:07:12,680
Amen.
For this reason God gave them up
127
00:07:12,680 –> 00:07:14,920
to vile passions for their
women.
128
00:07:14,920 –> 00:07:18,040
Change the natural function into
that which is against nature.
129
00:07:19,120 –> 00:07:22,160
Likewise also the men leaving
the natural function of the
130
00:07:22,160 –> 00:07:24,720
woman burned in their lust
toward one another.
131
00:07:25,160 –> 00:07:29,000
Men doing what is inappropriate
with men, and receiving in
132
00:07:29,000 –> 00:07:33,560
themselves the due penalty of
their error, even as they refuse
133
00:07:33,560 –> 00:07:36,720
to have God in their knowledge.
God gave them up to a reprobate
134
00:07:36,720 –> 00:07:40,440
mind to do those things which
are not fitting, being filled
135
00:07:40,440 –> 00:07:44,960
with all unrighteousness, sexual
immorality, wickedness,
136
00:07:44,960 –> 00:07:48,720
covetousness, malice, full of
envy, murder, strife, deceit,
137
00:07:48,800 –> 00:07:52,200
evil habits, secret slanderers,
backbutters, hateful to God,
138
00:07:52,360 –> 00:07:55,680
insolent, arrogant, boastful,
inventors of evil things,
139
00:07:56,800 –> 00:08:00,360
disobedient to parents without
understanding, covenant Breakers
140
00:08:00,360 –> 00:08:03,320
without natural affection,
unforgiving, unmerciful.
141
00:08:03,800 –> 00:08:08,040
Who, knowing the ordinance of
God that those who practice such
142
00:08:08,040 –> 00:08:11,840
things are worthy of death, not
only do the same but also
143
00:08:11,840 –> 00:08:13,440
approve of those who practice
them.
