“It is better to be of a lowly spirit with the poor than to divide the spoil with the proud. Whoever gives thought to the word will discover good, and blessed is he who trusts in the Lord.” — Proverbs 16:19–20 (ESV)

“But you, O Lord, laugh at them; you hold all the nations in derision.” — Psalm 59:8 (ESV)

“So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.” — Galatians 6:10 (ESV)

It’s easy to feel pressured to “keep up” with others—social media likes, popularity, or being first in everything. But Proverbs 16 reminds us that humility and trusting God matter far more than chasing pride or recognition. Life can feel unfair when others hurt or betray us, like David experienced in Psalm 59, but God sees everything and holds the power, even laughing at those who oppose His plans. Galatians 6 calls us to respond not with bitterness, but by doing good to everyone, especially those in our faith community.

True strength isn’t about showing off or winning at all costs—it’s about humility, trusting God, and using every opportunity to bless others. Even small acts of kindness, encouragement, or standing up for what’s right reflect God’s character and make a real difference in the world around us.

THINK ABOUT IT

1. Humility Wins: How can you choose humility over pride this week, even when it feels like others are “ahead” of you (Proverbs 16:19)?

2. Trust God in the Tough Spots: How does remembering that God holds all nations and laughs at the schemes of the wicked (Psalm 59:8) change the way you deal with conflict or betrayal?

3. Do Good Wherever You Can: What is one way you can actively do good for others this week, both in your school, friend group, or church community (Galatians 6:10)?

BOTTOM LINE

Humility, trust in God, and doing good to others build real strength that lasts longer than pride or status.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, thank You for showing me that true strength comes from humility and trusting You. Help me to stay lowly in spirit, do good to others, and remember that You see and hold power over everything around me. Teach me to respond with love and courage, even when life feels unfair. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

00:00:02,440 –> 00:00:05,800
Welcome to Bible Chat, where we
have devotional conversations

2
00:00:06,120 –> 00:00:08,280
rooted in Scripture and relevant
for today.

3
00:00:10,280 –> 00:00:13,000
May 25th The strength and
humility.

4
00:00:13,240 –> 00:00:17,320
We live in a world that is
constantly measuring followers,

5
00:00:17,320 –> 00:00:21,360
grades, achievements, status.
Everything gets ranked and it’s

6
00:00:21,360 –> 00:00:23,960
easy to feel like you need to
keep up or prove yourself.

7
00:00:24,520 –> 00:00:28,680
The pressure is real and it’s
relentless, and sometimes the

8
00:00:28,680 –> 00:00:32,439
response is to push harder, to
compete more aggressively, to

9
00:00:32,439 –> 00:00:34,480
make sure people know what
you’re capable of.

10
00:00:35,560 –> 00:00:40,000
But Proverbs chapter 16, verse
19 offers a perspective that

11
00:00:40,000 –> 00:00:41,960
genuinely challenges that
instinct.

12
00:00:43,000 –> 00:00:44,800
It is better to be of a lowly
spirit.

13
00:00:44,800 –> 00:00:47,160
With the poor than to divide the
spoil with the proud.

14
00:00:47,760 –> 00:00:51,640
In other words, humble and less
beats prideful and plenty.

15
00:00:52,600 –> 00:00:56,200
The company you keep, the spirit
you carry, the posture of your

16
00:00:56,200 –> 00:00:58,880
heart matters more than how
impressive your position looks

17
00:00:58,880 –> 00:01:02,040
on the surface.
That’s a completely different

18
00:01:02,040 –> 00:01:05,560
set of values from what culture
typically promotes, and it takes

19
00:01:05,560 –> 00:01:09,360
real courage to live by it.
Verse 20 adds something

20
00:01:09,360 –> 00:01:11,440
beautiful.
Whoever gives thought to the

21
00:01:11,440 –> 00:01:14,640
Word will discover good and
blessed is he who trusts in the

22
00:01:14,640 –> 00:01:17,160
Lord.
Notice those two things,

23
00:01:17,360 –> 00:01:21,520
Thinking carefully about God’s
Word and trusting in the Lord.

24
00:01:22,600 –> 00:01:26,640
These aren’t passive activities.
They require intentionality.

25
00:01:27,040 –> 00:01:30,280
You have to choose to slow down,
to reflect, to bring your heart

26
00:01:30,280 –> 00:01:33,280
to God rather than just reacting
to everything around you.

27
00:01:34,440 –> 00:01:37,280
And the promise attached to that
kind of life is blessing.

28
00:01:38,320 –> 00:01:42,520
Not necessarily wealth or fame,
but something deeper, goodness

29
00:01:42,520 –> 00:01:45,880
discovered along the way, and
the steady settledness of a life

30
00:01:45,880 –> 00:01:49,880
built on trust.
Psalm 59, verse 8 shifts

31
00:01:49,880 –> 00:01:52,680
perspective in a way that’s
actually quite funny if you sit

32
00:01:52,680 –> 00:01:55,760
with it.
But you, O Lord, laugh at them.

33
00:01:56,840 –> 00:02:00,200
You hold all the nations in
derision, the enemies and

34
00:02:00,200 –> 00:02:02,840
arrogant forces that feel so
threatening to us.

35
00:02:03,840 –> 00:02:07,480
God is not rattled by them.
He holds all the power, and the

36
00:02:07,480 –> 00:02:10,759
schemes of the proud are, from
his vantage point, ultimately

37
00:02:10,759 –> 00:02:13,840
futile.
That doesn’t mean injustice

38
00:02:13,840 –> 00:02:18,520
doesn’t matter or that we should
be dismissive of real pain, but

39
00:02:18,520 –> 00:02:21,440
it does mean that when you’re
facing betrayal, when someone

40
00:02:21,440 –> 00:02:25,240
has wronged you or made your
life harder, God sees it and He

41
00:02:25,240 –> 00:02:28,680
is not powerless.
You don’t have to take matters

42
00:02:28,680 –> 00:02:30,880
into your own hands to make
things right.

43
00:02:31,920 –> 00:02:35,760
Galatians chapter 6, verse 10
then brings us back to the

44
00:02:35,760 –> 00:02:38,480
ground level with beautifully
practical instruction.

45
00:02:39,000 –> 00:02:44,120
So then, as we have opportunity,
let us do good to everyone, and

46
00:02:44,120 –> 00:02:46,600
especially to those who are of
the household of faith.

47
00:02:47,120 –> 00:02:51,360
As we have opportunity, that
phrase is worth pausing on.

48
00:02:51,800 –> 00:02:54,360
Opportunities to do good
surround you every day.

49
00:02:54,640 –> 00:02:57,880
They’re just easy to miss or
dismiss as too small to matter.

50
00:02:58,920 –> 00:03:01,720
The kind word to someone who
looks like they’re struggling.

51
00:03:02,160 –> 00:03:04,920
Defending someone who’s being
talked about unfairly.

52
00:03:05,360 –> 00:03:08,280
Showing up consistently for the
people in your life who need

53
00:03:08,280 –> 00:03:11,040
you.
Serving in your church or youth

54
00:03:11,040 –> 00:03:12,880
group even when it’s not
convenient.

55
00:03:13,320 –> 00:03:17,160
These aren’t glamorous things,
but they are the things that

56
00:03:17,160 –> 00:03:20,440
build genuine strength of
character, the kind that doesn’t

57
00:03:20,440 –> 00:03:23,200
depend on other people’s
recognition or ranking.

58
00:03:23,720 –> 00:03:26,600
The kind that, as Proverbs puts
it, lasts.

59
00:03:27,600 –> 00:03:31,320
True strength isn’t loud.
It’s quiet, consistent, and

60
00:03:31,320 –> 00:03:33,040
rooted in something that doesn’t
shift.

61
00:03:33,360 –> 00:03:35,120
You don’t have to compete for
your value.

62
00:03:35,320 –> 00:03:37,320
You don’t have to prove yourself
to anyone.

63
00:03:38,320 –> 00:03:41,920
God sees you clearly, He values
you deeply, and He’s inviting

64
00:03:41,920 –> 00:03:45,320
you to live from that secure
place humbly, faithfully, and

65
00:03:45,320 –> 00:03:47,040
usefully.
Let’s pray.

66
00:03:48,080 –> 00:03:51,240
Heavenly Father, thank you for
showing me that real strength

67
00:03:51,240 –> 00:03:53,200
doesn’t look like what the world
applauds.

68
00:03:53,720 –> 00:03:57,200
Help me to choose humility over
pride, even when it costs me.

69
00:03:57,200 –> 00:04:00,960
In the moment when I feel the
pressure to compete or prove

70
00:04:00,960 –> 00:04:04,480
myself, remind me that my worth
is already settled in You.

71
00:04:05,640 –> 00:04:08,880
Teach me to trust You in the
unfair moments knowing you see

72
00:04:08,880 –> 00:04:12,480
everything, and help me to use
every opportunity I have today

73
00:04:12,480 –> 00:04:16,360
to do genuine good for the
people around me in Jesus name,

74
00:04:16,480 –> 00:04:19,000
Amen.
What if the battles hitting your

75
00:04:19,000 –> 00:04:22,240
family are not random and your
home can become a place where

76
00:04:22,240 –> 00:04:24,320
darkness loses every right to
stay?

92
00:05:22,440 –> 00:05:24,960
with God in today’s three-year
Bible reading plan.

93
00:05:26,840 –> 00:05:31,560
Proverbs, chapter 16, verses 19
to 20 World English Bible.

94
00:05:32,000 –> 00:05:35,080
It is better to be of a lowly.
Spirit with the poor than to

95
00:05:35,080 –> 00:05:36,720
divide the plunder with the
proud.

96
00:05:37,240 –> 00:05:39,560
He who heeds the Word finds
prosperity.

97
00:05:40,600 –> 00:05:42,600
Whoever trusts in Yahweh is
blessed.

98
00:05:43,000 –> 00:05:47,320
Psalm Chapter 59 World English
Bible Deliver me from my

99
00:05:47,320 –> 00:05:50,080
enemies.
My God set me on high from those

100
00:05:50,080 –> 00:05:53,720
who rise up against me.
Deliver me from the workers of

101
00:05:53,720 –> 00:05:56,000
iniquity.
Save me from the bloodthirsty

102
00:05:56,000 –> 00:05:59,320
men, for behold, they lie in
wait for my soul.

103
00:06:00,400 –> 00:06:03,320
The mighty gather themselves
together against me, not for my

104
00:06:03,320 –> 00:06:07,320
disobedience, nor for my sin.
Yahweh, I have done no wrong,

105
00:06:07,320 –> 00:06:11,120
yet they are ready to attack me.
Rise up, behold, and help me.

106
00:06:12,160 –> 00:06:15,840
You, Yahweh, God of armies, the
God of Israel, rouse yourself to

107
00:06:15,840 –> 00:06:18,800
punish the nation’s.
Show no mercy to the wicked

108
00:06:18,800 –> 00:06:21,520
traitors.
They return at evening howling

109
00:06:21,520 –> 00:06:23,760
like dogs and prowl around the
city.

110
00:06:24,760 –> 00:06:26,240
Behold, they spew with their
mouth.

111
00:06:26,640 –> 00:06:29,520
Swords are in their lips, for
they say, Who hears us?

112
00:06:30,040 –> 00:06:33,440
But you, Yahweh, laugh at them.
You scoff at all the nations.

113
00:06:34,480 –> 00:06:37,840
Oh my strength I watch for you,
for God is my high tower.

114
00:06:38,240 –> 00:06:40,880
My God will go before me with
his loving kindness.

115
00:06:41,280 –> 00:06:43,560
God will let me look at my
enemies in triumph.

116
00:06:43,960 –> 00:06:46,280
Don’t kill them, or my people
may forget.

117
00:06:47,240 –> 00:06:50,120
Scatter them by your power and
bring them down, Lord our

118
00:06:50,120 –> 00:06:52,600
shield.
For the sin of their mouth and

119
00:06:52,600 –> 00:06:54,760
the words of their lips.
Let them be caught in their

120
00:06:54,760 –> 00:06:57,520
pride for the curses and lies
which they utter.

121
00:06:58,520 –> 00:07:01,600
Consume them in wrath.
Consume them and they will be no

122
00:07:01,600 –> 00:07:04,040
more.
Let them know that God rules in

123
00:07:04,040 –> 00:07:07,560
Jacob to the ends of the earth.
At evening let them return.

124
00:07:08,560 –> 00:07:11,200
Let them howl like a dog and go
around the city.

125
00:07:11,600 –> 00:07:14,720
They shall wander up and down
for food and wait all night if

126
00:07:14,720 –> 00:07:17,160
they aren’t satisfied.
But I will sing of your

127
00:07:17,160 –> 00:07:20,200
strength.
Yes, I will sing aloud of your

128
00:07:20,200 –> 00:07:23,680
loving kindness in the morning.
For you have been my high tower,

129
00:07:23,880 –> 00:07:25,960
a refuge in the day of my
distress.

130
00:07:26,400 –> 00:07:30,560
To you my strength I will sing
praises, for God is my high

131
00:07:30,560 –> 00:07:34,760
tower, the God of my mercy.
Galatians Chapter 6 World

132
00:07:34,760 –> 00:07:39,240
English Bible Brothers, even if
a man is caught in some fault,

133
00:07:39,520 –> 00:07:42,640
you who are spiritual must
restore such a one in a spirit

134
00:07:42,640 –> 00:07:46,200
of gentleness, looking to
yourself so that you also aren’t

135
00:07:46,200 –> 00:07:50,840
tempted, bear one another’s
burdens, and so fulfill the law

136
00:07:50,840 –> 00:07:53,640
of Christ.
For if a man thinks himself to

137
00:07:53,640 –> 00:07:56,440
be something when he is nothing,
he deceives himself.

138
00:07:57,560 –> 00:08:00,720
But let each man examine his own
work, and then he will have

139
00:08:00,720 –> 00:08:03,720
reason to boast in himself and
not in someone else.

140
00:08:04,160 –> 00:08:06,240
For each man will bear his own
burden.

141
00:08:07,240 –> 00:08:10,160
But let him who is taught in the
Word share all good things with

142
00:08:10,160 –> 00:08:12,440
him who teaches.
Don’t be deceived.

143
00:08:12,880 –> 00:08:15,800
God is not mocked.
For whatever a man sows that he

144
00:08:15,800 –> 00:08:19,480
will also reap.
For he who sows to his own flesh

145
00:08:19,480 –> 00:08:22,600
will from the flesh reap
corruption, but he who sows to

146
00:08:22,720 –> 00:08:25,560
the Spirit, will from the Spirit
reap eternal life.

147
00:08:26,600 –> 00:08:29,640
Let’s not be weary in doing
good, for we will reap in due

148
00:08:29,640 –> 00:08:34,080
season if we don’t give up.
So then, as we have opportunity,

149
00:08:34,280 –> 00:08:37,880
let’s do what is good toward all
men, and especially toward those

150
00:08:37,880 –> 00:08:39,559
who are of the household of the
faith.

151
00:08:40,120 –> 00:08:43,159
See with what large letters I
write to you with my own hand.

152
00:08:44,280 –> 00:08:47,760
As many as desire to make a good
impression in the flesh compel

153
00:08:47,760 –> 00:08:51,440
you to be circumcised, just so
they may not be persecuted for

154
00:08:51,440 –> 00:08:54,760
the cross of Christ.
For even they who receive

155
00:08:54,760 –> 00:08:58,600
circumcision don’t keep the law
themselves, but they desire to

156
00:08:58,600 –> 00:09:01,680
have you circumcised, that they
may boast in your flesh.

157
00:09:02,760 –> 00:09:06,240
But far be it from me to boast,
except in the cross of our Lord

158
00:09:06,240 –> 00:09:09,840
Jesus Christ, through which the
world has been crucified to me,

159
00:09:10,040 –> 00:09:13,720
and I to the world.
For in Christ Jesus neither is

160
00:09:13,720 –> 00:09:17,000
circumcision anything nor
uncircumcision, but a new

161
00:09:17,000 –> 00:09:20,080
creation.
As many as walk by this rule,

162
00:09:20,200 –> 00:09:23,160
peace and mercy beyond them and
on God’s Israel.

163
00:09:24,200 –> 00:09:27,680
From now on, let no one cause me
any trouble, for I bear the

164
00:09:27,680 –> 00:09:30,160
marks of the Lord Jesus branded
on my body.

165
00:09:30,680 –> 00:09:32,520
The grace of our Lord Jesus
Christ.

166
00:09:32,520 –> 00:09:35,160
Be with your spirit, brothers.
Amen.
