“Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.” — Proverbs 16:18 (ESV)

“Break the teeth in their mouths, O God! Break the jaws of the lions, O Lord!” — Psalm 58:6 (ESV)

“For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.” — Galatians 5:13 (ESV)

Teen life can feel like a battlefield sometimes. Between school, friendships, social media, and family, it’s easy to let pride sneak in—thinking you have to prove yourself or be “better than” everyone else. Proverbs 16:18 warns that pride can lead to a fall, and Psalm 58 paints a picture of how destructive anger and bitterness can become if we let them take control. But Galatians 5 gives us a better path: freedom in Christ isn’t about showing off, it’s about serving others in love.

Imagine freedom as a superpower—it’s tempting to use it for selfish gain or to win arguments. But when we choose humility and let love guide our actions, that “power” builds people up instead of tearing them down. Small choices matter: a kind word, resisting gossip, or stepping in to help someone who’s struggling. These daily decisions shape your character far more than popularity or getting your way.

THINK ABOUT IT

1. Check Your Pride: When was the last time pride influenced a choice you made? How might humility change the outcome (Proverbs 16:18)?

2. Handle Anger Wisely: How do you respond when someone hurts or provokes you? Could prayer or self-control transform a tense moment (Psalm 58:6)?

3. Use Freedom for Good: In what ways can you use your freedom in Christ to serve others rather than satisfy selfish desires (Galatians 5:13)?

BOTTOM LINE

True freedom comes from humility and love, not pride or self-interest—choose to serve others and grow in Christ.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, thank You for the freedom I have in Christ. Help me resist pride and control my anger, choosing humility and love instead. Teach me to use my words and actions to serve others and reflect Your heart every day. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

00:00:02,440 –> 00:00:05,800
Welcome to Bible Chat, where we
have devotional conversations

2
00:00:06,120 –> 00:00:08,280
rooted in Scripture and relevant
for today.

3
00:00:10,280 –> 00:00:14,920
May 24th Pride, Power and
purpose Let’s be honest, pride

4
00:00:14,920 –> 00:00:17,360
is sneaky.
It doesn’t always show up as

5
00:00:17,360 –> 00:00:20,840
loud arrogance or showing off.
Sometimes it looks like needing

6
00:00:20,840 –> 00:00:24,440
to be right in an argument.
Sometimes it looks like

7
00:00:24,440 –> 00:00:27,760
dismissing someone else’s idea
before you’ve really heard it.

8
00:00:28,320 –> 00:00:31,360
Sometimes it looks like that
quiet resentment when someone

9
00:00:31,360 –> 00:00:33,440
else gets the recognition you
wanted.

10
00:00:34,440 –> 00:00:37,960
Pride has a way of disguising
itself, and that makes it one of

11
00:00:37,960 –> 00:00:40,720
the most dangerous things to let
take root in your heart.

12
00:00:41,760 –> 00:00:45,600
Proverbs chapter 16, verse 18
doesn’t leave any room for

13
00:00:45,600 –> 00:00:48,600
ambiguity.
Pride goes before destruction

14
00:00:49,640 –> 00:00:51,480
and a haughty spirit before a
fall.

15
00:00:52,080 –> 00:00:54,560
That’s not a threat.
It’s a warning rooted in the

16
00:00:54,560 –> 00:00:56,640
reality of how life actually
works.

17
00:00:57,720 –> 00:01:00,560
When pride is driving your
decisions, you stop listening

18
00:01:00,560 –> 00:01:03,600
well, you stop seeing your own
blind spots.

19
00:01:04,000 –> 00:01:07,840
You start making choices based
on ego rather than wisdom, and

20
00:01:07,840 –> 00:01:09,600
eventually that catches up with
you.

21
00:01:10,720 –> 00:01:12,720
The higher the pride, the harder
the fall.

22
00:01:13,200 –> 00:01:15,520
We’ve all seen it in others.
And if we’re honest in

23
00:01:15,520 –> 00:01:21,080
ourselves, Psalm 58 verse 6 is a
raw, unfiltered prayer.

24
00:01:21,480 –> 00:01:24,600
The kind where someone is
genuinely disturbed by injustice

25
00:01:24,880 –> 00:01:26,960
and brings that anger straight
to God.

26
00:01:28,080 –> 00:01:29,800
And there’s something important
in that.

27
00:01:29,920 –> 00:01:32,840
When you’re provoked, when
someone wrongs you, when anger

28
00:01:32,840 –> 00:01:34,480
flares up, what do you do with
it?

29
00:01:34,960 –> 00:01:39,040
The psalmist takes it to God.
He doesn’t bottle it up and let

30
00:01:39,040 –> 00:01:42,480
it curdle into bitterness.
He doesn’t explode outward and

31
00:01:42,480 –> 00:01:46,080
damage relationships.
He pours it out to God, who is

32
00:01:46,080 –> 00:01:49,440
the only one truly capable of
handling justice rightly.

33
00:01:50,400 –> 00:01:54,160
That’s a model worth following.
You can be honest with God about

34
00:01:54,160 –> 00:01:56,120
your anger.
You don’t have to pretend it

35
00:01:56,120 –> 00:01:59,240
isn’t there, but give it to him
before it gives you over to

36
00:01:59,240 –> 00:02:03,160
something destructive.
And then Galatians chapter 5

37
00:02:03,160 –> 00:02:06,600
verse 13 reframes what freedom
actually looks like.

38
00:02:07,160 –> 00:02:10,919
For you were called to freedom,
brothers only Do not use your

39
00:02:10,919 –> 00:02:13,880
freedom as an opportunity for
the flesh, but through love

40
00:02:13,880 –> 00:02:17,040
serve one another.
Here’s the thing about freedom.

41
00:02:17,240 –> 00:02:21,160
It can be used two ways.
You can use it to do whatever

42
00:02:21,160 –> 00:02:24,920
you want whenever you want for
yourself, or you can use it to

43
00:02:24,920 –> 00:02:28,400
lift other people.
And the counterintuitive truth

44
00:02:28,400 –> 00:02:31,600
of the gospel is that the second
option is actually the more

45
00:02:31,600 –> 00:02:35,680
powerful and fulfilling. 1 Using
your freedom to serve doesn’t

46
00:02:35,680 –> 00:02:39,680
diminish you, it enlarges you.
It builds something in your

47
00:02:39,680 –> 00:02:43,280
character that no amount of self
gratification ever could.

48
00:02:43,800 –> 00:02:46,200
Think about what this looks like
in your daily life.

49
00:02:47,200 –> 00:02:50,440
Pride says I need to win this.
Humility says I need to

50
00:02:50,440 –> 00:02:53,400
understand this.
Pride says my comfort first.

51
00:02:53,640 –> 00:02:57,080
Love says, what does this person
need right now?

52
00:02:57,520 –> 00:02:59,800
It’s not weakness to choose the
second option.

53
00:03:00,800 –> 00:03:05,440
In fact, Proverbs chapter 16
verse 32, which you’ll encounter

54
00:03:05,440 –> 00:03:08,760
more this week, says that the
person who rules their own

55
00:03:08,760 –> 00:03:11,680
spirit is mightier than someone
who conquers a city.

56
00:03:12,680 –> 00:03:16,760
Self mastery, choosing humility
over ego is one of the most

57
00:03:16,760 –> 00:03:20,360
powerful things a person can do.
You have something to offer the

58
00:03:20,360 –> 00:03:24,240
people around you, your words,
your attention, your

59
00:03:24,240 –> 00:03:26,720
encouragement, your willingness
to show up.

60
00:03:27,200 –> 00:03:30,680
But pride shrinks all of that.
It turns your energy inward and

61
00:03:30,680 –> 00:03:32,520
leaves others without what they
need from you.

62
00:03:33,600 –> 00:03:36,440
Humility, on the other hand,
frees you to be genuinely

63
00:03:36,440 –> 00:03:39,800
useful, to make a real
difference, to reflect the

64
00:03:39,800 –> 00:03:43,440
character of Jesus, who, with
all power and authority, chose

65
00:03:43,440 –> 00:03:46,400
to serve.
That’s the kind of power worth

66
00:03:46,400 –> 00:03:48,040
having.
Let’s pray.

67
00:03:48,560 –> 00:03:51,960
Heavenly Father, thank you for
the freedom I have in Christ and

68
00:03:51,960 –> 00:03:54,920
for the reminder that true
freedom is lived outward, not

69
00:03:54,920 –> 00:03:58,200
inward.
Help me to recognize pride when

70
00:03:58,200 –> 00:04:01,200
it shows up in my heart, even in
its subtle forms.

71
00:04:01,760 –> 00:04:05,040
Teach me to handle anger by
bringing it to You, not letting

72
00:04:05,040 –> 00:04:06,880
it drive me into something I’ll
regret.

73
00:04:07,960 –> 00:04:10,360
And help me to use the freedom
you’ve given me to serve the

74
00:04:10,360 –> 00:04:14,120
people around me with kindness,
patience, and genuine love.

75
00:04:14,640 –> 00:04:17,720
Make me humble.
God in Jesus name, Amen.

76
00:04:20,160 –> 00:04:23,440
What if the battles hitting your
family are not random and your

77
00:04:23,440 –> 00:04:26,400
home can become a place where
darkness loses every right to

78
00:04:26,400 –> 00:04:29,320
stay?

Bible reading plan.
Proverbs chapter 16 Verse 18

95
00:05:32,040 –> 00:05:35,680
World English Bible Pride goes
before destruction and an

96
00:05:35,680 –> 00:05:40,480
arrogant spirit before a fall.
Psalm Chapter 58 World English

97
00:05:40,480 –> 00:05:43,560
Bible Do you indeed speak
righteousness?

98
00:05:43,560 –> 00:05:47,280
Silent ones, do you judge
blamelessly, you sons of men?

99
00:05:47,640 –> 00:05:48,960
No.
In your heart you plot

100
00:05:48,960 –> 00:05:51,280
injustice.
You measure out the violence of

101
00:05:51,280 –> 00:05:54,680
your hands in the earth.
The wicked go astray from the

102
00:05:54,680 –> 00:05:56,440
womb.
They are wayward as soon as they

103
00:05:56,440 –> 00:06:00,800
are born, speaking lies.
Their poison is like the poison

104
00:06:00,800 –> 00:06:04,520
of a snake, like a deaf cobra
that stops its ear, which

105
00:06:04,520 –> 00:06:07,960
doesn’t listen to the voice of
charmers, no matter how skillful

106
00:06:07,960 –> 00:06:11,680
the charmer may be.
Break their teeth, God in their

107
00:06:11,680 –> 00:06:15,080
mouth, Break out the great teeth
of the Young Lions, Yahweh.

108
00:06:15,440 –> 00:06:19,000
Let them vanish like water that
flows away when they draw the

109
00:06:19,000 –> 00:06:21,080
bow.
Let their arrows be made blunt.

110
00:06:22,080 –> 00:06:24,960
Let them be like a snail which
melts and passes away.

111
00:06:25,280 –> 00:06:29,600
Like the stillborn child who has
not seen the sun before.

112
00:06:29,600 –> 00:06:31,600
Your pots can feel the heat of
the thorns.

113
00:06:31,880 –> 00:06:34,400
He will sweep away the green and
the burning alike.

114
00:06:34,920 –> 00:06:37,480
The righteous shall rejoice when
he sees the vengeance.

115
00:06:38,520 –> 00:06:41,440
He shall wash his feet in the
blood of the wicked, so that men

116
00:06:41,440 –> 00:06:44,960
shall say, Most certainly there
is a reward for the righteous.

117
00:06:45,960 –> 00:06:48,400
Most certainly there is a God
who judges the earth.

118
00:06:48,840 –> 00:06:53,600
Galatians, chapter 5.
World English Bible Stand firm,

119
00:06:53,600 –> 00:06:56,520
therefore, in the liberty by
which Christ has made us free,

120
00:06:56,880 –> 00:06:59,480
and don’t be entangled again
with a yoke of bondage.

121
00:07:00,560 –> 00:07:04,080
Behold, I, Paul, tell you that
if you receive circumcision,

122
00:07:04,240 –> 00:07:08,560
Christ will profit you nothing.
Yes, I testify again to every

123
00:07:08,560 –> 00:07:11,840
man who receives circumcision
that he is a debtor to do the

124
00:07:11,840 –> 00:07:15,320
whole law.
You are alienated from Christ,

125
00:07:15,440 –> 00:07:19,080
you who desire to be justified
by the law, you have fallen away

126
00:07:19,080 –> 00:07:21,920
from grace.
For we through the Spirit, by

127
00:07:21,920 –> 00:07:23,880
faith, wait for the hope of
righteousness.

128
00:07:24,880 –> 00:07:28,320
For in Christ Jesus neither
circumcision amounts to anything

129
00:07:28,560 –> 00:07:31,720
nor uncircumcision, but faith
working through love.

130
00:07:32,240 –> 00:07:35,000
You are running well.
Who interfered with you that you

131
00:07:35,000 –> 00:07:38,920
should not obey the truth?
This persuasion is not from him

132
00:07:38,920 –> 00:07:41,720
who calls you.
A little yeast grows through the

133
00:07:41,720 –> 00:07:44,320
whole lump.
I have confidence toward you in

134
00:07:44,320 –> 00:07:48,280
the Lord, that you will think no
other way, but he who troubles

135
00:07:48,280 –> 00:07:50,720
you will bear his judgment,
whoever he is.

136
00:07:51,200 –> 00:07:54,520
But I, brothers, if I still
preach circumcision, why am I

137
00:07:54,520 –> 00:07:57,520
still persecuted?
Then the stumbling block of the

138
00:07:57,520 –> 00:08:01,480
cross has been removed.
I wish that those who disturb

139
00:08:01,480 –> 00:08:05,160
you would cut themselves off for
you Brothers were called for

140
00:08:05,160 –> 00:08:07,480
freedom.
Only don’t use your freedom for

141
00:08:07,480 –> 00:08:10,840
gain to the flesh, but through
love be servants to one another,

142
00:08:11,840 –> 00:08:13,960
for the whole law is fulfilled
in one word.

143
00:08:13,960 –> 00:08:16,720
In this you shall love your
neighbor as yourself.

144
00:08:17,240 –> 00:08:20,400
But if you bite and devour one
another, be careful that you

145
00:08:20,400 –> 00:08:24,800
don’t consume one another.
But I say, walk by the Spirit,

146
00:08:24,920 –> 00:08:28,480
and you won’t fulfill the lust
of the flesh, for the flesh

147
00:08:28,480 –> 00:08:31,840
lusts against the Spirit and the
spirit against the flesh.

148
00:08:32,320 –> 00:08:35,520
And these are contrary to one
another, that you may not do the

149
00:08:35,520 –> 00:08:39,679
things that you desire, but if
you are led by the Spirit, you

150
00:08:39,679 –> 00:08:42,960
are not under the law.
Now the deeds of the flesh are

151
00:08:42,960 –> 00:08:47,320
obvious, which are adultery,
sexual immorality, uncleanness,

152
00:08:47,320 –> 00:08:51,400
lustfulness, idolatry, sorcery,
hatred, strife, jealousies,

153
00:08:51,400 –> 00:08:56,240
outbursts of anger, rivalries,
divisions, heresies, envy,

154
00:08:56,280 –> 00:09:00,520
murders, drunkenness, orgies and
things like these of which I

155
00:09:00,520 –> 00:09:03,920
forewarn you, even as I also
forewarned you, that those who

156
00:09:03,920 –> 00:09:06,760
practice such things will not
inherit God’s Kingdom.

157
00:09:07,800 –> 00:09:11,240
But the fruit of the Spirit is
Lovejoy, peace, patience,

158
00:09:11,240 –> 00:09:14,640
kindness, goodness, faith,
gentleness and self-control.

159
00:09:15,080 –> 00:09:16,840
Against such things there is no
law.

160
00:09:17,920 –> 00:09:20,920
Those who belong to Christ have
crucified the flesh with its

161
00:09:20,920 –> 00:09:24,520
passions and lusts.
If we live by the Spirit, let’s

162
00:09:24,520 –> 00:09:28,560
also walk by the Spirit.
Let’s not become conceited,

163
00:09:28,800 –> 00:09:31,320
provoking one another and
envying one another.

164
00:09:33,360 –> 00:09:36,600
Thanks for joining us on Bible
Chat, where Scripture meets

165
00:09:36,600 –> 00:09:39,840
everyday life.
If today’s devotional encouraged

166
00:09:39,840 –> 00:09:43,480
you, share it with a friend and

167
00:09:43,480 –> 00:09:45,240

Until next time, stay rooted in
truth, anchored in hope and

169
00:09:49,080 –> 00:09:50,600
walking.
Daily with Jesus.
